Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

R.I.P. Teacup.

Holy shit. HOOOOOO LEEEEEEEY FUCKIN’ SHIT. Urobuchi finally delivers. Shit gets fucking real this episode. Mami getting konked off this early in the show was entirely expected, yet still unexpected. I’d have thought she would last another episode, but I guess LOL NO TIEM, ONLY ONE COUR.

So yeah, they weren’t kidding about the “put your life on the line” part as Puella Magi. Mami got knocked off really. REALLY. Brutally too. You wouldn’t expect it from a magical girl show unless it was written by Mohiro Kitoh. Or Urobuchi Gen. But yeah, we get the idea now. Chidamari Sketch indeed.

While I was expecting this to happen, they upped the impact 10x by putting in Mami’s past in to the episode.

Basically, Mami was in a car accident when she was younger and was about to die until Kyubey mysteriously appears in front of her and grants her wish to live (be saved?) in return for being a Puella Magi. So she kinda didn’t really get to choose a real wish or anything when she became one. It turns out this leads her in to having a rather sad life of being the Puella Magi and constantly hunting down Witches alone, even though she got to live through that accident. I presume it also explains her lack of family.

Even worse was Madoka basically promising herself to help Mami and be her friend right before they confronted the witch and she got OMNOMNOM’ed by it. Dear god, that’s very unfair, Gen/Shinbo.

On the flipside, Mami did display a lot of badassery with her rifleworks this week and we also got to see Homura’s fighting for the first time too. Looks like she uses Blink + explosives to do her job. Not as showy as Mami, but gets the job done pretty efficiently.

Well, there’s a bunch of other interesting tidbits of info this week too, but basically it looks like Mami = evil theory looks very debunked right now and possibly Homura = cat/timetraveller theory too. I’ve gotta rewatch this after I wake up.

Also, real ED finally kicks in. Now I see why they waited two episodes to do it. Damn ED looks like a Silent Hill or something. Magia is a LOT MORE sinister with the visuals of the ED.

This week’s end card feels wildly inappropriate after the GRIMDARK ED too.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

From the preview title of episode… looks like someone might use wish to revive Mami?

Oh and uh, don’t go too far with the head jokes if you intend to make one. At least try to make them a little funny.

Well, I was always suspicious of Mami because she made the pitch for becoming a Magical Girl even though it was blatantly obvious that it’s a sucker deal at best, and a lingering death sentence at worst. She partially redeemed herself in this episode, because she was coerced into the MG life without any choice, and she was suffering the LONELINESS of it. So this is what she had to gain: Friends. It doesn’t fully absolve her in my eyes from encouraging other girls to jump into the same deadly mess she’s in, but I can understand where she is coming from.

So much for Kyubey – for those who still believe in him. His only interest during the crisis was to contract Madoka and Sayaka. The parallel between him and Mephisto in Faust are now clear as daylight.

Well it took 3 episodes, but this show is finally headed in the right direction. Visually inventive or not, up until now I’d say it was neck and neck with Fractale as the most boring series I was watching this season. I’ve still got complaints, sure, but no particularly biting criticisms.

  5. Athos Said,

    Too fast.

Not the plot progression, the blog post. I shouldn’t need to explain why, and I’ll only point it out today, because, to be honest, I don’t mind at all.

Alas, poor Mami. A Too Cool to Live death was hard to pull off here because, well, they had to make Mahou Shoujos look badass. And yet they pulled it off beautifully. Three episodes in and I can already say that Madoka did not disappoint. Which is kind of an awkward thing to say, since nobody cares about Madoka herself.

  6. metalsnakezero Said,

    Oh god Mami NO! I loved you and now you kicked the bucket ;_;

Indeed this Mahou Shoujos getting deeper and deeper every episode.

  7. Mappy Said,

It’s not the fact that this happened that made it shocking as I was watching the KeyholeTV stream, I think we all guessed that this would happen at some stage. Nor is it the fact that it happened this early in the series…. I can think of a number of shows where the (up until that stage) most obviously interesting character is summarily killed off. No, it was the casualness with which it happened. One moment the show is travelling along as it has up until now, the next…. CHOMP Om nom nom. I had to do a bit of a double take when that happened.

  8. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

@Athos: Either I blogged it right after watching, or I’ll have to wait until I finish work 14 hours later to blog it. Anyways, this is intended to be a proper post for episode 3, because I CBF’ed to do another one if I just posted the big spoiler.

