Negima! 354

Negima!

Oh man, another time jump, not to mention new characters too… Akamatsu, seriously.

Well, I expected this anyways.

Negima!

Negima!

Yue is seriously channelling a certain puppetmaster-cum-magical-detective isn’t she?

Negima!

“Bounded fields”? Oooooooo…

Negima!

That’s you isn’t it Paio.

Negima!

Whoa delayed Dios Tukos? Yue has certainly levelled up.

Negima!

キタ━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━ !!!!! Magical Detective Ayase Yue!! And even more delayed spells. That’s pretty amazing.

Negima!

Negi’s trademark finisher!

Negima!

Uh-oh….. RAKANNNNNN!!!!

Negima!

Oh fuck, Akamatsu. This is stretching the limits quite a bit isn’t it?! Nooooooo Yueeeeeee!!!

Negima!

Oh, saved in the nick of time by a mysterious fella. Poor Yue almost got ruined for marriage…. :(

Well, that certainly was an interesting chapter. Judging from the battle skills and choice of profession looks like Yue finished off her course in Ariadne… but unfortunately couldn’t get in to a brainiac job lololol. The irony eh.

Still, Akamatsu really seems to be modelling her after a certain someone… I didn’t know he was such a big fan of it www.

Yue’s fighting style is pretty interesting too. I stupidly mistook it as an application of Magia Erebea, but it seems it’s more like a combination of using potions to store delayed spells and then drinking the potion for her to use it. Very efficient given the time saved to chant the arias for the higher-level moves that she used. I’m not surprised if it was inspired by Magia Erebea though… even the spell choices reflect it heh.

So… the last chapter finally and Akamatsu still manages to give us a nice cliffhanger. Pretty sure that’s Negi… or is it? I’m quite okay with the time skip as it makes for a more logical sense for Negi to finally confess. I mean, 17 year old Negi is going to be pretty hawt isn’t he? Honestly who would take a ten year old’s confessions seriously… :)

Well, we’ll see next week on who is the mysterious savior is. And hopefully a good chapter to bow the series out.

Of all the ways to make a penultimate chapter they just had to include that molester, do they….

So… is Yue the end girl? ‘Cuz I really didn’t see that one coming.

This chapter was such a troll chapter. *shakes fist*

If it’s indeed Yue, I will be the happiest reader of Negima around. Probably. Though I doubt that is the case.

And my general opinion of the chapter – loved it. Negima needed more of such stuff. I still wish Akamatsu had shown what other girls were up to in the Magical world after getting separated. Yue’s chapters from there are amongst my favorites.

No this isn’t Fairy Tail or Seikamatsu Occult Gakuen kind of seven years or twelve years time skip arc.

Imagine the cougar character that would likely win Negi’s overall heart is Makie (Horie Yui). I wouldn’t expect him to go for a harem end.

RIP Negima, killed by Akamatsu’s recent incompetence.

The chapter would have been good as a filler to start an actual timeskip arc, but as the penultimate chapter to a saga, it was horribly awful.

While I am kind of pissed off that Negima (or this installment of it, at least!) is ending so soon, I will admit I largely enjoyed this chapter.

While trying to subside my groans of frustration, yes, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Besides, I don’t think Akamatsu is just going to leave us hanging like this. Let Sensei have a well deserved vacation for a while, and then maybe he’ll pick Negima up again with Magical Detective Yue, the rest of former 3-A and some new characters.

Or, dare I hope, he’ll actually make a prequel detailing the adventures of Ala Rubra as a pure shounen manga. A man can dream.
Nevertheless, we still have a chapter left so let’s see what kind of “See You Later!” chapter Akamatsu-sensei can crop up for us.

I remember fondly enough all the wonderful moments I had with this manga to believe in him. So man up Akamatsu, I have expectations!

P.S: Somehow, Yue was kind of reminding me of Patchouli with the hairstyle and the “what-a-pain” look she was giving those two when they walked in her office.
I couldn’t figure out who you thought she was channeling though – care to enlighten me?

