Puella Magi Madoka Magica 04

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Oh Sayaka, oh my dear, dear Sayaka….

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

As expected, it’s grieving time for Mami. If it was hard on us viewers, it can’t even compare to both of them seeing it first-hand. Mami-san ;_;

On the other hand….

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Seriously, I think I spent half the episode mourning Mami’s death along with Madoka and the other half raging super hard at Kyubey. God damn that little fucker. Not only he doesn’t give a shit about Mami’s death, he dumps the girls like they’re used goods right after they decline him, APPEARS CONVENIENTLY WHEN SAYAKA’S AT HER WEAKEST MOMENT, and then manages to setup a little MG blue-on-blue as well. You little-girl victimizer little shit.

Okay, that being said about Kyubey, I’d like to give credits on how “intense” this episode was following the shocker of episode 3. I went through this whole episode feeling extremely heavy-hearted and I’ll admit it was quite a big downer episode. Hell, after watching the raw, I actually kinda put off watching it again with the subs as well as writing this blog post. In many ways, this episode not only makes us realise that Mami’s death was not just a random shocker, but part of an intricately planned story and I’m glad to be actually watching writing of this quality so far. Hell, as I’ve tweeted earlier, Madoka’s been exceeding my expectations for four straight episodes in a row.

Heck, this episode made me realize it was possible to get creeped out by Ryoko Shintani.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

That’s quite an achievement by itself. And speaking of seiyuus, am I the only one who thinks Yuko Gotou’s voice was super deep this week?

As for the new mahou shoujo, Condom-chan Kyouko, looks like she’s set to play the super bitch of the show for now. While I am a little disappointed it wasn’t Kana Asumi as speculated earlier, getting Aipon to voice her is quite a masterstroke as well. Aipon can be reeeeeeeeallly bitchy when she wants to be, so yeah.

Now that’s I’ve come this far, I’ve just realized that I haven’t said anything about Madoka herself yet so far. Her reactions to Mami’s death, while depressing to watch, don’t exactly go to the point of being annoying. Once you factor in that she’s just really a girl too kind for own good, well. And in any case, she’s not that weak that she doesn’t stay paralyzed while trapped in a warehouse full of people trying to commit mass suicide. Her throwing that bucket out of the window really sent a message about her character. I have to say, Aoi Yuuki’s voicing for Madoka is getting better and better by the episode.

But still, it’s been four episodes and she’s still not yet a magical girl, but funnily enough, I’d have to say I’d rather she not become one and I suspect a lot of viewers are on Homura’s stance as well right now. Still, we know that’s going to be inevitable, but the question remains in what circumstances will she be signing her own death warrant contract, I just hope it’s not in another situation like the one currently playing out right now… fucking Kyubey.

And this week’s end card, to round the post up. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Jin Kobayashi’s work :3. The episode title itself is also pretty ominous enough…

Actually, I’ve always wondered why can’t some of the magical girls wish for “no witches in the world”, “our magic would always be self-regenerating” or even “world peace”?

Like many others, I was thinking that Madoka was going to use her wish to wish Mami back in this week’s episode..but hey, nice play by SHAFT.

10 bucks on Kamijou going “WAHAHAHHA MY ARM POWER IS BACK!” and ending up as some bat-shit insane psycho who doesn’t even bother about Sayaka, leading to her commiting seppuku with her new sword. “hypersonic stab!” *stabs*

It’s possible that Sayaka dies next episode if she’s up against a pro like Kyoko… unless Homura butts in.

Oh and would you like to join the advocacy of spreading this —> ( ◕ ω ◕ ) <— as the new symbol for the devil? XD

Euhj. The crying Madoka tears my heart. I start weeping like a little girl when she goes to Mami’s place. Poor little thing :(

    I’m also afraid something horrible will happen to Sayaka, now that her death flag has popped up. The girls don’t deserve to be dragged through piles of shit after shit. ;_;

    PS. QB is a dick.

How would it be annoying? It seems like there’s some sort of unwritten rule about how characters are supposed to grieve or not. :v

@Chris, taking a page from the book of Walachia:

No witches in the world = destroy the world and witches are now in outer space.
Our magic would always be self-regenerating = no limit to the amount or speed of regeneration and you would explode for too much magic.
World peace = kill everyone so there is peace.

I am sure Kyubey will follow the same kind of rules on his wish granting…

I was surprised, that Madoka or Sayaka didn´t even THOUGHT about using a wish to revive Mami! Why?

