A lookback at 2010’s highlights

Happy New Year 2011

Second installment. Continued from yesterday.

Male Character of the Year: Kasugano Haruka, Yosuga no Sora

Yosuga no Sora

You honestly think anyone else would do? This is a guy who has to finish what he started.

Other candidates:
Hino Akiharu, Ladies vs Butlers
Sai Akuto, Ichiban Ushiro Daimaou
Kohta Hirano, Highschool of the Dead

Female Character of the Year: None

Frankly, I don’t think there was any female characters this year that was quite outstanding enough to win this award.

Trap of the Year: Meh, fuck this.

Zettai Ryouiki of the Year: Serizawa Fumino, Mayoi Neko Overrun

Mayoi Neko Overrun

Seriously, I could watch those for hours. Too bad they got entirely forgotten after that.

Senpai of the Year: Morishima HarukaAARRRGHHH, Amagami SS

Amagami SS

Nyan nyan.

Yandere/Onee-san of the Year: Yasuri Nanami, Katanagatari

Katanagatari 04

I really pitied the three ninja dudes.

Imouto of the Year: Tachibana Miya, Amagami SS

Amagami SS

In a year full of imouto-moe shit (including Yosuga), she remains the only imouto to truly embody the ideal imouto (that I don’t feel like fucking). Honest.

Twins of the Year: Tortilla Ritos & Salsa, Shukufuku no Campanella

Shukufuku no Campanella

The show wouldn’t have bee half as entertaining as it was if they weren’t around.

Queen Bitch of the Year: Saikyou Tomomi, Ladies vs Butlers

Ladies vs Butlers

Honestly, who else? Ayako Kawasumi was amazing with her.

The “Even though the show was shit, this episode made me cry” Award: Episode 10 of Angel Beats!

Angel Beats!

Yui ;_;

The “Oh fuck, shit suddenly turned serious” Award: Mafia no Woto

I certainly did.

LOVE X HEAVEN, Ladies vs Butlers

Magical Twinkle Sky, Mahou Shoujo Yue Negima! OAD

Hikari no Senritsu, So-Ra-No-Wo-To

Complication, Durarara!!

Help!! -Hell side-, MM!

Now loading… SKY!!, Asobi ni Ikuyo!

REALOVE;REALIFE, Ichiban Ushiro Daimaou

Kimi no Mama de, Amagami SS

Memorable ED themes:

Kigurumi Wakusei, Hanamaru Kindergarten

Kimi no Kirei ni Kizuite Okure, Kuragehime

Brave Song, Angel Beats!

Memorable Seiyuu Performances:

Kana Hanazawa

This year is truly her year. Not only did she got multiple roles each season, she also did quite a lot of OVA’s and movies as well, so there was no shortage of my enjoyment of her voice this year. Some of her standout roles this year for me were Amano Touko (Bungaku Shoujo), Kurashita Tsukimi (Kuragehime), Sonohara Anri (Durarara!!) and of course, Kuroneko (Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii wake ga nai).

Yuuki Aoi

Despite a limited repertoire, Yuuki Aoi sure has a really moe voice that she can skillfully handle for maximum HNNNNGGGH as well as enough range to be versatile enough to be pigeonholed in a certain role. Her most standout role this year to me was Korone (Ichiban Ushirou Daimaou), but maximum HNNNGGGH was achieved as Yagyuu Jubei (Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls). Next year looks set to be her year as well, with two main voicing roles already confirmed for next season.

Itou Shizuka

Morishima Haruka, ’nuff said.

Toyosaki Aki

She’s been slowly discarding that “airhead” character type her voice seems to fit the most and gave some really great performances at the later half of this year, such as Momo Belia Deviluke (Motto To-LOVE-ru), Chaos (Sora no Otoshimono Forte) and Bonbori (Otome Youkai Zakuro). Still, she does manage to be really annoying when she tries, like as Hyakka Ryouran’s Kanetsugu Naoe

Satomi Arai

She’s been slowly getting roles back after that craziness of Kuroko in Railgun and this year we’ve been hearing her quite a lot. Aside from Kuroko, her turn as the narrator in Ookami was about the only thing that kept me from dropping that show like a rock. And her turn as Hata in Seitokai was pretty hillarious as well. While not a lot of people will like her husky voice, I’m still a fan of her because of how she manages to use her voice for maximum hillarity.

