Puella Magi Madoka Magica 02

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Fuck yeah UNLIMITED RIFLE WORKS! God damn Mami is badass. Just when I thought episode 1 was amazing, episode 2 easily topped it.

So we finally get to know the details about the “system” regarding the Puella Magi and Witches:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

  • Puella Magi form contracts with Kyubey.
  • Only chosen ones are able to see Kyubey.
  • Contracted Puella Magi receive a Soul Gem.
  • The Soul Gem represents their wish and is the source of their magical powers.
  • The wish can be anything.
  • Owners of the Soul Gem are obligated to fight Witches.
  • Usage of magic will diminish the Soul Gem.
  • Soul Gems can be cleansed using Grief Seeds.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

And they look disturbing as fuck
  • If Puella Magi are born from hope (wishes), then Witches are born from curses (despair).
  • Witches target people with negative emotions and cause them harm.
  • Witches converge in areas that usually have traffic accidents, suicide spots, hospitals.
  • Witches constantly conceal themselves inside magical barriers (Shinbo-world). Normal people also cannot see Witches.
  • Defeated Witches occasionally drop Grief Seeds.

And the implications:

  • Puella Magi constantly have to hunt Witches to replenish and cleanse their Soul Gems. This results in competition between Puella Magi. Especially if there is a drop rate associated with the Grief Seeds from the Witches.
  • Puella Magi are trading their lives to fulfill their wishes. Fighting the Witches is apparently a very dangerous job.
  • Kyubey is contracted to at least multiple Puella Magi.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

I wonder how Mami balances that on her hands.

Which raises a few questions:

  • Why do the Soul Gems diminish when used?
  • Why can the Grief Seeds, dropped from Witches, able to “cleanse” and replenish the Soul Gems?
  • How do Witches come to exist?
  • When does the wish made by the Puella Magi come true?
  • Do the Puella Magi have to battle Witches all their lives?
  • What does Kyubey do if the Puella Magi ask for horrible things?
  • Why can Kyubey be harmed by another Puella Magi?
  • Are there other existences like Kyubey?
  • Why are the Puella Magi competing with each other for the Witches’ heads?

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Starting to sound very fishy already…

It’s actually quite a devious system when you think about it. Of course, not everything has been revealed so far, but relying the facts and implications arising from the information given to us so far, it does make me feel if there’s more than meets the eye with Kyubey and the whole Soul Gem system and while Mami seems benign enough, there’s been a few spots where she can show that she is quite dangerous to be trifled with (episode 1 ending). There’s also the Faust insert in this episode to think about as well. I don’t know if that’s a red herring or a hint to what might happen later on.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

In actually, Madoka’s future yuri partner?

Homerun Homura’s intentions are also sounding more and more like she is trying to prevent Madoka from falling in to some kind of trap more than her trying to do something that benefits herself as a Puella Magi. Not to mention her words to Madoka feel laced with some hindsight. That time loop/dream world theory is slowly starting to look very plausible…

Right. In any case, Madoka’s really giving us a good run for money with all these tantalizing teasing and hint-dropping. Hard to believe it’s gonna be another run-of-the-mill mahou shoujo series. I sincerely hope that the show doesn’t let us down in the end after whipping us viewers up in a frenzy like this. I haven’t been this anxious for a week to pass by as soon as possible.

In the mean time, I guess I will enjoy tea and cakes as much as I can.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

P.S. I need to stay away from /a/’s Madoka threads herp derp.

Seeing Kyubey, I’m reminded all of a sudden of Bokurano. Ugh. Grimdark, grimdark, GRIMDARK. Yes, I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop, and we learn the REAL truth behind the Witch hunts.

Ever since knowing that Miki is voiced by the seiyuu who did Angel Beat’s Yui, I just can’t shake that Yui connection out of my head. It was like every time that Miki spoke, I was expecting her to break into “Little Braver”, “Crow Song” or what’s not.

Yea, I expect Mami to fall into the dark side (think everyone noticed how the Grief Seed was actually removing the darkness from the Soul Gem…maybe if you didn’t defeat enough witches, you will find yourself becoming a fallen magi and converting into a witch?) , and Madoka and Miki to team up with Homura to open up a can of whoopass. Dual arrows+sword attack go!

This show really knows how to jerk you around.

everything is looking fairly happy and magical for most of the episode and then they manage to plant a seed of doubt and apprehension with the last sentence.

I would say that Mami is such a badass on that episode! Didn’t you mention that she summon her muskets via a magic skirk. just like Senjougahara?

Anyway, I’m looking forward for Madoka to befriend Homura… with FULL FORCE!

I have a feeling Mami’s basically going to be to Madoka and Miki what Hayate was at the end of A’s – the final boss, as it were. And she’s like a bustier, less air-headed Miyako. Which I fully approve of.

Waiting for more GRIMDARK to show up now. That, and more Mami time.

Hmm, maybe it’s just me, but did anyone else notice the German on the wall when they entered the building? From what I could see, I recognized it as a quote from Faust, the alchemist who sells his soul to the devil (see the end of the comment for more info_. I’m pretty sure Kyubei and Mami are more sinister than they appear, and here are my reasons, based solely on these two episodes.

