The MC’s just can’t win in Urobuchi-verse. So what’s worse, being born in an utilitarian, militaristic dystopia dedicated to wiping out “aliens” or being turned in to squids? Poor Ledo should’ve just took up on those reproductive rights he earned….

That being said…this reveal was pretty much on the cards for a long time coming now, but wow the entire exposition of humans evolving to the “Hideauze” really did bring out the shivers in me. I’ll give them that. Wonder what it feels like, being turned in to a space squid.

I’m sure there’s a fuck ton of holes to be poked at by other people for this reveal, but as for me, I just can’t help but to shrug and go “did you really have to go that high-handed, Urobuchi?!”

Butchers’ gotta butch I suppose. And we’re almost there too for the bingo card.

    @Giorno Giovanna
I didn’t get the sense that the Evolvers had a stance against humanity. They seemed to believe that their research was necessary for humanity to survive the 5th Ice Age, and that the opposition was holding them back, but it was the Continental Union that fired the first shot. It didn’t seem like they became aggressive until the war began.

@Kurogane assuming by “nestling matriarch” you mean the thing with the little egg-looking things, is it fair to assume people also come from within? Because it seems like a big stretch to reproduce humans that way.

Tho it does explain the fact if the hideauze behave like squid rather than people.

  13. ReddyRedWolf Said,

The Evolvers already created a method to survive the Ice Age with adaptation to space. Except their way shuns all technology and are slow in space travel. They went Luddite for biotech.

The Continental Alliance creates a wormhole drive so people can leave Earth faster with a better chance to find a new homeworld.

What did the Evolvers do? Lets steal their shit and leave behind the inferior humans and we Transhumanist alone will rule the cosmos!

That sort of behavior still continues as the vector of Hideauze expansion is the Galactic Human Alliance expansion via wormholes.

The Hideauze are no longer Human Transhumanists but parasites chasing their prey. The symbiont has taken over their psychology and are no longer human intellect in anyway.

The Galactic Alliance has it also bad. Their over reliance to Artificial Intelligence has resulted to the A.I. discovering the Zeroth Law. The machines like Chamber think they know what is best for humanity.

There’s a huge difference between the Evolvers and their Hideaurze descendents. There’s no evidence that the Evolvers were anti-human until they were attacked first. Reacting with extreme violence and a desire to prove the other side wrong is a very understandable and even human reaction. And even then, the Earthian Hideaurze seem to be descended from a more peaceful subset, implying that the Evolvers themselves had different factions. Labeling them all as having a “stance against humanity” is incorrect.

  17. Septin Said,

    June 3, 2013 @ 11:24 pm

The science citadel was created so they could study in freedom. It was where the Evolvers came to be. When the news was leaked the continental alliance (which would become the galactic alliance) sent a force to attack them without any response. The continental alliance fired first in the war if there was one. Also you dont know that the Hideauze are transhumanists whose symbiot has taken over thier psychology rendering them to simple beasts without any human intellect. We only know thier origin but not enough about thier life to make a solid decision on what the Hideauze really are. Your just making false claims at the moment.

I was trying to think where I noted that similar “YAMERO!” theme where Ledo was trying to stop Chamber and it suddenly popped in: The Saber look where she is commanded to destroy the Holy Grail. Does that count as something in bingo? :P

You’re writing fanfiction now. If you’re going to speculate, at least say so.

First, it was the Alliance that wanted to leave Evolvers behind and their taking-over-the-galaxy radicalism was in response.

Second, we don’t know anything about Hideauze’s thought process. If they believe themselves to be superior, there’s absolutely no reason for them, as humans, not to seek to eliminate the Alliance. After all, eliminating “inferior” people to make more living space for yourself is hardly a novelty in human history.

Third, there was no indication of AIs doing anything outside of their roles. Chamber even refers to himself as an “intelligent interface” rather than an outright AI. It’s perfectly plausible that Alliance itself intentionally forged/obscured/redacted information to justify their war and maintain social order. Again, historical revisionism is hardly a novelty.

Basically, both the Alliance and Hideauze are acting more human than we give them credit for.

  23. MacrossFan Said,

It’s probably best to not call the whalesquid Hideauze of any kind after this reveal. The Hideauze are the combination of the whalesquid symbionts and a human however that is accomplished. What we have on Earth are just genetically engineered shells that are acting on pure animal instinct and wouldn’t develop into the Hideauze that Ledo feared unless, well, some humans on Earth decide to merge with them.

Which brings up a weird possibility…what if that whalesquid/human hybrid that Chamber kills (why, Chamber, why?!) was some kind of calming factor in the whalesquid that without causes the remaining ones to go berserk and threaten the human fleets? Amy (who bares a striking resemblance to the girl in the video) volunteers to take its place using the data Chamber acquires. Ledo in his guilt and grief volunteers to forever stay at the facility and protect if from anyone wanting its technology and repeating history. No happy ending.

“First, it was the Alliance that wanted to leave Evolvers behind and their taking-over-the-galaxy radicalism was in response.”

