ANN and fansubs

This is just too good to pass up:

Yeah… okay, sure…

Excuse me while I appreciate the irony sarcasm joke whatever this is.

This is why I don’t go to ANN forums. Last time I went there, my head exploded and not in a good way.

A.N.N.: A whole load of good articles and reference, a whole load of bullcrap in the forums, just like Robotech’s forums.

Every time I enter the forums and read it, I have to apply 4chan level of ignorance towards nearly everyone in there, save a few. Suffice to say, what was posted up there is just plain LOL.

Just waiting for Zac to mess this shit up even further.

I have an official position on Divorce and an official position on not promoting it. That does not, however mean that I have not divorced once (or twice, or thrice, or maybe a bit more than that). The two are entirely separate so there is no hypocrisy.

Oh, and try to put some substance in you posts in the future. Blatant trolling won;t be tolerated in my kingdom.

What ANN leak are they talking about?

  6. bluemist Said,

Why do we keep pounding on ANN or whatever? I go to ANN for NEWS, and their useful encyclopedia. Everything else from them is either noise, or for the occasional lulz.

  7. ahelo Said,

I checked on it again… I SHOULD REALLY STOP READING THESE FORUMS. Most of them are so– URRGH!

Check out the comments when Onemanga was shut down in ANN. Arrgh that was the last time I checked the forums until today.

Im still raging over the mindfuck ANN people have.

It’s not that much difference to people reading/replying/posting on other forums beside people choose to censor out anything that don’t like to read. Is fansub hurting the industry… in some way yes, but do people choose to ignore it so they can get their free anime? thats a yes for some people too.

Either way I don’t see the irony… the industry has a lot of problem both in japan and america. Fansub is a mean for some people use to watch anime which is also a contributing factor.

To quote someone’s comment I once saw in my travels on the Internet:
“ANN is the second worst anime website on the web, the first being Sankaku Complex.”

  11. Avisch Said,

    October 19, 2010 @ 11:14 pm

I think we all admit that their encyclopedia and news are fine.

But their articles run criticism of anime towards ridiculous manners, the best example for me is one article pointing out that Tytania was “too much of a space opera.” Sure the show had it’s awful moments, but that is completely missing the point. Or saying that Kannagi by episode two wasn’t good because it wasn’t fleshing out it’s characters.

I think it’s easy to summarize ANN’s fansubing stance as whiteknighting, and to be fair I also had those whiteknight stances towards fansubs (when I wasn’t watching them)…..WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD.

ANN..I’ve barely had any contact with their forums and now I’m glad I don’t. I’ve dealt with less than agreeable forumgoers/moderators before and I don’t want to go back to that.

Though…scanning a tiny bit of that thread before class — A later response though said something about them using fansubs for the preview guide because that’s what everyone else in the whole damn world is using and they want to keep everything relevant to their audience by keeping up with everything that’s airing. That’d be fine and all if it didn’t mean that they’d bend their own rule (that they’ll chew up everyone else for breaking) just to get more internet cookie points with whatever readers they actually have.

Though I probably have no position to talk back to them since, as a scanlator and fansubber, I’m probably considered the scum of the earth by the ANN folk…unless they use scanlations unofficially too?

  16. Psycho Said,

I just visit ANN for their encyclopedia. Forum, meh. Animesuki is much better.

  17. YotaruVegeta Said,

    October 20, 2010 @ 7:54 am

I guess I’m in the minority here. I don’t see any big difference between ANN and any other site with a forum. It’s where idiots and intelligent people go to argue and babble.

As for that specific comment, what’s the problem? What I got from it is that ANN is a site that does not openly promote fansubbing. Why would they, since they legally stream anime? However, what individual members of the ANN staff watch is their own business.

  18. Skribulous Said,

    October 20, 2010 @ 7:55 am

This is pretty much old news. Since when was ANN a credible bastion of integrity anyway?

Encyclopedia, maybe. But news? Heck no. There’s other places online that are better sources.

  19. Locien Said,

    October 20, 2010 @ 10:58 am

Yeah, I refuse to visit their site anymore because I loath their editorial position; even if it’s the first thing when I’m looking for some information, I go past those links and look elsewhere.

  20. KaGAmi Said,

    October 20, 2010 @ 2:17 pm

I pretty much stopped going to ANN when they gave Shin-Chan a F in art.

Why the fuck is art and animation separate grades anyway other then that they are elitist fags?

  21. ~xxx Said,

sometimes it really puts me in doubt on some of it’s posts…

well, I search for it in few cases that wiki can’t provide me an answer…

  22. Westlo Said,

Personally I liked how you’re not aloud to say anime-suki on the forums and than they did an entire article linking to that site.

