Puella Magi Madoka Magica 05

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Generally a bridge episode with some nice action scenes at the back.

First things first, looks like Kyubey’s wishes don’t have any “hidden” tricks, at least for Sayaka’s case. Kyousuke nicely got his hand back and even did an impromptu performance for Sayaka, prompting a death flag her saying she’s on the peak of happiness.

There’s also Sayaka’s henshin scene, which looks quite traditional mahou shoujo-ish.

Her fighting style seems to be a little mix of her own melee skills and Mami’s UNLIMITED RIFLE WORKS.

Secondly, since this was a budget episode, there was quite a bit of chatter and background reveals too, alongside with the usual “I want to be helpful” stuff from Madoka and Sayaka. Homerun-chan continues to be a giant bitch to Madoka though, even though her actions always seem to imply otherwise.

Generally though there was two pretty important bits this week:

  1. Kyubey does not know about Homura.
He certainly confirmed to Kyouko that she is an “irregular” that even he doesn’t know about her motives, etc. I guess that is why Homura could attack him.
  2. The type of wishes can influence the magical girl abilities you take on.
For example, Kyubey reveals that Sayaka’s wish was to heal someone, she has better endurance/fortitude as a magical girl. Now that certainly sounds very interesting.

But well, there’s also the alternative possibility of there being multiple Kyubey’s…. shit, I’d rather take the time travel theory. Plus, that tidbit about the wishes influencing their mahou-shoujo stats? Oh dear god, bring on the SPECULAH right now.

And oh, Kyubey’s contract ceremony is kinda…. well, see for yourself :|

Kyouko is also being set up as the huge bitch pretty well, and her weapons even kinda reflect that too. It’s a spear that is pretty flexible, with Kyouko being able to split it in to sections or elongate it and use it as a whip of sorts that allows her really good balance between offense and defense. Really, Sayaka was quite outclassed fighting her with only her sword. Also, she casually chomps on taiyaki…. HEAD-FIRST of course. Man, seriously what a bitch.

This week ends on a pretty good cliffhanger though, with Homura pulling a Big Damn Hero moment saving Sayaka from imminent impalement, plus points for that hair swish thing too. Dammit, this is why I can’t get mad at Homura-chan even though her words are sharp as knives. Also, DEM LEGS, argh.

Ending card this week is by another Nitroplus artist.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

…and Mami’s still in it. Dammit, SHAFT. DAMMIT!

P.S. Goddamnit it SHAFT, stop it with the closeups on Kyubey’s fucking eyes. I should also add there was a HORRIBLY disturbing shot of Kyubey with his eyes all unbalanced on his face. I’m going to have nightmares tonight :(.

Asking SHAFT to stop with the closeups is like… I can’t even think of a valid comparison.

I found myself enjoying this episode.

SHAFT just going to keep doing more or even more extreme close ups you contiue to ask them.

Sayaka go some nice moves and the fight between her and Kyouko was pretty good. Interesting that she is a staff type fighter and not hand to hand.

“wishes can influence the magical girl abilities” which really adds to what was Homura’s and Mami’s wish that gave them their powers. Does Mami have more abilities than just summoning guns? What connection does Homura’s explosion attacks have to her wish?

At this point, I’ve suppositions for two wishes Madoka could ask for:

    1. Resurrecting Mami.
    2. Wishing to be a (powerful) Magical Girl.

I find the idea of number 2 thought-provoking. If what you wish for influence how powerful a Puella Magi you are, what happens if your wish is to be a Puella Magi?

I’m still rooting for 1, though. If I was in Madoka’s position, with Madoka’s angst and regrets it’s what I’d pick. After all, wasn’t the alternative wishing for cake? In a way “I fight for Mami’s life” is exactly what Madoka had set out to do before the end of Episode 3 and it’s a lot more credible than “I fight for cake”.

Ive been thinking before this episode that their personalities affected their arsenals more.. Since:
Mami was “civilized,” so she was armed with fancy firearms.
Homura is a blunt and straightforward type of person, so she got Time-stop/Blink/Warp, whatever it may be, because it wasn’t showy.
Kyouko is sort of boisterous and therefore gets a larger, more attention-grabbing weapon.
Sayaka seems to be “in the moment” and short-minded so she got a Knight of Justice outfit with a sword.

