UQ Holder! 01

UQ Holder!

Well… look at who’s back!

UQ Holder!

T_T Evangeline….

UQ Holder!

UQ Holder!

Yeap, one year and a half since the end of Negima!, Akamatsu’s back with UQ Holder! out of the blue. And it looks like Evangeline is taking the centerstage with a new cast to boot! First off, our beloved Eva has changed a little…

UQ Holder!

Well… maybe not quite a little!

UQ Holder!

Rest assured, she’s still as merciless as usual!

UQ Holder!

Our new MC-kun is also hinted to be of the Konoe family… and with Negi as his grandfather?!! Still feels very much like a red herring here.

UQ Holder!

Welp, he’s got memory loss as a character trait too. BTW, one of his friends really resembles Fate…

UQ Holder!

Evangeline hasn’t lost her touch at all. Look closely at she pulls out a freaking ruler from her stockings!

UQ Holder!

Shit hits the fan really fast though….

UQ Holder!

Oh…. ouch. (not that it’ll kill her or anything)

UQ Holder!

Oh man, the mental trauma here… Akamatsu is really not holding back from the start.

UQ Holder!

The… end?

UQ Holder!

I don’t quite think that’s the right time to be calling for human medical services…

UQ Holder!

Time to be a vampire!

UQ Holder!

UQ Holder!

Whoaaaaaaa!!!!!!

UQ Holder!

Time to let the cat out of the bag.

UQ Holder!

T_T Evangeline….

UQ Holder!

D’awwwww Touta-kun…

I left out quite a number of fun bits in the chapter, like Evangeline’s parenting methods and other stuff, but suffice to say I’m pretty goddamn excited about this manga. I mean, it literally starts with Evangeline lamenting her immortality. And then it ramps things up with some really gory violent action too. I guess Akamatsu finally got his way to do whatever he wants from Kodansha with this one. Although it might be hillarious if he switches genre to harem later

As surmised, UQ Holder! isn’t exactly a true sequel of Negima! but it’s a continuation of sorts. There are hints that this is the A-line in the Negima ending where Asuna never came back until 130 years later, but I’m not betting money on that theory. Admittedly, it definitely isn’t the B/Happy End time line, since in that one, Magic was made public knowledge quite earlier and well… Evangeline says she’s 700 now, when she was 600-odd in Negima. So there’s at least 50 or so years gap there.

It’s also great to come back to the Akamatsu-verse. While Negima’s ending left a bitter taste in quite a lot of fans… I always felt it wasn’t really about the story, but the world and characters that Akamatsu created that really stood out the most in Negima. Even starting for the base of near 40 characters and with literally hundred-odd over in the end introduced, it’s amazing that Akamatsu still manages to make most of them stand out. UQ Holder starts off with a relatively smaller base of characters, so I’m looking forward to see Akamatsu’s magic at work.

Another interesting thing to mention is the name of the manga itself, UQ Holder. UQ sounds a heck lot like 「悠久 【ゆうきゅう】」, plus the opening narration and spread hints that there might be more immortal people coming in to the mix. Like I said, pretty exciting for Akamatsu fans… where’s that next chapter already?!

Touta and his friends will be the Ala Rubra version 2, calling it now.

    Well, officially, Chapter 1 isn’t out yet… :p

But I am excited, too. As for the relationship between Negi and Touta… that’s just Wild Mass Guessing. We don’t even know if Negi really is Touta’s grandfather, since jii-chan could just as well be meant affectionately and I bet many fans are speculating again who Negi married or whether his child married into the Konoe family etc.

The story apparently plays in the sixties of the 21st century (Touta’s parents passed away in 2064, two years before the story began, so it must be the year 2066). Around 60 years passed since the beginning of Negima!, which started in 2003.

I am pleased to see Eva again. She was one of my favorites and she probably stays in her adult form, as we can see in the cover. Her character seems to be more soft-hearted and less snarky, but I don’t mind that at all.

    Goddamn you Akamatsu.

“If I’m together with you, living an eternal life doesn’t seem so bad.”

You fucking Japanese dog. I’ve never been so angry in all my life.

Those are pretty much the same words Negi said to Evangeline’s scroll double in 291, when he fully merged with his demonic self.

“That would just mean I’d be the same as you, wouldn’t it, Master? So I guess it might not be so bad! Besides, I really like you!”

You throw another shota in with Evangeline, make him the grandson of Negi, have him save Eva in the first chapter, and have him say the same thing Negi says. You’re just prodding us with an implied ending here for Negima, and waving it in our faces like a disapproving finger, telling us that we’ll never get to see a proper ending to Negima.

And what about Nagi? What about Evangeline’s non-mortal friends, like Chachamaru? What about Evangeline’s “final boss” status, that she kept bringing up in Negima? There are so many plot holes with the new, mellow Eva.

I think this might be the Interquel. If it’s on the A Time-line, where Asuna woke up late and as a result, saw everyone dear to her gone, then this is probably more properly a spinoff focusing on that time-line, and not the good end.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends in Time-line travelling shenanigans, where Touta meets his B side self. And where Eva switches places with a B variant of herself, and sees how long it takes for Touta to realize the difference.

