Negima! Anime Final

Negima Anime Final

Short version: It’s masturbatory, pisses all over the canon and horribly animated. Do not buy (unless it’s for the Pactio cards). Do not even download this.

Long version: (no seriously it’s long)

Wow, I wasn’t expecting much from the movie, but this production literally defines why I will never have a real Negima anime.

Billed as an alternate ending B to the manga, I’m surprised that Akamatsu would actually even dare to attach his name to this piece of shit. Basically skipping over the entire Magia Erebea arc, class 3-A is about to graduate only to be greeted with a surprise that Negi has ONE day to decide his permanent partner because the Pactios are “going to expire”. Also when the Pactio’s expire, everyone’s memories except the permanent partner will be wiped in order to preserve the secrecy of the Mundus Magicus. At this point, you can probably feel the facepalm emanating from my soul.

Negima Anime Final

Also someone forgot to CC SHAFT about Negima not being a mahou shoujo anime

Obviously it’s a long slippery slope downwards as the girls decide to try and get Negi to choose them and we are treated to about 30-40 minutes of banality interspersed by some admittedly decent fight scenes as the girls abuse the fuck out of their Pactios to chase Negi down.

Negima Anime Final

Yes, Negi actually used Mega Dunamene on Kaede

Suddenly, a plot twist literally appears in the air, out of nowhere, which turns out to be Mars apparently heading towards Earth. At this point we are treated the to B-plan Negi was going for in order to save Mundus Magicus; by taking thirty years to unravel the planet-scale magical barriers surrounding Mars and then ABSORBING it in to Earth. I shit you not. ABSORBING MARS IN TO EARTH.

Negima Anime Final

That is apparently Mars.

But apparently some sort of orbital alignment went crazy and undetected, so suddenly Mars is crashing towards Earth.

Now, Negi’s last hope is to finally choose a permanent partner and become a Magister Magi in the hope that the sudden burst of power created during the ceremony will be able to deflect Mars away.

Eventually Negi declares he will choose his entire class as his permanent partners and he will try to perform his absorption plan NOW instead of taking the 30 years needed. Cue giant Pactio magic circle scene which floats everyone in to the air and they all combine their powers (at least the attack-type Artifact owners) and blow away the barriers. But oops, Mars is still crash-landing towards Earth and all hope seems lost till… Chao appears.

Negima Anime Final

Chao hijack?

(at this point I am like oh god are they going to do the time travel shit again?)

The miraculous appearance of Chao is explained due to Negi perma-Pactio’ing with the entire class and now with all 31 students in place, Negi finally attempts to start his thing (with Pactio’ed Eva supporting him) and he manages to shoot his absorption spell. Earth absorbs Mars, Mundus Magicus now coexists within Earth and it’s a happy ending as the girls graduate and move on to high school, with Negi as their homeroom teacher again, of course.

Negima Anime Final

… and they lived happily ever after, rotating once a month.

At this point, assuming you’ve managed to read through the entire thing and basically qualify as a die hard fan of the series, how many of you managed to NOT facepalm a single time reading through that. Or even retain your sanity and patience at this point.

Negima Anime Final

Have some Chiu-tan as your reward.

Seriously, even I could write fanfics better than this movie. It basically disrespects canon… nay shits and pisses all over it. For example, freaking CHACHAMARU is worried about losing all her memories of the Magical World when: (a). she’s a robot. (b). SHE’S FREAKING CONTRACTED TO EVANGELINE AND IS HER SUPPORT PARTNER. WHY THE FUCK WOULD HER MEMORIES BE WIPED?

In fact the damn memory wipe thing was pretty fucking stupid as fuck because nearly half the freaking class are heroes over there and one of them is the Princess of the Magical World. Hell, some of them are practically inhabitants there, and why would they need to be wiped at all? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..

Of course next is the fucking shitty plot twist that implied being a Magister Magi would make Negi have enough power to PUSH A FREAKING PLANET AWAY. Are they implying the Magister Magi system suddenly makes a mage possess more power than having Magia Erebea? WASN’T MAGISTER MAGI JUST A FREAKING TITLE IN THE FIRST PLACE? Besides, the ones getting Pactio’ed are the ones who get powered over, not the contractor. My rage levels went over 9000% right here.

Negima Anime Final

Approximate representation of my rage.

I’m not even to going to start talking about the Negi Plan B because that is the single most stupid thing the entire span of the Negima anime adaptations have served up. It’s horrible because not only it’s perverting the laws of physics, it’s also beating, pissing on, torturing and waterboarding the canon.

