Ano Natsu de Matteru 12

DAT PONCHOOOOO!!!
Oh man, where do I even start with this episode? First, Remon’s van morphed in to a half-mecha fighter capable of going toe to toe with the rescue boats. Then Rinon taking on one of those by itself again with Rinna. After that, the Inao train station… the second confession… MIB saving the rest of the cast…. Mizuho Onee-chan’s voice playing over the memories of unearthed from within Lake Kizaki. Holy crap, this final episode was pretty eventful.
Still, the best really was how they pulled off the final ending, with Remon revealed to be part of the MIB (yes, the one from the movies!) and then the film showing at the school festival, with Ichika wearing the poncho. I was so fully prepared for a bittersweet ending up through the ending with the MIB and everything… then the final part plays out and I’m like, “Oh damn, that poncho… THAT PONCHOOOO”. Hahaha really nice touch there. Almost similar to Toradora’s ending even, in fact.
Well, it was definitely a very satisfying conclusion to the series. Only gripe I had is that until the end, I really did not feel too much for the relationship between Kaito and Ichika, mainly because it felt… predetermined? Instead on the other hand, the drama surrounding the both of them, i.e Kanna, Mio and Tetsurou, really became the most engaging part of the show for me, next to Remon-senpai.
The MIB twist with Remon at this episode too was pretty awesome, but I admit I’m still conflicted whether it was genius or just massive trolling. For one, it feels rather sudden to be revealed in the final episode, but yet I guess there’s been hints being thrown around during the show. Still, it would’ve been much more awesome if it was teased that Remon = Ichigo in the credits instead of the MIB connection. I’ll say that but I don’t mind getting a visit from Agent R anytime!
Of course, the real troll/tease has had to be with the message from Ichika’s ancestor. I guess we did get Mizuho in the final episode, but it definitely wasn’t in the way I expected it to be! Nevertheless, it does seem to serve to establish that this is a totally different continuity from the original Onegai series since we all know how that turned out. Still, I’m glad we got the shoutout :D
Ah… sure hope to see more Nagai-Kuroda partnership. Bringing back the Onegai series at this juncture might not be possible, but maybe another one with Remon-senpai in it?