    1) Homura showed up at the school to warn Madoka to not become a mage. Did anyone notice the setting there when Homura told Madoka to stay as herself? The two were on a bridge. mmm, symbolism.
    2) Homura was trying to kill Kyubei so he couldn’t give Madoka the offer
    3) Kyubei said he *wanted* to make a *contract* with the two girls. That means he was actively seeking them out, specifically Madoka. Also, notice the language he uses at the very end of episode one. He says “I *want* you to do something for me…”.
    4) Kyubei said he could grant one wish as his part of the contract. Sounds like a devil’s offer to me
    5) Mami’s gem didn’t become brighter due to a recharge, it became brighter because the darkness left it
    6) Mami’s apartment was poorly lit when she was describing everything, implying something is being hidden.
    7) Mami is trying to convince the two to sign the contract, hence the witch-hunt. But, she earlier states that a possible motivation for Hemura’s warning was to reduce competition. Something seems off here.
    8) The quote from Faust in the building where the two girls participate in the witch hunt implies that the contract they’ll likely sign won’t be a good thing.
    9) The preview for episode 3 states that “I act cool, but do nothing….”. that sounds a lot like Homura, which implies she’s trying to help Madoka, but isn’t to do so very well.

All of that makes me think we’re going to be in for a big plot-twist later that shows Kyubei and Mami aren’t as nice as they appear.

The German phrase is from Goethe’s Faust, chapter Studierzimmer II, line 1607 (I own a copy of the book, in German), which at this point in the Faust story, Faust has already sold his soul, and is hearing about the repercussions from the poodle\devil Mephistopheles and a choir of spirits. The quote is from the spirits, who warn Faust about the contract he just made.

I guess the greatest argument for a Downer Ending would be the fact that the scripwriter is Urobuchi “I love my weapons detailed, my monster in best lovecraftian style and, ah yes, I SUCK WRITING HAPPY ENDS” Gen.

Dude has some serious problems, if he thinks that Nasu Kinoko´s endings are happier than his!

On the other hand, by all this implications, I almost suspect, that Shinbo is gonna troll us!

    10) Neither Homura nor Nami appear to have friends or family. On the bridge Homura asked Madoka about this before giving her the warning.

The whole “I can grant any wish, the sky’s the limit” bit set off all kinds of warning bells to me. There’s _always_ a catch, and it’s kinda sad that neither Madoka or her friend (forget her name now) seemed to realize that. Kinda thinking Kyubey picked them because they’re innocent and clueless, and easily manipulated/tricked.
    ( ̄へ ̄)

Nami’s starting to seem really fishy too, what was up with her seemingly pretending to be in trouble, then quickly wiping the witch out. Given how easily she took it out afterward, I don’t think she was genuinely in trouble, so why the act?
    ( ̄~ ̄;)

@Benigmatica: Wasn’t just her skirt, she also took off her beret and dropped at least 5 guns out of it. Apparently she has portable black holes in all her clothing.

^ Well, while Mami does have some notable expression changes, I don’t think she fakes being in trouble. Being thrown around must have hurt. She only set her trap after shooting the ground.

Anyway, one important question that should also be asked is why are Grief Seeds dropped at all? Considering their use, the Puella Magi and witches seem to be part of the same thing…

Also, there someone needs to make an anime GIF of the guns dropping from Mami’s skirt…

  21. Benigmatica Said,

  22. edru Said,

as I said in another blog, its possible that mami is good and has nice intentions while kyubey probably not.

mami believes she’s doing the right thing and maybe she is doing the right thing, killing witches who cause despair and saves people. she is willing to risk her life to do it. and she doesnt suspect kyubey or at least believes him like what madoka and sayaka.

homura however has seen the dangers, problem and maybe even a dark part of being a mahou shoujo so she’s trying to stop girls from being one of them or to spare them the pain. she knows that kyubey is not what he seems.

Hrm. I get the feeling this isn’t the first time we’re going to be dicked around like this. Not like it’s the first series that pretends everything’s sunshine and rainbows and unicorn farts and then does some small thing towards the very end to make you think it might not really be all that pleasant. It probably is a trap, but simultaneously one that will ensure we’ll keep watching lol

  24. Dude Said,

    January 16, 2011 @ 11:11 pm

Let me call it. Witches are ex-Puella Magi, their Soul Gems become become Grief Seeds.

This is why Soul Gems recharge and why Witches are being hunted down. Puella Magi do the grunt work, Kyuubey gets the Witches eliminated.

@Dude: Hm I have the same theory.

  26. Mentar Said,

Dollars to donuts that Witches with Grief Seeds are actually fallen Magical Girls. Kyubey is a con artist trying to tempt/lure Madoka and Sayaka into this scheme, and Mami is one “player” in this system who has something to gain if she manages to get Madoka/Sayaka to participate. 20 dollars to 10 say that Mami KNOWS what “Witches” are, yet she doesn’t say a word for reasons I expect to turn out to be purely selfish. All the while, Homura is suffering under this scheme, tries to keep Madoka/Sayaka from making a mistake, but she’s not going to succeed.

Those who don’t know it – read up on some classic literature, folks. “Faust” from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Wikipedia is your friend. The multiple references are extremely foreboding.

  27. Manabi Said,

@The Japan Girl: Actually even the first episode had hints that things weren’t all happy and fun. That dream Madoka had about Homura at the very beginning for example, and the whole episode where they encountered Homura then Mami rescuing them at the end as well.

The look on Homura’s face is almost heartbreaking when she realizes that Madoka might actually be entertaining the idea of entering into the contract with Kyubey. It’s good to read these responses and get affirmation that it “wasn’t just me” thinking things were fishy.