Sigh, and I can’t even recommend it for animation quality because it’s SHAFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!! and it’s in DVD-freaking quality. Why can’t they make it in HD anyways? The entire anime industry has moved on to that. If this was still 2008, it would be forgiven, but it’s 2012 for god’s sake. I don’t think there’s a single SD-airing only anime right now. Hell, why can I watch crap like Brave 10 with better clarity than this feature length (76 mins) movie? Sigh.

Negima Anime Final

Also seriously, Negima is not mahou shoujo…

Negima Anime Final

… no matter how it seems like one

On the flipside, buying the Vol. 37 LE does net you with the entire set of Pactio cards for 3-A.

Negima Anime Final

Which are quite good quality and makes the 4.4k yen for it almost worth it. Only gripe I have is that their choice of replacing the normal background with bling color and I really would have loved the original pale yellow background instead. Still, the Pactio cards here are proper reproductions of the manga versions. It makes me feel like I’ve unlocked an achievement just owning them ahaha.

Well, don’t expect much from the movie, if you decide to watch it. Especially if you’ve been regularly following the manga since.. forever lol. I will never see a proper animation adaptation for Negima, am I? 。・゚(ノД`)゚・。

Wow, it’s like SHAFT sucks or something, who could have possibly seen that coming?

It can’t be less entertaining than the Hayate feature; it’s got that going for it.

Hey, what did you expect from Shaft when they took the series with all the content they had and made into one of their random one colored screen with one word written all over it anime?

The best animation when Shaft handled it was in the OP animation.

Spinoffs left and right and ending it the way they did simply sucked. The only thing they did half right was the special episodes when they went to the beach.

And yes, when Negi fought Eva inside her scroll learning the “dark arts”.

So thanks for sharing Kurogane. I´ll try to refrain myself from downloading this. But I didn´t really expect anything else from Shaft the way they handled the series.

Incidentally, although the OAD version of this movie is a pack-in DVD (as with all the other OADs), it was animated in HD, and will apparently be released on Blu-Ray “eventually”. Granted that doesn’t really help because that means fans have to buy it again, and even worse if they didn’t enjoy the movie in the first place…

  8. lion_of_genesis Said,

… I liked it. I knew it was gonna be shit, but I still liked it a lot. I liked the closure it brought.

I’m not surprised. Sadly. Negima shall become one of my greatest traumas and I will sit in a darkened place rocking back and forth muttering darkly something like “the bastards killed Negima.”

    Nice pactio cards tho.

    >> It can’t be less entertaining than the Hayate feature; it’s got that going for it.

Except the Hayate feature was as entertaining as any manga mini-arc save for the “serious” ones. Not to mention it’s canon. Not to mention it does not break the established premise in any way. Not to mention that it was well animated. Not to mention that it was rather well-directed. (Not to mention it had loli-twintail-Maria-ojou-sama. <- not really being serious here but the point still stands) The only glaring fault I see is that it needed more Hinagiku. It was a decent Nagi-centric movie overall, easily on par with the average level of the manga.

On the other hand, Negima Final was facepalm-inducing with each plot twist it pulled.

  12. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 7:29 am

I have no idea why SHAFT is sucking so hard when it comes to Negima. It’s like they actively hate it or the fans somehow.

I highly agree with the Hayate movie being better, I enjoyed that quite a bit despite certain transgressions in the continuity. And that movie was properly animated and still looked nice despite being DVD plus it also had loli-twintail Maria-ojou. That’s how you make a movie dammit.

Well I’m definitely not rebuying the movie on blu-ray if it eventually comes out. UNLESS the fuckers decide to pack it the original reproductions of the Pactio cards with it again. That is, with the non-bling background.

  13. Anise_Punter Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 8:06 am

Look, I understand the appeal of twin-tailed Maria ojou-sama but that Hayate movie was not in the slightest bit funny, and if you’re doing a Hayate movie and you don’t have any funny at all, you’re either missing the point entirely or animating one of the dull Hinagiku-centric arcs. This was clearly the former.

“Being better animated than a SHAFT production” is not worth any points. That’s like saying “More hilarious than the last half of Clannad After Story.”

  14. Da5id Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 9:03 am

Can’t they just give it the FMA: Brotherhood treatment and do it right?