  23. Mappy Said,

    October 20, 2010 @ 8:13 pm

Most of those who work at ANN seem to have a whole range of personal issues that make most of their features, articles and reviews almost unreadable for the RAAAAGE they induce.

And then you go to the forums, and forgive the staff for (almost) all of their sins.

  24. skyhack Said,

    October 21, 2010 @ 2:24 am

I think Key’s reply is better if you submit a different word for the word “fansubs” and run with it.

It makes it seem even more ludicrous.

Try “journalistic integrity”, for example, or something more jarring, like “baping rabies”.

The hypocrisy comes across a little better, now.

Besides, WTH constitutes a “blatant” troll? If Cake Eater is stating a fact (which Key admits), why does the use of the word “hypocrites” make it a troll?

  25. Hate Said,

    October 21, 2010 @ 11:08 am

I hate forums in general because I hate the people in them.ANN is an okay site to get some news, but the people in their forums represent a very tiny slice of the fans who probably don’t have anywhere else to go due to their less than pleasant nature and homosexual tendencies.Well,I made that last part up but my gaydar keeps telling me that its true.

In short, just ignore them.Everybody is happier that way.

  26. YotaruVegeta Said,

    October 21, 2010 @ 11:55 am

Mappy, how would you know that the staff of ANN has issues unless they told you, and even if they do have issues, so what? The features are mostly opinion pieces. When it comes to opinion, you can say what you want

kagami, are you under the impression that the art of Shin-chan could never possibly be hated? Art is subjective. There are classic works of art that have survived decades, but people HATE them. Again, opinion.

I don’t get the hate for ANN, as if the reviews of individual staff represent the opinion of the site as a whole. If you read all the reviews on the site, you can most likely find the reviewer who likes what you like.

  27. YotaruVegeta Said,

    October 21, 2010 @ 12:09 pm

BTW, ANN has a policy of banning people if they call out other forum members and other such flame war inciting catalysts. It keeps people in line, I guess.

I don’t see the hypocrisy in ANN saying “we don’t support fansubs, but our people can if they want” It’s like any company. They’re not in charge of every action, just what gets written on the site.

It’s like the Catholic Church. they’re definitely not saying “hey, priests, go have fun with those altar boys,” but a few priests have done so anyhow.

  28. zzz Said,

    October 22, 2010 @ 12:34 am

You guys are fuckin’ dense. Read between the lines of Key’s post. The poor guy is getting bashed for having faith in peoples’ intelligence.

  29. Mappy Said,

    October 22, 2010 @ 12:55 pm

YotaruVegeta: I read the opinion pieces. I read their reviews. They have issues. And not just of the psychological kind. But their forums are appalling pits of development-stunted shite. So everyone is in their place. This is anime. You wouldn’t like it if you weren’t shriveling up inside with more complexes than were capable of being diagnosed.

“It’s like the Catholic Church. they’re definitely not saying “hey, priests, go have fun with those altar boys,” but a few priests have done so anyhow.”

Unfortunately, someone has already shown how any metaphor can be shoehorned into things people say when said statement is open for such abuse (as Key’s statement was) in jest. You took the concept and ran with it seriously.

  30. YotaruVegeta Said,

    October 23, 2010 @ 11:58 am

What are these “issues” and what does it have to do with the quality of the writing on ANN?

Again, I’ve been on many forums besides ANN, and I do not think I could call it something that stands out when compared to other boards. Something like 4chan does, but not even for being idiotic, but for being so vile.

There are idiots, the ignorant and uninformed on ANN, but I just imagine that these are young people.

  31. avery Said,

    October 29, 2010 @ 8:45 pm

vegeta, it sounds like you’re being infected with ANN disease. get out while you still can.

  32. YotaruVegeta Said,

    October 30, 2010 @ 11:05 am

I don’t really frequent the ANN forums. I’ve been turned off to any heavy forum activity for a few years now. Plus there’s twitter, where anything I deem noise is BLOCKED.

  33. minakomel Said,

    December 8, 2010 @ 7:26 pm

if you use fansubs “not-officialy”, you still use them. ANN people ARE a bunch of hypocrites (or just read their coments on Nanoha. They hate loli so they refused to promote it…yet, they watch it)

  34. YotaruVegeta Said,

    December 10, 2010 @ 12:26 am

They aren’t hypocrites. As a company, ANN does not support fansubs. The individual employees are free to do as you wish, just as any employee of any company is free to do whatever illegal activity they want outside of the office.
