Oh Shinbo, putting fanservice in the OP.

Madoka’s mom is very awesome and motherly. Also, she SPARKLES.

Meet Senjougahara Fate Homura, also known as “Akemi”.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Oh man, Shinbo’s Reality Marble creations are really one of a kind. I EXPECTED NOTHING LESS. And it’s apparently themed… or called 「劇団イヌカレー」(Gekidan inukare). I don’t know what to make of it. Apparently Gekidan Inu Curry is an animation team that also did Bakemono’s ED. Sorry if I wasn’t otaku enough to memorize every animator’s name nowadays, please accept my sincere apologies, oh otaku Ph.D Barry Sanders.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Fuck yeah, Mami appears! Too bad futaba didn’t cap her UNLIMITED REVOLVER WORKS part, that shit was epic. Especially with the Yuki Kajiura accompaniment.

  • If you didn’t like episode 1 of Nanoha, chances are you will find episode of Madoka similarly boring until the last 4 minutes of the episode.
  • This was way more traditional than I thought, but the last four minutes definitely deserves attention.
  • Chiwa Saitou sure is channeling Senjougahara way hard as Akemi.
  • I don’t know why, but KitaEri’s character, Miki, is already my favourite.
  • Kajiura sure went all out with the music in this episode. If you ever wondered how Nanoha would’ve sounded like with Kajiura doing OST, then you’ve got it in Madoka. Oh hell, even walking down a hallway sounded epic with her BGM playing the background.
  • Speaking of background, this episode was relatively light in any form of explanation about the general objectives (enemies, magic, etc. etc.).
  • Ah, but there was that last part where Kyubei says it can grant any wish of the girls if they help it out.
  • OP is very cute. How can you say no to fanservice Madoka (AFRO MODE LAWL) and symmetrical self-docking?!
  • No ED yet, sadly, but the first track in the episode is apparently the ED.

Overall, it’s nothing super outstanding for a first episode, but I like it when they start slow and introduce us slowly to the characters.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, the episode parallels quite a bit with the first episode of Nanoha (and probably most other mahou shoujo shows), but the last four minutes really made for some great talking points and shows off Shinbo and the rest of the crew’s uniqueness.

One thing I am worried about is the lack of any explanations regarding the magical systems, the enemies, Akemi’s “dark side” and etc. I do hope they actually have the setting designs all well planned out. I guess we will see next week if they actually make any sense. Overall, quite promising for now.

Also, the end card is very very pretty.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

I.S and Yumekui Merry probably tomorrow. Not like they’re any good so far I’ve seen.

@Xellos-_^> so is this sort of if Nanoha was Shaft by Shinbo?

Well, the original Nanoha was directed by Shinbo (though I guess the production company was Seven Arcs).

Gekidan Inu Curry (Ayumi Shiraishi and Yousuke Anai) is the animation team which did the battle/transformation scene, you moron. This is why anime blogging is such a joke. No one bothers to research nor fact check. Ever.

That was not exactly good, but perhaps with more background next week we could have something going here.

Do we really need anything reminiscent of Senjougahara? Ugh. But yes, that’s exactly the vibe she gives off.

THE CHARACTER DESIGN! I KNOW IT! Damn, who was the artist again!?

    WHAT? Ume Aoki?

  10. metalsnakezero Said,

    January 7, 2011 @ 11:09 am

Yes, it is Ume Aoki. So far no wide faces at the moment.

And yes Anise_Punter, we could always have another reminiscent of Senjougahara. It should only stop when we have a army of them.

is there something wrong with senjougahara?
I’ve only watched ep 2 for fanservice reasons and not planning to watch the rest until I finish StrikerS and niju menso.

What Barry Sanders (albeit rudely) said. Gekidan Inu Curry are the ones that made the world transformation sequence. You’d also know them as the animation crew behind the Bakemonogatari EDs. :P

I have to say I laughed at that comment.

@Barry Sanders: Corrected. Well, one more new thing I’ve learned today!

The Nanoha parallels makes sense if you remember that Shinbo directed the first season of Nanoha

Nanoha in 2010 with Shinbo Ayuki and Yuki Kajiura. The animation is off the charts again, something which is usually a hit or miss (hit for bakemonogatari, miss for Dance in the Vampire Bund) and its a complete hit this time. Ayuki’s just so daring with his animation and Im really loving it here. The creator of Tsubasa’s epic bgm doing this… FFFFFFFFFFF YEAH!. The dream sequence in the beginning and the last 4 minutes was just pure epic glory with her doing the music. The downside’s the story but even Nanoha picked up to be really awesome after a few episodes… I just can’t w8 to see how epic this’ll get.

For once I’m not thinking of dropping a magical girl anime. Oh wells, I’ll see how it turns out.

The seiyuu cast for this anime’s freakin’ awesome. :D

  23. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 8, 2011 @ 1:17 am

@Dakkar: Yeah, it’s actually a mixture of both so UNLIMITED GUN WORKS would’ve been more proper I guess.

  24. Dakkar Said,

    January 8, 2011 @ 2:33 am

Well, it’s hard to tell whether they are short rifles or extremely long pistols (who knows, it’s Shinbo we’re talking about, his magical girls might prefer bigger ones), but they kind of emphasized the flintlock part, so how about abbreviating it to UFW? :D