Tomatsu Haruka

I can’t say she’s been really active this year, but she’s on this list for one reason, Princess Hitei (Katanagatari). And she’s also had a prominent role as Sakana-chan (STAR DRIVER), not to mention contributing to a pretty popular insert song as well.

Well, that wraps up my highlights of this year.

This is mostly from anime actually, because if I included other media, I’m not gonna finish any time soon.

My hopes for next year:

  • Stop with the imouto-moe shit
  • Magica Madoka to be actually decent.
  • More original anime titles
  • Less shitty adaptations
  • Enough time to watch shit since I’m going to be a working member of society already.

That’s all.

Movie of the Year Decade: TTGL: Lagann-hen.

    Nothing beats this:

What, no Trap of the year!?

  3. DmonHiro Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 3:19 am

TTGR Movie was shit. Stupid ending with everyone getting a TTGL, only 2 deaths, even though the other ones were memorable and heroic, and same stupid ending. The fist fight was lame as hell. If you discard your body, YOU DON’T BLEED.

  4. alex Said,

    Trap of the Year: Taro
Female Character of the Year: Ika

  5. Athos Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 3:53 am

Lagann-hen embodied and honored what TTGL was good for– and that was not plot. Normally a couple memorable fight sequences would never make up for 70% recycled material, but you can’t rationalize hype sometimes.

Disappearance tops it in both hype and delivery, though.

Stuff I’m looking forward to next year…

-Negima OVA reaching Negi vs Rakkan volume
    -Kara no Kyoukai epilogue
    -Berserk anime

Also, the fall of japanese industry as we know it. Should be fun.

  6. bluemonq Said,

Neither Togame nor Tsukimi was outstanding enough to net Female Character of the Year? Harrumph.

  7. Silver Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 5:16 am

Dang, I also wished for better fantasy adaptations. Personally, Chrome Shelled Regios and The Legend of the Legendary Heroes could have been a lot better but it seems that director is out to destroy good series. “Stop with the imouto-moe shit” Hahahaha yeah we need less of those. “Itou Shizuka” Heck yeah as Morishima Haruka (and not related to 2010 but Hina). Also, DAMN IT someone should make an anime of the manwa Id instead of Freezing or Kurokami.

  8. Haesslich Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 5:35 am

metal: I don’t think Kotori-chan counts, given he was less ‘trap’ and more ‘crossdressing’ without even trying to be a girl… except when Inami’s father was around. And then he became Motoko Kusanagi, who can outmacho even Batou.

Also, the Tortilla Sisters were like the only twins this year who were identical and not engaged in each other.

  9. Kaisos Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 6:59 am

No “Tomokazu Sugita” under “Memorable Seiyuu Performances”? Bah.

  11. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

@bluemonq: Nope. Not for me at least.

    @Haesslich: Hurr, yeah, indeed.

@Kaisos: I don’t actually… remember much of the male seiyuu performances. But OK, Tomokazu was great as Kyon in the movie.

@dark-kyon: Too many to count, so I stopped before I burst open several more nutbladders.

  12. Azure Said,

Magical Twinkle Sky? Not the ED Good Vibration? I thought the song name itself would be memorable enough, lol.

    Nice one…
But why there is no HHNNNNGGG of the year?

  14. AozuAkazu Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 4:03 pm

Oh, your blog is working again. I think it was deathing this morning.

I got really used to Kana Hanazawa’s voice this year and am quickly becoming a fan. She’s done so many roles and has done quite a good job with all of them.

I agree with your hopes for the new year, especially the last two (except instead of working I have to finish possibly the two most important years of my life in school).

Also, I loved the Zettai Ryouiki so much, but after that we only got spats and other lame shit orz

  15. K_S_ Said,

    January 2, 2011 @ 4:47 pm

    @Male Seiyuus: How about:
    -Kamiya Hiroshi (Drrr, Working, AB!…)
-Ono Daisuke (Drrr, Working, DenYuuDen, Suzumiya-Movie…)
-Nakamura Yuuichi (Drrr, OreImo, Fairy Tail, Break Blade…)

Besides this: I personally would like to mention Yutori-chan for most innovative idea of “new sensation of anime”, but it might as well be cosidered as a new idea of money making orz

Don’t feel like posting in the other topic, so I’m posting it here:
Animes I’d like to mention as well:
    -King of Thorn Movie
    -Tamayura OVA
    -Megane no Kanojo OVA

And the “.hack//Quantum” Movies are bound to be good as well. But we’ll see that in a month for ourselves^^

Ayana Taketatsu received a load of roles this season and branched off from her notable cat roles, i.e. Nozomi and Azusa.
    Does she deserve a mention?

