Fate/Zero 08

Irisviel showing off her skills.

Just too bad Kotomine is way out of her league. Man… he broke the tree using some weird skill didn’t he? Luckily Kiritsugu made the choice to keep Avalon with her… or otherwise there would be so much hate for Kotomine.

On Saber’s end…

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaah take that Caster!

Too bad Lancer’s Master didn’t fare as well as he did.

God, I don’t even want to start imagining how it would feel as Kayneth getting hit by Kiritsugu’s special bullets. Hell, I almost felt sorry for him, if only he wasn’t such an arrogant prick. Really.. being Lancer is suffering.

Another great episode this week from Fate/Zero. I liked entire presentation of the episode, especially with the BGM-cinematography coordination. The shot of Saber in the middle of a dissolving field of monsters was timed perfectly right with the BGM. Irisviel’s alchemy summoning BGM was especially great too. Oh man, we have to till MARCH before the CD is out. Not to mention as a part of the boxset too orz.

The “weird technique” that Kotomine use is actually ‘one-inch punch’ of Bruce Lee fame, amped up to eleven.

Kiri should somehow implement command spells on everyone in his harem. Leave it to female independent action to screw up ones plans …

    PS Kotomine fucking owns.

I’d love to see the reactions of people who’ve never played the VN or read Fate/Zero when Kotomine busts out his skills. That fucker is not to be messed with. Gotta give Maiya credit for lasting even 5 seconds in melee.

Leaving aside my comment about Irisiviel (she’s freakin awesome), besides Iskander, I’m just totally loving Lancer more and more! Whenever he and Saber are together, it just seems so awesome. Their personality and principles are just a total match and they’re so noble too!

Kotomine knows kungfu… FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF~ Multiclassing rules in Nasuverse are broken if he’s that OP’d…

And this guy is supposed to rank lower than Ciel???

  9. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

Hey, he’s supposed to be pretty high up in the organization. It’s just that Ciel has seniority owing to *CURRY*.

Irisviel and Maiya sitting around on their asses gawking instead of finishing off Kotomine when they had the chance, they totally deserve what they got. He was immobilized for a good fifteen seconds, just shoot the fucker in the back already. Christ.

Also Kotomine doesn’t get a piledriver with a hoofed loli inside.

  12. Kherubim Said,

    November 20, 2011 @ 8:18 pm

Mapo tofu not as senior as curry? I shudder at the thought of someone like him holding onto a Conceptual Weapon…

Also, in addition to being Lancer is suffering, being Lancer’s Master is even more suffering (looks like in addition to being crippled, Kayneth’s going to get NTR’d next)…

  13. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    November 20, 2011 @ 8:44 pm

Did you even watch the episode, Anon? They’ve kinda established he was Immune to Bullets, so I doubt Maiya shooting him in the back would’ve changed things much.

At least they put up an valiant effort in to it.

    As for Lancer, pretty much all the Lancers and their Masters have had horrible fates or two… except maybe Bazett in the end. So yeah, being Lancer is truly suffering ;_;

Kotomine Kirei’s skills as an Executioner are stated to be about on par with Ciel, actually. However, her insane magic potential (average magus = 25 prana; Rin, a genius, = 250 inborn, 500 with Crest; Ciel = 2500 inborn x_x) and the unique characteristic of being pretty much unkillable (before Tsukihime happened, anyway) give her the edge. Besides, she was appointed to the Burial Agency from the start and didn’t have to climb up to her position. Finally, Kirei simply lacks the ambition to climb any higher than he already is.

  15. Peniblec Said,

    November 20, 2011 @ 9:58 pm

@Kurogane: Yup, about this Immunity to Bullets, when was it established really? All I remember is Maiya shooting a couple of bullets to cover her escape in episode 7, but I just assumed the lack of result was because she shot wildly to intimidate him and leave some room between them.
Then this episode comes out and Maiya unloads a whole clip on Kirei, who just /charges into the bullets/. What. I mean he’s not running sideways faster than Maiya can aim at him, he’s not waving his swords at blinding speed to deflect the shots, he just RUNS INTO THE GRAALDAMNED BULLETS.
So either there’s something in the novel which has not been told yet in the anime, or I missed part of a conversation, or we’re just supposed to believe that Kirei can take a whole magazine from a machine gun while running towards it. Wait, scratch that last part, from what you’re saying we’re supposed to believe Kirei can take a whole magazine *period*, since shooting him in the back would have been useless.

Don’t get me wrong, Kirei’s one of my favourite characters, but he does start to seem a bit overpowered if he can survive such firepower. I might not be extremely familiar with the Nasuverse, so maybe it’s a given that an Executor can reinforce his body to the point of shrugging off a SHOTGUN TO THE FACE with no significant mana expenditure (I mean compared to that Kiritsugu’s ability to manipulate time seems worthless considering the exhaustion), but then I’ll have to seriously reconsider how badass Kirei really is.

