She really stole the whole show with her tsundere attitude and deadly shin-kicks. Plus it’s Nakahara Mai. It’s just a fucking shame the show was pure shit apart from her.

Lesbian of the Year:

Shirai Kuroko (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun)

I admit, I thoroughly enjoy the lesbian antics of Kuroko in Railgun way more than the show’s story itself. Plus the way Satomi Arai voices her with a combination of haughtiness and naughtiness really makes her stand out.

Runner-up: Nishida Haruka (Kanamemo)

Best new series I picked up this year:

Umineko no Naku Koro ni.

The Visual Novel of course. The only good thing that ever came from the anime.

Disappointing Series of the Year:

Asura Cryin’

It had a nice potpourri of awesome elements from mecha to magic and a bunch of hawt speciments of the female gender. Just too bad they decided to hinge the whole story on a contrived plot device and gave it a generic “life goes on” happy ending. Did I mention how QUALITY the production was in the later episodes? Adult Nia is still extremely HAWT though.

Ballsiest Idea for an Eroge this Year:

Osananajimi ha Daitouryou (My Girlfriend is the President)

Your girlfriend is “Omaha” and she rules Japan in her White House. Putina is the President of the USSR. Throw in a loli alien that doesn’t give a fuck about fixing her own mistakes and very moe-moe spaceship and you have a really weird eroge on your hands.

Weirdest Cameo of the Year:

Yaranaika in Kiddy Girl-and

Absolutely unexpected and totally hilarious. I can only hope they really ARE dicking around with the fans for this first half of the show. I don’t think it can be saved otherwise.

Gintama Arc of the Year:

The Popularity Poll arc.

Nothing is sacred in the eyes of Gintama’s production team. I can’t believe they managed to even make a whole arc on the premise of the characters killing each other to improve their ranks. Add that to them killing the original mangaka as well….

In total, 43 shows completed this year. I’m surprised at how much I managed to watch despite thinking about how slow this year was. Then again, I never did keep track of the number of shows I watched for the last few years…..

Finally, after 4 months of waiting, the noble people of Witch-Hunt has delivered! Episode 5 of Umineko just 48 hours before C77 starts was kept to, amazingly!

Before reading, be warned this is a seriously long post (72 screencaps) and it has spoilers, so if you haven’t read the VN yet, be forewarned!

Phew, that was a shorter read than I expected it to be. Episode 5 proved to be a great opening act for the Chiru arc of Umineko, although it introduced a whole number of new concepts and characters (Dlanor is more awesome than I expected), as well as drastically unveiling the true natures of some of them.

For example, while it has been shown Bernkastel is one cold bitch, she really lives to that and more in this arc of Umineko with her ruthless piece of “Erika” and how she generally treats everyone else in the game. Heck, she’s actually making Lambda look harmless in comparison. I wonder how will she top this off in Episode VI.

This Episode also is pretty crucial for explaining a lot about Natsuhi and how dedicated she is towards the Ushiromiya family, and I have to say I felt really sad for her when she was wrongfully accused of the crimes in this iteration. Even worse was when Bern and Erika implied she committed adultery with Kinzo. Man, that was a seriously low blow.

Also, Beato’s gone in the end of the Episode, and it’s now up to Battler to do battle with Erika and explain all the mysteries that have been presented so far. I’m having mixed feelings about that really, but it does make Battler’s transition in to the Endless Sorceror logical.

Well, Episode VI is due out soon. Let’s all pray Witch-Hunt can release it in 4 months again. I’m still seriously impressed they made Episode V in time for C77. Good job!

As for Ange’s death… could’ve pull that off better. I am a bit sad they didn’t put in the burger joke at the Ura Tea Party lol.

Overall, I’d say Umineko anime was pretty much another adaptation failure, but at least it got more people interested in the series! I can bravely say I am one of them.

Ahhh, I can’t wait for Episode V!

You anime-only watchers sure missed out on some really good shit now that this got spoiled. Seriously, the impact of this part when it hits you in the game is utterly devastating. I’ll admit, the anime art is much more fear-inducing though.

Once again, the anime art is probably compensating for the rushed-ness of the story with QUALITY such as this.

Yeah, that was truly a looooooooong read. Episode 4 is so heavy, I no longer doubt that a proper anime adaptation won’t be made of it.

One really does start off this arc with a weird mindset, having been tricked by Beato throughly in the previous episode, I started off swearing not to believe any more of her tricks.

Then Ange and friends really took this arc through a long sidetrip both in to the future and in to the past, revealing details about Maria and Beato’s relationships, Ange’s past, the situation after the Rokkenjima murders and so on, to finally culminate in an important turning point at the end of the VN. But the ???? section really did rub a lot of salt in to that wound. Now I’m really viewing both Lambda and Bern truly as non-human existences, far beyond human understanding.

This episode also had quite a lot of action, with the highlights being George and Jessica squaring off with Gaap and Ronove respectively, and also the hillarious triple counter punch by Krauss. Seriously, LOL.

But in the end, that’s a really big cliffhanger left there at the end of the Tea Party by Beato…. I really can’t wait for End of the Golden Witch to be translated.

This will be an extremely spoilerish post about Umineko Episode 3, Banquet of the Golden Witch. It contains my thoughts about the story, as I proceeded through it, done in a twitter-like style. Anyways it was a really great arc. Really great arc. Don’t read if you don’t want to get spoiled…. though it’s pretty unlikely you will understand my ramblings unless you’ve read through the episode yourself already.
