Well… look at who’s back!
Yeap, one year and a half since the end of Negima!, Akamatsu’s back with UQ Holder! out of the blue. And it looks like Evangeline is taking the centerstage with a new cast to boot! First off, our beloved Eva has changed a little…
Well… maybe not quite a little!
Rest assured, she’s still as merciless as usual!
Our new MC-kun is also hinted to be of the Konoe family… and with Negi as his grandfather?!! Still feels very much like a red herring here.
Welp, he’s got memory loss as a character trait too. BTW, one of his friends really resembles Fate…
Evangeline hasn’t lost her touch at all. Look closely at she pulls out a freaking ruler from her stockings!
Shit hits the fan really fast though….
Oh…. ouch. (not that it’ll kill her or anything)
Oh man, the mental trauma here… Akamatsu is really not holding back from the start.
I don’t quite think that’s the right time to be calling for human medical services…
Time to be a vampire!
Time to let the cat out of the bag.
I left out quite a number of fun bits in the chapter, like Evangeline’s parenting methods and other stuff, but suffice to say I’m pretty goddamn excited about this manga. I mean, it literally starts with Evangeline lamenting her immortality. And then it ramps things up with some really gory violent action too. I guess Akamatsu finally got his way to do whatever he wants from Kodansha with this one.
Although it might be hillarious if he switches genre to harem later
As surmised, UQ Holder! isn’t exactly a true sequel of Negima! but it’s a continuation of sorts. There are hints that this is the A-line in the Negima ending where Asuna never came back until 130 years later, but I’m not betting money on that theory. Admittedly, it definitely isn’t the B/Happy End time line, since in that one, Magic was made public knowledge quite earlier and well… Evangeline says she’s 700 now, when she was 600-odd in Negima. So there’s at least 50 or so years gap there.
It’s also great to come back to the Akamatsu-verse. While Negima’s ending left a bitter taste in quite a lot of fans… I always felt it wasn’t really about the story, but the world and characters that Akamatsu created that really stood out the most in Negima. Even starting for the base of near 40 characters and with literally hundred-odd over in the end introduced, it’s amazing that Akamatsu still manages to make most of them stand out. UQ Holder starts off with a relatively smaller base of characters, so I’m looking forward to see Akamatsu’s magic at work.
Another interesting thing to mention is the name of the manga itself, UQ Holder. UQ sounds a heck lot like 「悠久 【ゆうきゅう】」, plus the opening narration and spread hints that there might be more immortal people coming in to the mix. Like I said, pretty exciting for Akamatsu fans… where’s that next chapter already?!