I was hoping for the whole episode for Madoka and Sayaka not to sell their souls to the creepy Kyubei. I really hoped they would follow Homura’s advice :(
Even if we know it’s going to happen, still…

Kyubei: “I cannot force you to make a contract” and left. Then he “just happened” to be on the window of Kamijou’s room. Also, it “just happened” that Madoka met her friend with a witch’s mark going to a mass suicide.

So much hate is accumulating on Kyubei that it would be shocking to discover that he is infact good…

Ahh, the Power of the King brings nothing but solitude. Still, it’s sadly a matter of time untill Madoka accepts the terms of the contract.

QB is evil and this episode has evidence of that. He says goodbye to the girls but as soon as Sayaka was in a tight spot, he was there. Next he just happens to call another magical girl who only do things for herself just as Sayaka is taking care of the town.

Anyway the fight between Sayaka and Kyouko will happen no matter what but we wont know who will come out alive from it. I would like to say that Sayaka will get her butt kicked by Kyouko but just as Kyouko is just about to deliver the final blow, Madoka emotions will transform her in to a magical girl and save Sayaka. From there I expect something big to happen since Madoka transformed.

The more I rewatch the Madoka ED, the more I feel that Madoka-chan will end up giving her life for a cause of some sort… D:

The idea I see this show’s pushing so far is basically earning your own happiness vs trying to find an easy way out of your problems. You have Modoka’s mom as described in episode 3:

“Hmm… It’s not the work she likes, it’s how hard she works.
She likes the satisfied feeling she gets after she overcomes all of her problems.
It doesn’t mean that she dreamed about working for that company.
But Mom is still living her ideal life.
Some dreams come true this way.”

On the contrary, both Sayaka and that injured boy find it too hard to live through the ordeal that they face, so Sayaka decides to run away by seeking out an easy solution. The benefit is instant, there’s no chance of you failing trying to achieve it, but you’ll never be able to pay it off as long as you live, and, probably, you’ll never been able to enjoy your life until it’s paid off.

The funny thing is that Mami, on the contrary, has chosen a more difficult option – it would be easy to just die along with her family in that accident, but instead she opted to live quite a grim life, struggle rather than give up.

So, when Sayaka gets dumped by that guy and/or killed, it will be just your common “moral” development.

Can anyone enlighten me when this show airs again, for I was under the impression that the “mahou shoujo” genre caters mainly to it’s primary demographic children, instead of the secondary demographic the more mature aka lolicon ones. For it while I am intrigued by the grim take on this genre, it flabbergast me that a show supposed to cater to children can be so dark so willing to provide information of how to make chlorine gas.

    Thursdays @ 25:25. Besides, Shaft and children…

Madoka airs at 25:25 on Thursdays (ie. 1:25 a.m, Friday morning). It’s certainly not a timeslot for children – it’s the rare mahou shoujo series being aimed more towards the older viewer.

Quite simply, Kyubey seeks out and sacrifices virgins to the witches. He probably receives some sort of payment, not unlike a Grief Seed. He’s evil, in a very pure form. Non-committal, uncaring bastard. Homura was right to wish to kill him, and probably should finish the job.

Madoka will wish to destroy the core source of the witches, and will lose her family in the process, be it by their deaths, or by (maybe apparently) her own. Her wish must come at the dearest cost, after all. Faust with a sympathetic hero is still Faust.

Even so, if my guess is correct, it doesn’t make this show less epic!

  16. Manabi Said,

@Molarmass: Mahou Shoujo != instant children’s show. Nanoha wasn’t targeted at kids either really, but at adults, same for Madoka. Why people insist on equating the two is beyond me, there’s been lots of non-children’s Mahou Shoujo over the years.
    ( ̄~ ̄;)

I’m really hoping someone barbecues Kyubei before this is over, I really want to see that evil bastard taken out painfully. ヽ(o`皿′o)ノ

I keep thinking Madoka’s the key to ending the current situation for the magical girls and witches both. Somehow her wish will end it all, but she’s probably going to have to pay a very high price indeed to pull it off. (ノД`)・゜・。

Fuko Ibiki as Kyouko hurts my skull.

Holy crap at picture #4, I didn’t see Kyubey’s reflection in her eyes until this blog post. I’m gonna have nightmares of that little prick.

It doesn’t help that the ED ends with Madoka floating in the eye hole of a goddamn Mephisto mask. Faust says “hi”.

The inevitable doom hanging over this show so thick that you could make concrete with it. I haven’t had this “CAN’T… LOOK… AWAY…” feeling about a show since Higurashi.

Have a feeling this series will play out like Bokurano, as in Madoka will become a magical girl probably after Sayaka hits the hay.
