Dantalian no Shoka 01

Dantalian no Shoka

Well that was fairly interesting, despite the reading-books battle part.

Miyukichi looks set to really shine in here, with her haughty voicing of Dalian that I’ve not heard since her Shinku in Rozen Maiden. But surprisingly, Ono Daisuke is the show-stealer here with his cool portrayal of Huey. A male protagonist that doesn’t complain or shout about how crazy shit starts going when he finds a beautiful young maiden in his grandfather’s cellar and instead inadvertently insults her, followed by making tea and lunch? This show is already better than the rest of the shows this season by virtue of that already! Not to mention he’s a distinguished pilot, a noble and also doesn’t freak out when dragons attack. It’s almost cheating!

I wonder who’s the pink haired lotus-head character though. Please don’t tell me knowledge-hoarding demons are supposed to look like that.

I actually really like this show so far. It would have been cooler if he didn’t just kill things by reading, but Ono Daisuke’s fantastic monologue almost made it entirely worth it. Looking forward to the next episode.

Ono Daisuke makes any male protagonist awesome.

I think i like Dalian’s light novel character design better then the one in the anime though it might grow on me probably.

I agree that Huey is a very cool character.

Don´t complain, if a goddamn dragon wants to grill you, just shoot it!

My eyes are bleeding from the character design. I hate you GAINAX.

Meh character designs and all, but personally I loved the kill-by reading part. Not only is this something we haven’t seen yet (it is different than the old-school Slayers incantations and similar stuff), we actually got the main character’s life story AND character development in the middle of a battle! That’s kind of incredible. A pleasure to listen to even outside of the plot itself. Had to watch/listen twice to get all the subtleties and meaning, but if a show can make watch it twice, all the more power to it.

I wonder if we’ll see more of this kind of montage. I’m all for it, for one. But they’ll have to work on turning the extermination into an actual battle, and not an automatic kill, because doing more than one easy victory like that won’t get them any fans. Even in this episode, things could have been synched a bit better. Still liked it, though.

So that’s why I kept thinking of Shinku all the time. That and the violins.

Seems like the franchise is having problems as for now: http://shinigamilist.com/2011/09/07/dantalian-no-shoka-novel-cancelled/