The Evolvers weren’t left to die. They can survive space itself and outlast the ice age.

Here is the rub they were so focused in evolving themselves for space survival they abandoned all other sciences.

The Continental Union found a better survival strategy by creating colony ships and FTL so they can find a new homeworld. They can still maintain their humanity.

That makes the Evolvers and their leaders look absolutely stupid in comparison.
    Their response?
All of space is ours and we are entitled to that technology even if we did not develop it.

The Continetal Union was leaving the war but Evolvers can’t have that because they have something to prove.

Your post is self-contradictory bullshit. The CU had “better survival strategy,” even though survival strategy is exactly what the Evolvers were developing? The Galactic Alliance had been wandering around on their colony ships for centuries, unable to find a new homeworld, while the Hideauze have no problem adapting to whatever shitty planet they find through their bioengineered forms. Very first episode, we see them living happily around a gas planet too close to its star. They’re doing much better at surviving than the GA.
“Abandoned all other sciences?” Considering what they’re shown to be capable of, they don’t need anything else. Once again, very first episode we see that the Hideauze have the organic equivalents of ships and weapons, more than a match for the technology of the GA. They’ve reached the point where they’ve incorporated all the capabilities they could want into their bodies.
Argue whatever you want about whether they’re still human or not, but by no means are the Hideauze the inferior dependent parasitic species you’re obsessed with thinking they are.

  27. MacrossFan Said,

    June 4, 2013 @ 12:57 pm

War has a way of making villains out of both sides. The Continental Union started the war, yes, but the Evolvers probably became very determined to end it on their terms. As a war drags on as this one has going onto the Galactic Alliance and Hideauze there is little left of what is right anymore.

We first have the Continental Union making a surprise attack on the Evolver site with the Evolvers responding in kind by damaging the CU’s space elevator. The war eventually shifts into orbit. With Earth’s climate worsening the CU probably needed to find a new home and attempted a retreat via their wormhole drive but the Evolvers wanted it to spread their influence throughout the galaxies. A battle probably occurred with both sides going through the wormhole together and them continuing their war to this date. As to current atrocities, we only know with the first few scenes of the GA losing a habitat and plotting a large operation to destroy the Hideauze main nest that ultimately fails.

  28. ReddyRedWolf Said,

    June 4, 2013 @ 1:36 pm

Then why steal the wormhole gate at all? The Evolvers don’t need it.

The reason for this whole war is that both the Hideauze and Alliance can’t leave each other alone.

For the Hideauze their only way to travel FTL is taking the wormhole routes from the Galactic Alliance. The Galactic Alliance has dedicated their very existence of the Hideauze’s destruction.

Motivation side of the answer: As I’ve said before, taking revenge is a very human thing to do. Who wouldn’t want to show up the people who ridiculed and waged war upon them?
Technical side of the answer: the CU might have developed the first gate, but there’s no evidence that the Hideauze have not developed their own FTL in the long period of time since. If the gates are the only way to FTL, then by building and controlling the wormholes the GA dictates when and where they engage the Hideauze, i.e. the war is occurring on the GA’s terms, and they have the ability to stop seeking them out. If the battles between the two forces are to be constant, then the Hideauze must have developed their own FTL so that they can seek the GA out.

  31. Aza Said,

    June 4, 2013 @ 10:55 pm

The Evolvers’ motivation about spreading to the entire galaxy is not problematic. It’s very similar to what Europeans did during the colonization period. I mean, the similarity with Manifest Destiny is uncanny.
Besides, humans naturally multiply, and Earth was already getting inhospitable. If Evolvers didn’t spread out, they’d soon reach a population maximum inside the Solar System, while GA would have had the entire galaxy to live in.

The problem is that Evolvers are colonizing the galaxy by completely annihilating a competing power, which is very inhuman. I could somewhat understand if they gave captured GA citizens a choice of “become Hideauze yourself of perish”, but the fact that both sides are indiscriminately killing each other without any form of diplomacy is very unsettling.

Hideauze must have developed some kind of FTL, or at least learned how to replicate GA’s warp gates. Otherwise, GA could simply shut down and destroy all the warp gates, stranding Hideauze, and then rebuild it piece by piece while avoiding systems settled by Hideauze.

Watching the pointless opinion trolling degenerate is fun. Both of sides lack of respect of the principles of the other is exactly how it ended up as:

    Continental Union / Galactice Alliance

    Evolvers / Hideauze

It is also good to see that the failed form of governance called demockery has ceased to exist. Now we have National Socialism VS Biotech Fundamentalism. The GA has exactly the same social structure as in Starship Troopers.

PS. Someone said that Ledo speaks Deutsch. I find it ironic how things add up.

So the Evolvers devolved into Hideauze? We didn’t get a long enough look at the space Hideauze to form an opinion, but the Hideauze on Earth appear very primal and animal-instinct-like. I haven’t seen anything to suggest that the Earth Hideauze are anything besides like any other sea creature, definitely nothing to suggest any civilization/higher level of intellect..
