HNNNGHHHH DEM IMOUTO CHEEKS!
Hahaha, Tamako’s reaction face here is just so perfect.
Tamako with her hair down is pretty dang hawt.
Megane Tamako too? Aww shit, KyoAni! You shouldn’t have!
Pretty strong first episode by Kyoto Animation for Tamako Market. Leaving production quality aside, KyoAni has really charmed me well with Tamako.
Striking a very good balance between cute, hapless and tsukkomi, Tamako really stands out right from the start. There’s this genuine feel to her character that really triggers the moe, unlike the way KyoAni took with Yui(airhead), Chitanda(clueless) and Rikka(chuunibyou) by overly emphasizing a certain aspect of those girls as their “cuteness”.
In contrast, Tamako is a much more balanced character, being reliable (helping out at the mochi shop), sisterly (towards An), likeable (look at how everyone just loves her!) yet still a little clumsy at times (dem baton twirls). I guess without the constraints of an original source, KyoAni has really got a free reign to take from their experiences over the past few years to give us the ultimate “good girl”. Props as well to newcomer seiyuu Aya Suzuki for the really great and nuanced performance as Tamako too. Let’s hope this keeps up though, I don’t want another Chu2koi ending :P.
Standing in opposition with Tamako meanwhile is the bird. The bird truly was quite the dark horse. When I got to knew about it at first, I was wondering wtf was KyoAni thinking but now that the first episode’s out, I can see that its quite a stroke of genius. By putting in the extremely absurd element of a talking bird, Tamako Market isn’t quite shoe-horned in as a slice-of-life show. Plus by introducing the “prince” plot device, it allows them room later to guide the show towards a proper closure. Having Kayneth’s seiyuu voice the damn bird was an amazing choice too. Just the right amount of arrogance without being overbearing.
One thing that suffers a little for this first episode is the supporting cast not having enough time to assert their presences, but it’s not a big deal considering the size of it. I already can’t wait for the next episode and it even seems like it’ll be jumping two months straight to February if the episode title isn’t misleading.