Part of me is thinking that person standing there at the end isn’t Negi… but it may be… in any case I really wanted to see more of the other girl’s accomplishments… but that might take it’s own chapter…

If Yue is the girl… wouldn’t be surprised, and it wouldn’t be bad either, at the same I’m sort of hoping the girl isn’t revealed so we can write endless stories at fanfiction.net

I’m fairly certain that anyone of remote renown in the world of anime/manga has been touched by Type Moon. Akamatsu with his start in doujinshi should especially be well versed in the greatest doujin-to-pro story in the industry…

  15. Random_Passerby_Number_612 Said,

    March 7, 2012 @ 7:47 am

@S_1: So what if she is? If you’re referring to Asuna’s surprised reaction, she didn’t know about Yue’s feelings for Negi, nor about her confession. If you’re talking about the general love list that Chamo had, or even generally “known to be in love with Negi”, then that argument is just weird. Why wouldn’t Negi pick a girl who likes him?

@Baka: Trading a half-decent ending for the possibility of seeing tons of half-baked Fix Fics in FF.Net is A HORRIBLY BAD SWITCH.

We’ll see several writers hooking Negi up with their favorites who didn’t win anyway, so there’s no need to sacrifice the actual end.

    @OverMaster

Obviously was joking there sir/maam, FF will have about a few hundred different alternate endings, maybe a moderately small number of them being decent or better, and a much smaller number being excellent, approximately 2 weeks or less after this last chapter comes out.

I do want a solid ending though, what actually bugs me about it is so many questions are potentially going to be left unanswered. I had mentioned Nagi being the Mage of the Beginning, that’s one that bugs me… pretty sure Akamatsu-san was just trolling us there with a plot that went nowhere and only served to leave us wanting more. But, in a weird way, not knowing how Negi, if he ever did, confront and deal with his father… kind of leaves it to our imagination. That’s NOT always the best way to do things, but it’s not a terrible way either, sometimes.

There is a small list of things I was explanations for aside from Nagi, some of them I know that won’t be explained such as Negi’s immortality being affected in some way by Asuna’s actions. The bottom line comes down to what I think many of us will agree on, that is that I don’t want to the series to end lol… but all good things must come to end in this life, unfortunately. I felt the same way about Fullmetal Alchemist, just like that, Negima will go down in my memory as a great manga that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and at the time didn’t want to acknowledge, let along even think about, the fact that the series would eventually come to an end.

So where were we? NegiXYue right? I was rooting for Honya at the beginning, and it’s changed and molded several times over, but Yue and Negi do actually make a good match, despite what the fandom in me wants.

One more chapter… we will see… or we won’t see :D

  23. Thesadpanda Said,

Yue was always Akamatsu-sensei’s favorite (I remember reading that somewhere) so she always got some of the best spots (Becoming a knight , getting her own OAV , the fact she’s a pretty boss magi in her own right) so it makes sense. I’ve loved Yue since the library expedition waaaay back , so i’m getting excited if Yue is actually the choice. He could also be trolling. Wouldn’t surprise me.

  24. Fluffy Said,

Well, I’m guessing Negi will be the savior that rescues the naked Yue since he is the main character. I would like to see how some of the other girls are doing in the last two chapters since they have graduated. Akamatsu created a ton of characters so it may not be possible to squish them all in two chapters. Yue may or may not end up with Negi. She seemed like she was smiling a sad smile when the girl asked if her love for Negi was one sided. She may have gotten turned down by him.

I would like to see a prequel to Negima to see some things explained. Some of my questions are, “How did Negi’s mom die?” ” It could have been at childbirth but never has been directly addressed. “How did Ako get her scar?” “Why was the Ala Rubra group having to guard Asuna?” “Why didn’t Asuna age until after her memories were erased?” “Why did Mana decided to go to an all girl’s school and pose as a human?” “Who died in Mana’s past that was close to her?” The list could go on and on.

  25. Horun Said,

    March 8, 2012 @ 5:07 am

The timeskip actually makes sense to me since at the ch. 353 the majority of the girls were still 14-15 years old while their birthdays are in the 1988-1989 range. So by skipping 7 years in to the future in the story, they’re technically in the present for the real life timeline.

Sadly, endings are always difficult for most writers of long series like this one. I really wish that Akamatsu only end it to start a spinoff where Negi won´t be the main character anymore, because the new set up sounds really interesting, but well…

I wasn´t a big fan of the ending of Love Hina and A.I. love you and I don´t expect that Negima will end better, but if at least we learn who Negi has chosen as his (main?) girlfriend I´m happy.

Also: Hurray for Yue as Touko-expy! I hope we see a grown up Nodoka in the next chapter, too.