  15. Athos Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 9:13 am

*sigh* I had high hopes from this. I think I remember Kurogane saying he only watched the Yue episode from the Negima OADs, and while that one was pretty decent, I thought most of them were darn near acceptable, specially the last couple ones.

This… is not very encouraging. I really have very little reason to watch it, but I’ll do it anyways so that I can properly rant about it.

  16. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 9:15 am

I’m not saying the Hayate movie was a masterpiece. It would rank merely “ok” in my books over the long run, but it at least did not rape the work entirely. On this metric, it’s definitely better than the Negima movie.

Plus the Hayate manga has been lacking in funny for a long time now… I’m actually kinda glad Hata took time off. He really didn’t have much of a long term plan for the manga did he?

Oh well Negima’s ending in three more chapters anyways. I really hope Akamatsu doesn’t bungle it up.

EDIT: Yes, I’ve only watched the first three OAD’s + the Yue one properly. I still haven’t gotten around to finish the remaining ones off :(

  17. Algester Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 9:29 am

I’m still speechless… well the only chance I’d see Akamatsu to bungle it up is another time travel hijinks…. will there be a chance for that might be so

Well for something that was originally set to be made in two months what do you expect? There was no way in hell this movie was going to work. The minute they decided to make their own ending they doomed it.

  21. Tiresias Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 12:54 pm

I was expecting the movie to be somewhat poor after seeing how SHAFT bungled the OVA’s (never, ever, ever let Shinbo touch Negima as long he still has head-tilt fetish), but after reading this summary…BAALLLS!

Wow, did Ken actually approved this sacrilege? I suddenly fear the quality of the manga ending EVEN MORE.

  24. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    February 22, 2012 @ 4:26 pm

    >scan the cards

    Short answer: No.

Long answer: Most, if not all the cards should already have hi-res scans from the manga versions available online. There is also the problem that is the bling/foil paper it is printed on, so scanning the cards will probably be extremely hard/annoying to do due to the fact the the background is reflective.

Also I don’t have access to real scanners, and I am sure that someone will inevitably scan the cards with one.

Astounding, up to this day, there has been no proper Negima anime yet.

  31. Silver Said,

The thing about Negima is that… the only thing that EVER came out good in animated form were the OVAs. Everything else was shit. The original anime, the “remake” my ass shit (Negima!?), and now this. It’s like, well if it’s ever an animated version of Negima, let us all make it into shit. Anyway… back to the manga it and the actual good OVAs that’s the only remaining savior for anything properly animated of Negima.

I’m not sure what it says that my first thoughts after actually finishing the movie was not about the canon but more along the lines of “How pissed must Kurogane have been to not screencap Secchan in the pool, that goes against every rule of anime blogger ever.” (case in point, your very next PapaKiki post)

The 30-pactios part made absolutely no sense at all (their power comes from the Magister Magi, how can he get stronger from them giving him back his own power?) and made less sense when Chao appeared and this one extra person provided sufficient energy for the Spirit Bomb to connect, er, whatever you call that. I find it hard to believe that Negi and Evangeline (who is not on school grounds in space, pretty sure) could have taken out that barrier by themselves.

As for absorbing Mars into Earth, what if Mars was just a magic projection the entire time? I would not put it past Jack Rakan to come up with something that preposterous.

All in all, certainly more entertaining than the Hayate OVA, or god forbid, that last OVA set that sent you into a Ragepost (Belldandy may have been involved; now those were a nonsensical mess), even with only four seconds of Rakan.

  34. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    February 23, 2012 @ 7:25 pm

Oh.. I was very pissed off.

I’ve been following Negima! since the first chapter came out all the way back in 2003 and have never lost track of it since then until now. It is rather amazing how engrossing the manga is, especially in regards to Akamatsu’s idea of magic in the world setting.

So now, this movie, billed as an alternative ending to the manga, is pretty much shitting and pissing on the setting that I really loved for almost a decade now, and doing it in the most shallow ways… yeah, extremely pissed.

Hell I spent nearly 2 hours writing the post above, fuelled by sheer rage. The shame…

The A!MS OAD’s were pretty fucking bad too, but at least those had some eyecandy and didn’t last for 76 minutes….

  35. OverMaster Said,

    February 23, 2012 @ 8:24 pm

Don’t put all the blame of the stupid plot on SHAFT. Remember, this is the way Akamatsu originally intended to end the manga. This was HIS idea.

And I’m afraid this is still better than the GRIM DARK ending the manga will end. WEhich will wrap nothing up properly, either.

I actually liked the transformation sequences.