I was anticipating Kyouko’s hero rescue so much at the end that I was disappointed by the abrupt end :/

Why not just wish to be Kyubey? Not only do you get infinite adorableness, you’ll get unlimited wishes too.

you have to shiver every time the do a closeup on kyubey’s eyes like that.

the time travel theory for homura is definately making sense. from how things sound it seems like there is only one kyubey and no others or else it could have just written off Homura as having had to be contracted to someone else. unless kyubey is in the dark on how some of this stuff works as well or isn’t at the top of the magical girl pyramid as he may seem.

At this point, it was made pretty clear that becoming a magical girl is the worst idea possible unless you desperately need to achieve a goal otherwise impossible for you, and is ready to take up on the Kyouko’s attitude once the contract is made. No pity for naive characters who happen to be in denial…

If Mami’s wish is not die in that accident, does that mean she might have an immortality ability!?!?

  11. Doddler Said,

    February 4, 2011 @ 1:34 pm

The idea that the wish itself affects their power was hinted at a while ago, when Kyubey told Madoka that her power (and size of her soul gem) would depend on what she wished for.

Considering both these things, Mami is going to eventually revive and I’m thinking Madoka will wish for nothing(?) ergo super all powerful special magical girl desu.

I’m calling it now the little black cat from the opening is Kyubey/the devils little helper’s other good half that Homerun made a contract with and will also make a contract with Madoka, the rest of the series will be Madoka, Homerun and Kuroneko vs Sayaka, Kyouko and Kyubey with classic SHAFT devil worshiping.

    Speculate outcome

The only way to defeat Kyuubey is to defeat all Puella Magi with only one Puella Magi left behind, then that Puella Magi should sacrifice herself, so the entity known as Kyuubey would disappear.

    Real Prologue
From another parallel world, Older Madoka (Puella Magi) and Kyuubey destroys all impurities known as witches. But the situation is endless, and majority of people around Madoka have died or fallen. With only her cat left, she used all her soul gem and turn her cat into a human being, telling her to form a contract with Kyuubey so she can prevent her from turning into a Older Madoka. “The higher the soul gem, the greater evil is unleashed, the only way to stop this is to kill Kyuubey or stop Madoka from turning into one.” as she whispered then disappears from the Witch Zone. Homura the former cat, went to Kyuubey and ask for a contract with her wish to return to the time when Kyuubey will encounter the young Madoka, at first Kyuubey don’t want that wish to be granted, but due to the powers of Madoka shining with Homura, he accepted it.

After the events in the past World, Homura returns to the future, and this time the evil Kyuubey was surprised with the return of Madoka, then defeats him completely with Homura reverting back into a black cat, and everyone is alive once again, with only Madoka knows what happened.

    The End….

  18. brittlemind Said,

That actually makes sense. Why will SHAFT have that cat in the OP? Genius.

  19. Kagekyuubi Said,

    February 4, 2011 @ 7:11 pm

If we go by that time travel cat theory then should we assume that future Madoka is an alternate version of Kiritsugu facing an inescapable fate and Homerun is Archer, the only one that future Madoka has left after all the hardship and losses she’s been through that’s been sent to the past to correct the biggest mistake of Madoka’s life?

…That’s just depressing enough to be be the case.

In my head, Madoka takes place in FUUTO CITY!

And there is only one way to defeat DAT KYUUBEY.

*cue all the Heisei Kamen Riders performing their final attacks at Kyuubey.

Not related: When Homura saves Sakaya, Time Judged All shold be playing. RIGHT??? RIGHT???????

*is delusional from grief and probably needs a few Rider Kicks to the head.

IF Homura’s ability is not teleportation, but time and space manipulation, then it fits with the time traveling theory, oooo

@arigatou That has to be one of the best cat theories i’ve heard

Facial close ups (especially eyes) was something I thought SHAFT always had a penchant for.
This series is amazing tho. Every week, Mind = Blown. In a good way. xD

Oh god, Kyouko really gets on my nerves. She really deserves to get some slappin’ in her face to get her down on the ground again.

Otherwise, I was very pleased at the unlimited blade works-esque fighting style she had against the witch-minion. I’d say Sayaka attacked Kyouko only with her sword because she was still new at it all.

But yes, time travel theory: still plausible, your wish affects your ability: confirmed? Also, Homerun-chan has haste/timeslow? Fuck yeah!