Also, well, if people hate getting spoiled, they shouldn’t read my blog until after the subs come out!

@Mappy: Yeah, one moment Mami was being badass and owning the witch, the next, “CHOMP”. God, that was pretty disturbing,

  9. Silver Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 9:59 am

You know, I was so happy to see the new episode and also decided to read your post. This is my reaction for the last 10 minutes:

Dang, I just don’t know what to say. Like you said, she was owning it for a while and doing an excellent job and them “CHOMP” and it’s over…

  10. ahelo Said,

WOW. There were already signs something bad is gonna happen to her after she explained her past and that scene with Madoka but… WOW. This is no Sakura or Nanoha….. this really is deep shit. This is definitely an AWESOME SHOW.

  11. DocAstaroth Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 10:31 am

    @ Kurogane

It was disturbing, but really, Mami simply triggered too many Death Flags (according to Umineko). If someone says, that the new enemy is different than normal BELIEVE HER! Even if she is not a nice person…

But what is now Homura´s Magic? Pyrokinesis? In this case her name were quite the bad pun…

  12. Athos Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 10:37 am

@Krugoane: “Also, well, if people hate getting spoiled, they shouldn’t read my blog until after the subs come out!”

Don’t do that… I said what I said because I wanted you to think about the consequences of making such a rule! It didn’t bother me today because I was expecting the raw too, but it might become a problem in the future.

Not to make a big deal out of it, but I suggest giving it some thought.

In the meantime, however, I’ll be wary of thursdays from now on.

  13. Haesslich Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 10:51 am

Mami is indeed delicious. Especially her figure.Ditto the Madoka OHSHI– expressions.

Now this is what I was expecting from Puella – and with delicious Ume Aoki designs.

  14. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 12:04 pm

@Athos: you weren’t around the Geass days weren’t you? Now that was my darkest hours. wwwwwwwwwwww

@Haesslich: I guess Mami got ahead of herself. To be fair, Homura did warn her, but did she keep that in her head? Noooo~

  15. InvalidName Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 12:14 pm

(I only now noticed how the background of the second picture looks like blood splashing out of Mami’s neck… Interesting composition.)

Now, that was something. Well, at least Mami was happy during her final fight, and you might even say she just lived on borrowed time anyway. Still, poor girl. Or, seeing how this goes, maybe “poor girls” would be more appropriate. She really should’ve let Homura handle this. Now for some guesses about the future. I expect Sayaka to soon make a wish concerning that guy in the hospital, probably going for the “I want to fulfill his wish” angle, not the “I want to be the one who fulfilled his wish” angle, because she prefers to think of herself as “good”, which will of course result in an outcome that will be unfavourable to herself. Meanwhile, Madoka will make a wish to revive Mami, who will no longer be a magical girl after having died, and not able to form another contract, since possibly infinite wish loops are forbidden. Not being involved anymore, Mami will get mostly removed from the show. Afterwards, Madoka will start losing people who are really important to her and lament having become a magical girl and/or not having made a wish for a long and happy life for those dear to her.

Or I am completely wrong, and instead something bad happens.

  16. Haesslich Said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 12:24 pm

Is anyone else getting a “Ryuk from Death Note” vibe from Kyubei? I’m thinking the Witches are actually just regular Puella Magi, not necessarily ‘fallen’ ones – they’re only working for other contractor-types like Kyubei, who enjoy watching humans kill each other with magic provided by Kyubei and company. So these ‘Witches’ Mami killed may be normal girls she’s passed on the sidewalk… and in the background, Kyubei and his friends are laughing at the gullible humans.

Oh, and I’m waiting for Madoka’s younger brother to get killed messily along with her family, and she’ll have used up her wish on Mami or someone else – not realizing that the only way to ‘win’ is to get the fuck away from Kyubei and his friends.

    @ Kurogane Shiroikaze
Yeah. I don’t know but I also think that because Mami finally got friends, she started to let her guard down more and more which resulted in the event of this episode. Well, like some other people said, she at least really enjoyed the moment before her death. Hmm… it would also seem likely what Madoka wish would be especially after this episode. Her wish initially was simply, “I was to help everyone” but now her wish might actually be much stronger. But dang, I was to see more Mami…

  20. edru Said,

Austin Powers: Not the time to lose one’s head.
    Vanessa: No.
Austin Powers: That’s not the way to get ahead in life.
    Vanessa: No.
    Austin Powers: It’s a shame Mami wasn’t more…headstrong.
    Vanessa: Hmm.
Austin Powers: She’ll never be the head of a major corporation.

