Puella Magi Madoka Magica 09

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

“Don’t worry Sayaka. Being alone sucks doesn’t it? That’s okay, I’ll be with you.”

;_; Kyouko

So… Kyouko finally bows out of the show. Considering all the death flags that she’s been tripping, it’s not a surprise I guess.

Now we’re down to one Puella Magi and Madoka, with the Walpurgis Nacht incoming. Looks like Kyubey’s dastardly plans are slowly bearing fruit.

Speaking of Kyubey, looks like my suspicions were proven true, but I didn’t expect to hit the mark so close. He’s finally admitted himself to be a member of another civilization that possess the ability to change emotions in to energy, but unfortunately they themselves have no such things (Makes one wonder how they made the machine in the first place).

The elephant in the room that no one brought up or discussed turns out to the Universe facing entropy death from the laws of thermodynamics and the members of Kyubey’s civilization hatched a plan to avoid that by harvesting energy from Puella Magi and Witches, which somehow aren’t subjected to entropy. And since hope and despair are some of the most intense and powerful emotions, the QB’ians (FLOABW) devised this whole little setup to harvest energy twice-fold.

Madoka seems to be the key person in all this, because she can apparently release a massive amount of emotional energy (does that mean she’s emo?! lol) and not only she’ll be the strongest Puella Magi, she’s also destined to be the most terrible Witch as well. With the resultant giant energy boost helping the Universe chug on a bit longer.

And Sayaka’s Witch look will never not remind you of a fly.

Internally, I was actually pretty convinced he was harvesting their energies somehow but I am surprised to have gotten the entropy part partially right as well. Although I must say that even though I managed to call it, I am pretty disappointed about Kyubey just dumps the info on wailing Madoka just like that, complete with textbook explanations as well. I guess the execution wasn’t up to par.

And that being said, I felt this episode of Madoka was actually pretty weak in terms of execution compared to the past 8 weeks. It seems though, the production team wants to stop with the brainfuck already and just decided to do the infodump + removing Kyouko in the same episode before (hopefully) dedicating the rest of their efforts for the last spurt (10,11,12).

Now that there’s only Homura left and with a big ‘threat’ on the way, I guess one way or another, Madoka’s going to be forced to sign that damn contract with Kyubey and become a Puella Magi. And after this episode, I’m actually quite supportive of that idea!

    >>Well, there goes the “Sayaka is the prologue witch” hypothesis.

That was a weak hypothesis to begin with

    @drmchsr0: I herped so hard I derped.

@Mentar: Well, he’s not so bad now that’s he’s actually trying to prevent the heat death of the universe! I mean, I’m kinda seeing it from his end too! Also, it’s high time Madoka finally did something more useful than just tagging along and being a passive character. Seriously, it’s been too long.

@SDB: Um, they can cleanse their Soul Gems with the Grief Seeds. I suspect she must have a nice cache of them somewhere. Or she might not really need them and it seems that fully turning in to a Witch requires the person to be full of despair at first. Homura doesn’t seem to have that yet.

    >>“If you feel like dying for your universe just call us”

Oh god that line really hurts.

    >>Oh Fuuko, why oh why did you kill yourself?!?! T_____T

Guess she lost hope already but didn’t want to become a Witch.

@ahelo: you must be joking right? Kyubey = Alien was like…. confirmed very early.

i don’t think so on her dream she sees homura fightning that i believe is walpurgis night and didn’t turned mahou shoujo. so when she is about to wish that homura catch her and pulls her to the past that’s why she still get some memory to “have we meet before?”
or maybe she wishes that all of this shouldn’t happen? well wishes and time travel sure is hard to tell

I hope this is like, the calm before the storm in terms of episode value. Like, the dip before the surge on the awesomeness charts. Because I agree with Kurogane on the point that this week’s episode definitely started showing some weakness in terms of execution, and a bit of the writing as well. The whole entropy thingie was cool from the start, but all in all, you’re like, using magic to solve science’s problems, which kinda sounds… Off. not that I’m saying the explanation given was by any means bad, it was very acceptable, I just wished it was more… Magical instead of “alien race needs moar power overwhelmingz”.

Hope the last “arc” will be awesomely full of awesomeness.

Just realized, now that we know that it’s grief that causes Puella Magi to degrade into witches, it suddenly makes a LOT of sense why Homura’s so… emotionless. She’s known that all along, plus she most likely knew about the balance thing as well (all happiness gets balanced by grief somewhere else), so it’s no wonder she keeps her emotions in check, they could get her killed (or worse)!

@Suning: I wouldn’t read too much into that, I think Madoka was merely trying to figure out why this person she hardly knows was getting so torn up over her. Most people don’t start crying over someone they don’t know.

Ah, finally somebody does something about this pesky entropy problem! I am so glad.

(Also, damn, got that entropy bit spoiled by looking at the IS post, which I checked because I wanted to see your reaction to Laura, just before watching the episode. Well, not like it mattered much…)

I do agree, the way Kyuubei explained everything was pretty lame there was a reason for it. This series was still in production when the earthquake and tsunami’s hit Japan. Actually, because of that disaster they had to change the whole plot towards the end. Don’t get me wrong I like the way it did end, but I’m curious as to what may have been.