Kotomine breaks the tree due to pure kung fu – but not precisely one inch punch (his hands are tied to the tree. He uses the strength of his entire body to break the tree.)

Rest assured Kuro – my hate of Kotomine is undimished.

Regarding bulletproof Kotomine – supposedly he’s got a lot of kevlar in those vestments of his. Nonetheless, indeed she should’ve just shot him in the head. Repeatedly.

  17. dantheman Said,

Kotomine’s coat is made by Kevlar and reinforced by magic, its standard equipment for the executors of the church.

  18. Kryptik Said,

    November 20, 2011 @ 11:46 pm

Yeah, but the big difference is that the Masters tend to deserve their comeuppance and suffering. The Lancers get dicked around by asshole Masters, both personally and by proxy. Bazett gets spared this by…well, not being a master of a Lancer for terribly long.

It makes me wonder if there’s some kind of unspoken condition of the Lancer class of ‘Enevitable Fuck-Over’.

In the preview, when Iskander goes, “my Master is almost killed”, my thought immediately goes, “NO, that goes my(Iskander’s) XXXL pants!” Sorry, I think I have a horrible personality.
Also, the BGM is AWSOME as always..

  20. ewok40k Said,

Kotomine is supposed to be only slightly worse in melee than Ciel, which was able to go toe-to-toe with THINGS like Arcueid.
This means, for average mage he is what Chuck Norris, even if not being quite a Bruce Lee is to normal mortal. The only difference is in overkill.

  21. takashid Said,

    November 21, 2011 @ 6:50 am

Peniblec: Kirei is not immune to bullets. He is still a human under all that training. If he is shot in the heart or head, he will die. The reason he could run through Maiya’s bullets is because the Priest outfit he is wearing (which is the standard uniform for all executors) is lined with Kevlar and protection spells that make it bulletproof. Thats why he raised his arms to sheild his unguarded face when he charged in at Maiya.

The scene with him and the tree was just bad directing. In the novel, its indicated that Kirei breaks the tree very quickly, Iri is focusing on her spell and can’t do anything, and Maiya is struggling to get up and shoot him. Problem is, Mayia at this point has broken ribs and internal bleeding, so she can’t do it in time. If they had been able to get a gun, then as long as they aimed for his head, they could have killed him.

  25. Ikas Said,

What Kirei use to break the tree actually a palm strike using both hand’s strength with his feets as accelerate (imagine that he’s actually body slam to the tree in a very close range), one-inch punch as you said was actually different in stance and movement. Somehow Kirei able to change his hands positions despire being tied both hands tied together and to the tree is a wonder to me. (Guess Irisviel was careless).

    Sorry for my bad english

P/S: Origin Bullet is really fearsome, no wonder Kiritsugu was branded as Mage Killer.

@takashid: Okay, that makes more sense, thank you for the precision ^^ rewatched the scene and yes, I had forgotten the whole “raising arms to protect head” business. I suspected the bad directing in the tree scene, I guess it’ll happen a lot with Fate, since in the novels characters ponder for pages between each strike (Saber vs Lancer suffered from this IMO) and there’s no easy way to convey these monologues in anime form.

Oh well :) as long as Kiritsugu’s bullets quit having a coffee pause halfway to their target to let them cast a defensive spell, I’ll roll with it ^^

More than anything I’m supprised about Illi’s use of the Etherlite at such a hugh level. I thought only Sion’s family could use the etherlite at all let alone make it take form and Illi comes through and throws that thought out the window in style. Damn Illi stop being so high tier

It’s a shame that – being a prequel – I’ve got to resign myself to the fact that my two favorite characters in the show (Iri and Maiya) won’t live to tell the tale. I already know that Urobuchi Gen is gonna wring it out of me bigtime. Urgh…

So the preview seems to indicate that Kayneth will be pretty much forced to pass on his command spells to his “wife”? Boy, is he going to be in a world of hurt: His wife clearly has the hots for Lancer. Delicious…

One more sidecomment: Ufotable still manages to keep the production values exceptionally high. I love it! And well, Kajiura Yuki is out of this world anyway.

  31. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

That’s not Etherlite, it’s Magecraft alchemy. Irisviel is from a family of alchemists and she is a very high-grade Homunculus, able to even create life on her own (Ilya). The skill she has though, is quite an original application of the Magecraft though, but it’s not a very strong combat skill as we’ve seen in the show…

As for Kayneth, from what I’ve heard you would almost feel sorry for the bugger towards the end of this cour… eh, we’ll see how it’ll be translated to the anime.

    Real shame about Irisviel though.

Yes, I was shocked too when I found out that putting Waver into a schoolgirl outfit had a canon source.

Despite me see that bullets had no effect on old Kirei, I still think the two gals should have done something while he was tied up to that tree…shoot him again or throw a rock at him or something-anything.

(Then again, they do have acceptable excuses)