Completely expected, The situation where she has got time to make a choice, either to live or die. and then the exact same situation appears with the other two.. pretty suspect.

additionally, Mami was saying she wasn’t scared anymore, that she was happy that she wasn’t alone anymore kinda links in with Faust -> As the Devil takes the soul at the point his victim has reach the pinnacle of happiness.

I suspect a twist to appear, as usually happens when they so blatantly cast a character as being “evil”. QB will probably claim neutrality, and they’ll cast circumstance and situation as evil.

  26. Manabi Said,

    My thoughts were:

    1. A witch, and just about to hatch no less, appearing at the hospital where Sayaka’s friend is was way, waaaaaaaay suspicious. Just too damned convenient for my tastes. Personally I think Kyubei set it up. ヽ(o`皿′o)ノ

    2. The witch’s maze appeared to draw in aspects of what the girls were thinking, at least Sayaka and Mami. The medical themed stuff is pretty obvious, since Sayaka had just tried to visit her friend and was worried about him, but then Mami brought up cake, and there was all those pastries and stuff around, totally out of place against all the medical stuff. So does the witch’s maze reflect the minds of those inside it, or is there something else going on?

    3. Happiness is rather brutally withheld from Puella Magi. Mami was happy, and promptly gets offed in a rather horrific manner. Homura is obviously miserable as hell, and offs the witch without any apparent difficulty. Seems being happy is a real job hazard for Puella Magi.

    4. How does the size of the girl’s seed get determined? Kyubei seemed to imply it’s at least partially dependent on the girl’s power, but also on their wish. So perhaps a larger wish causes a decrease in seed size, and a corresponding decrease in magical powers? ( ̄~ ̄;)

    5. Kyubei’s starting to give me the creeps. (>o<)

  27. zomglazerpewpewpew Said,

Charlotte made a Mami’s brain pie. How sweet!
I wonder which puella magi will be the next to visit the bakery.

And BTW, it really caught my attention the part in which they insist about the importance of how the wish is formulated. I really started to wonder about that, might that mean that Mami will come back as a witch and start mindraping Madoka?

This episode has left me in despair!

No, seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of Hidamari Sketch, or what, but I’m depressed that Mami is gone ;_; I just keep thinking back and forth over the scene where she gets ravaged by Charlotte.

But yeah, Kyube is starting to look more and more like a creepy sexual predator. But what’s even worse, I can’t help but think about how grim the next week’s episode will be as the aftermath for this. Judging by the history though, Madoka and Sayaka might be dragged sooner into the abyss than expected. Next thursday can not come soon enough.

    Oh please, Mami-Miyako, be safe, it’s just a bad dream. ;_;

I didn’t know Nitroplus artists had a hand in this until just a while ago, and i heard something about a head…yes, I had spoilers. So I decided to watch it – first few episodes, kinda dark, but felt like just another magical shoujo this time with less moe…and then CHOMP.

Today, my mind was blown. And along with it, I found another favorite anime.

Also Kyubei seriously sounds like a damn villain to me now.

I’ll have to take a look at this magical girl show. I have not watched one since Magic Knight Rayearth, and El Hazard. Of course, they have yet to draw a magical girl that is as beautiful as Ifurita, the main villainess / romantic interest in El Hazard.

Notice how Kyubey didn’t even flinch when Mami got pwned up in the head and only started panicking just to tell the girls to form a contract. That guy is definitely evil in some perspective and by the end of the show he will by like “Take that, suckers!”.

  43. TRUE GAMER! Said,

In the episode 4 preview, I think the one who read the title was Mami’s voice actress, and the fact that the title has something to do with miracle makes me think that Mami is probably going to be revived next episode by Madoka’s wish when she forms a contract.

So I was reading the Wikipedia article for January 19 today (which would be January 20 in Japan, the day Episode 3 aired) and I came across this:

“1829 – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust Part 1 receives its premiere performance.”

    It could be a coincidence…

I watched episode 4 today, and Sayaka turned herself into a magical girl, wishing for Kamijou’s total recovery. Knowing that Gen Urobuchi is writing this, I think that wish is probably gonna backfire somehow and she is gonna die a horrible death.