  14. Izaak Said,

It’s back. Kinda. I’m happy to see Eva find a new toy and having lived as a responsible person for a time.

Something about the timeline is definitely whacked out, but it also doesn’t look like the A Timeline… Negi’s A Timeline tombstone was shown with other tombs behind it. UQ Timeline tombstone is overlooking a cliff… Might just be a continuity error or someone moving his grave though…

Not sure if it’s me, but that character silhouette on the right looks ALOT like Albiero Imma…and yes..that friend of Touta is more likely a descendant of Fate.

So Negi’s child married into the Konoe family eh…did the Konoe family ever had a male heir? Or is it just a case of the child opting to use the mother’s surname?

If you look carefully, Chachazero is still around. She’s just inanimate, on a shelf in their house.

  29. edru Said,

    August 28, 2013 @ 2:41 pm

^tbh ive thought of that, though less donated rather than being seduced/persuaded(this is going with the theory he didnt marry).

  30. anon Said,

    August 28, 2013 @ 3:18 pm

The question is, how many students got how many donations.

I suspect everyone but Natsuki(who has Kotaro), Sayo(who’s dead), Evangeline(who’s undead), Chachamaru(who’s a robot), Chao(who’s his granddaughter) and Asuna(who’s his aunt) got some.

  31. edru Said,

    eh probably not that much.

  39. OverMaster Said,

“I will also like to see how the Third Magic Wars starts in the series.”

Yep, it’ll sure be nice seeing how all of Ala Alba’s efforts ultimately will do nothing to prevent the cataclysm that will wreck tragedy upon both worlds and made Chao’s youth implied hell. I’m sure that won’t make them look like their efforts, and the whole of Negima, were wasted or anything.

Honestly, give people some scraps and some Evangeline and they’ll overlook everything.

“So all the girls I loved are dead except Eva and maybe one or two non-humans who haven’t shown up?”

    “Screw this manga.”

    Word. (Brofist).

And screw Akamatsu, too. Funny how people here was so adamant about the end of Oreimo, yet they’re so easy on the end of Negima, which was ten times as worse.

  46. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    September 1, 2013 @ 7:51 am

Negima’s ending was a disappointment at some levels but not entirely terrible. At least we got some real resolution at the end of it.

Oreimo on the other hand was not just terrible, it was also a massive cop-out after YEARS of building the relationship and then telling us right at the end, “oh it’s not gonna happen after all oh wait it might!”

Sure, Negima had so much more promised to us (Nightmare Circus arc never forget) but saying it’s “ten times as worse” as Oreimo… that’s just like, your opinion, man.

  47. OverMaster Said,

    September 1, 2013 @ 11:16 am

“At least we got some real resolution at the end of it.”

Hastily bundled together single panels with asspull infodumps will never be ‘real resolutions’ for anyone’s character arc.

And Negima had even more years of build up for even more and bigger subjects than Oreimo ever treated. All of them wasted in such an embarrassing way. But it’s fine since now we got a sequel where everyone but the creator’s pet is gone, and since we didn’t have enough questions without answers, of course the rational thing is introducing even more questions (seriously, only one chapter and Touta’s past is already a logistics nightmare in waiting) we’ll most likely be cheated on again.

  48. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    September 1, 2013 @ 11:52 am

What did you expect Akamatsu to do then with everyone. Considering the number of characters in Negima, I felt the “infodumps” was the best way he could have went about to close the series with.

Negima wasn’t really your standard “shounen” series at the start, the first 2 volumes are embarrassingly bad and standard almost-harem hijinks (dodgeball stripping anyone?). At that point, no one expected Akamatsu to pull such a crazy retooling of the series, involving EVERYONE in the class in an adventure to not just save one, but TWO worlds.

Even more admirable is probably how he managed to do so much with so many characters, to the point that people like you feel “betrayed” he didn’t do 31 chapters to resolve everyone’s “character arc”.

I’m not saying Negima’s ending was disappointing but your expectations may just be a bit too unrealistic.

  49. OverMaster Said,

    September 1, 2013 @ 10:44 pm

Dude, even core questions integral to the series’ spine itself, like ‘How they freed Nagi and defeat the Lifemaker for good?’, ‘What happened to Negi’s mother?’ and ‘Who did Negi end up with?’ were clumsily swept over. Name me one satisfying action shonen where they never defeat the final enemy on-panel, and one satisfying romantic comedy where they never say who the lead ended up with. And please don’t tell me that can be ‘fixed’ with a few flashbacks in someone else’ story more than fifty years after the back, because that’s just plain sad.

And I’d take the first two volumes over the final two volumes easily, any day.

I disagree on the characters being impossible to wrap up properly. With a few more volumes, it could have been done.

  50. OverMaster Said,

    September 1, 2013 @ 10:46 pm

Sorry, a few typos up there. I meant ‘after the fact’, not ‘after the back’.