  23. J3N0V4 Said,

    January 3, 2011 @ 2:36 pm

I was a bit disappointed that Akuto didn’t come out on top but then again he wasn’t as on top as much as Haruka.

also no insert of the year? that would have been interesting with one or two moments coming to mind

  24. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 3, 2011 @ 3:21 pm

Oh dear god, J3N0V4, your comment is quite utter win I just had to login to my blog from work to say that to you. Coincidentally, your comment is also the 26,000th comment on my blog, LAWL.

    @anose: ^what Aozu said.

@Daniel: Sure, she’s got a few prominent roles, but her voice work hasn’t quite caught my ears yet in terms of outstanding acting. Still, I will admit she is a very decent voice actress otherwise.

Besides, the list above is mainly what seiyuu performances I thought was outstanding enough that it outshone everything else not based on how ‘popular’ the seiyuu was last year.

And nope, I don’t even want to start thinking about insert songs. It’s not like I watched K-ON!! after episode 4.

@Anise_Punter: Sure, for most annoying OP of the Year perhaps? I can’t fucking stand people looping the damn OP 10 times a day already.

Hmm.. coming to think of it, that’s probably why I didn’t put the OP in my list.

  25. Dude Said,

Dude…where’s Tomokazu Sugita and Chihara Minori?

  26. yanipheonu Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 3:41 am

I personally put my opinion in for less movies, more new series. Yes, it’s cool to see some high production value stuff, and between the Haruhi, Macross Frontier, Gurren Lagann and Gundam 00 movies we’ve seen some sweet stuff, but I want to see actual series again…

Not to mention subs for movies are oddly poorly announced.

  27. Athos Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 12:05 pm

So… well… having read a bunchload of “Best of 2010″s, I really can’t help but turning back here. I honestly regret not coming across this place sooner, and hearing that Kurogane will have less time to blog only makes me feel worse.

…then again, the anime industry will collapse in a few months, so it’s all good!

  28. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 12:12 pm

    Well, there’s always Twitter.

  29. Anise_Punter Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 2:35 pm

I don’t recall mentioning any OPs, I just mentioned Ika-musume. Random Curiosity agreed with me for like the first time ever wrt Ika-musume being the Ika of the year.

If you meant Ika Musume’s OP, yeah, that was pretty god-awful, I just skipped it. But who cares about that when there are mini Ikas afoot?

  30. thatredsky Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 8:24 pm

They were in prominent roles this year? Apart from Disappearance…I can’t really remember any other roles.

Tomatsu Haruka was in Motto To Love-Ru, I kinda liked Lala’s voice. Toyosaki Aki’s more win, though. :DDDD

  31. K_S_ Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 9:03 pm

Sugita Tomokazu was also in Arakawa and DenYuuDen, I personally liked the latter role quite a bit, but still, I don’t think it was anything special.

Chihara Minori was in Chuu-Bra as Kurogane already said, and also in Occult Gakuin. In YumePati S2 she voiced Maize, one of the little spirits, but these are all minor roles or from less popular anime…

  32. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 9:14 pm

    >where’s Tomokazu Sugita and Chihara Minori?

Sugita was good as Kyon, but it’s nothing outstanding compared to his earlier performances in the TV series.

And just because Chihara Minori voices a popular character, it doesn’t make her an outstanding seiyuu by any reach.

  33. thatredsky Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 11:28 pm

I see, I never really watched Arakawa or DenYuuDen.

It seems like all the entries in the “Memorable Seiyuu Performances” are females, eh? :/

  34. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 4, 2011 @ 11:36 pm

    Yeah, well.

    I am biased like that.

  35. sage Said,

  36. thatredsky Said,

Kurogane, what about Misato Fukuen? Her role as Yami-chan in To Love-Ru was pretty well done, no?

  37. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    January 5, 2011 @ 1:42 am

I never really did like Misato Fukuen’s performances or voice much. So yeah.