  27. FlameStrike Said,

    March 8, 2012 @ 7:09 am

Lesbo multi-armed groper sure is fearsome. It’s a good thing a mysterious mage (Negi?) saved the day though, otherwise the manga would be unfit for a Shonen magazine. XD

While this chapter was good as a filler and alone, I don’t think it was the best idea to put it as the penultimate chapter.

    @DocAstaroth
Personally I thought the Love Hina ending was great. The whole of Love Hina was pretty much one huge Naru x Keitaro ride, so seeing the two finally tie the knot was very satisfying for me.

Haha the first thing I thought when I saw Yue was “Omg Touko” too.

  28. Baka Said,

    March 8, 2012 @ 7:32 am

Love Hina was a truly great series, I liked how you kind of knew at a certain point they would end up together but still had all the plot devices to throw everything off now and then (not to mention Urameshi’s insatiable perversion that was always funny and then turned into a cool, talented, smart, likeable guy).

Anyways, getting off track, Yue and Negi would work… I had some other girls in mind here and there at different points in the series, but looking back now it really does seem solid for the two of them to get together. I am actually hoping now that it will happen, but despite how rushed this ending was forced down our throats, I think Akamatsu-san has enough style to not end the last chapter with revealing the chosen girl while possibly simultaneously giving some of the other characters a decent cameo and line or two. So he may just do one or the other, but I don’t think he will attempt to make both actually good.

Then again he TOTALLY rushed Akira’s pactio acquisition, explanation, and flawless execution. To quote one of my favorite memes, “one does not simply make a pactio contract and instantly know how to use it and happen to be in the perfect place to get out of a tight spot”. That’s my take on it, it felt so rushed, at that point I grew suspicious Akamatsu-san was drawing it to a fast close, seems I was right, sadly :(

    >”Urameshi”
    >Means “Curse you!” in Japanese

I saw what you did there…..

Also I really don’t buy that Yue’s the chosen girl. She doesn’t look like one whose love has been fulfilled. Besides, I feel it would be boring if Yue won, she’s got this hard-boiled detective thing going on quite right for her…

In fact, I think I would support the inconclusive ending right now… I’m not sure Akamatsu would be able to resolve it satisfactory with just a 19-page chapter. There’s still five chapters worth of pages in the last tankoubon that’s going to be empty…

  30. Baka Said,

    March 8, 2012 @ 12:57 pm

That was how I initially felt about it, the chosen girl not being revealed, since it’s supported by a few things people say (namely Asuna, after being cornered and questioned, saying the future is wide open to possibilities) and also taking into account that Akamatsu-san, I’m entirely positive, is fully aware of all the different girls the fans want Negi to choose. I’m not saying he’s a push over who will just please the fans, but there’s that I think as the series went on he found it increasingly difficult to decide on a girl for Negi (that is of course if he actually was open to possibilities before even getting started on the series and didn’t have this roughly planned out already from the beginning).

Despite it all though… I do *kind of* hope he ends up with someone definitive, but as you stated, revealing the girl and ending the series in the same final chapter… that seems way too sloppy even if Akamatsu-san just out right didn’t care anymore.

Can’t wait for next week :D

Calling it now: WMG: Ken-sensei’s new manga will focus on a character similar to Yue, and will focus on light yuri and more action.

Also I don’t get who is Ken-sensei’s model for Yue. I had this Marisa vibes when Yue was wearing the hat.

Touko, Marisa, Patchouli, any-mahou.shoujo-girl, etc. Choose whatever you want, she resembles many characters from different animes.

Yue was always one of my favorite characters(and since a few chapters and the OVA were dedicated to her, I think she was Akamatsu’s favorite, too), however, I agree that her being Negi’s girl is unlikely.

In fact, I think the question will be left unanswered. I mean, Negi is god-fucking 17, maybe 18 years old. Just because he had a girl he liked when he was mentally 12 or 13, it doesn’t automatically mean he will marry her (besides the fact that many fans will be outraged and disappointed if Ken reveals Negi’s future partner in the last chapter, I can’t help but think that things just feel too rushed).

Chisame is eh… how do I put this… perhaps a bit of a female dog at her worst and… yeah just about the same at her best, minus some touching inspirational moments to move along plot devices… I would be pissed if she got with Negi, thankfully for my own sanity I don’t consider it a legitimate possibility.
