I dunno, first episode was mildly amusing, but this was Gintama-level boring. Had to be expected, i guess.

I feel like this show is missing one thing that could vault it from being really good to being spectacularly good, but I can’t really think of what it is.

I do know that I lose it every time Hidenori yells “IMOUTO!!!!!!”, him going HAM on the script is hilarious.

Totally did not notice “giant elongated head man” amongst all the oddities in the EN sequence.

If you can see the punchline coming, it isn’t funny. This transcends subjectivity and upbringing.

I also thought the first episode was funnier, but I think it’s unfair to compare this to Gintama. Gintama’s comedy relies on violence and overreactions. It’s a little different than 4 minute gags.

There is also the part about Gintama still being fucking awesome even after 6 years on air.

I think the one nobody saw coming was the girl in the convex mirror, I know I wouldn’t if I didn’t watch the preair skits @_@ !

I thought the first skit was tremendously funny. Also the Lady skit and the scary story skit (maybe because I’ve also discovered the mysterious super long, thin, white eyebrow myself)

The principal one though was…not really. Also I noticed there were a lot of oddities in the subs like “sore ba ii deshou” => “that’s just great” instead of “you could just shave that!”.

The ending was awesome, but I’m not sure I entirely got it. I have to watch again…

Gintama also depends a lot on pop culture (from a generation ago…) and Japanese culture (for example, Shimpachi is always saying “that’s something that should be left unsaid” when they say something crass or inappropriate or break the 4th wall, etc). It’s amazing they run that in Jump. Actually I feel like Sket Dance has a little of this going on as well…

@ Athos, I disagree about the punchline thing. I can often see the punchline coming in these shows and this type of humor, but it’s no less funny when it happens. The same is true in classical music humor such as Peter Schickele. He did a great little piece where he holds a common tone far too long to be reasonable. Anybody who knows that style of music knew as soon as he started holding that note that he would hold it 5 measures and it would sound ridiculous, but it was still hilarious when that fifth measure came.

Same idea here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtqtrCbj3kk) You know once he gets going exactly what sort of joke he’ll make, but it is no less funny when it happens.

I think a major part of the enjoyment is seeing the guys do stupid things that the viewer himself once did. That was why the first skit was so funny; we’ve all done dumb shit like that when we were around that age.

    @Himajin Breaker

Agreed; the greatest toy a teenage guy could get is a nice strong stick with a good length.

    …So much fond memories =D

I didn’t get the school play gag in the slightest… Whilst I recognise a couple of characters being cosplayed… I don’t quite get that whole sketch… Any kind wise soul care to teach this ignorant fool?

When you were in high school, did your class ever do something as fabulous as that play?

Actually, we did. Not that crazy on the props, but it was a comedy.

I wrote the script and directed the play too.
