Capitalism is addictive

No, I’m not dead yet.

I’m just busy helping a little girl from having to live with only two internal organs by selling overpriced wooden bows to pensioners (it’s the “in” thing right now!), candies to little girls, swords and armor to budding adventurers and recipe ingredients to housewives.

No, I’m pretty sure you’ll be dead with only two organs, Recette.

It’s seriously addictive and Recettear is worth all the 20 USD I paid for it from Steam. Capitalism, ho!

Of course, if you’re in to socialism, it’s okay to do so, but if you really like this game, and maybe hope to see more like this, SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY! Or wait till the Steam weekend promotions, which I’ll certainly highlight here.

Regular blogging will probably resume in another week or so. Hopefully.

P.S. Euria needs to fucking die. That Combo-breaking bitch.

@Xellos: Impulse and GamersGate are completely DRM-free without limited activations. You can download the game once, then freely copy and move it from computer to computer with restrictions. The company that released the game even wrote about how they think DRM is stupid, so they’re very pro-free gaming.

  4. jobias Said,

I’ve heard that it’s available on Impulse, which is DRM-free. It may also be on GamersGate but I haven’t checked myself.

GamersGate usually isn’t too unlike a traditional PC install. When you buy they give you a downloader application and when you run that it downloads, unpacks and runs an installer. Usually after you install it asks if you want to leave the downloaded files behind. Say yes and in the folder you’ll find a standard PC installer EXE that you can burn to a CD or whatever. I’ve never had any trouble re-installing GamersGate downloads and haven’t even needed to be online to install.

I didn’t buy Recettear from them though so I can’t say 100% this is how it works for this game.

If you game isn’t from Steam, you probably didn’t patch your game up to 1.106v. All of Steam’s games get auto patched, but if it isn’t from Steam, you’ll have to manually download the patch yourself from the official website. I heard the patch makes the dungeon crawling portion easier.

If you have the patch, then I’m not looking forward to playing Crystal of Nightmare.

  13. DKellis Said,

    September 15, 2010 @ 10:14 am

Also, to those wondering, apart from Steam, you can install the game, and then copy the entire game directory to wherever you want and it will still run fine.

I think (never used them before) GamersGate requires you to be online to download (duh), and then you never need to bother them again.

Impulse requires you to download and install the client, which you then use to download the game, and then you can uninstall the Impulse client if you want.

None of the services (including Steam) add DRM. There’s also no limited activation for Recettear, and you can install as many times and places as you want.

  14. DKellis Said,

    September 15, 2010 @ 10:16 am

The patch balances enemies (among other things) to make the earlier dungeons easier and the later dungeons harder. (Most enemies do more damage now, but slimes and ropers do less.)

I think Crystal Nightmare is a later dungeon, so it’s going to get harder than pre-patch.

Only Steam version has some DRM, you can’t launch the game without the client running. Not a biggie if you’re already a Steam user.

Of course, GamersGate and Impulse are also perfectly good places to get the game from, but I highlighted Steam because I’m already using it myself. Hell, I was surprised it actually got sold there. Even funnier was that it happened in less than a few hours after I had a conversation with a friend who said the company would have to “suck Gabe’s dick” in order to get put on Steam. Ironic, eh?

But frankly, a little DRM isn’t a big put-off. Putting the game on Steam has been a great move on their part mostly because of the bigger pre-installed user base as well as tie-ups with gaming media. Heck, this even got featured on Kotaku after launch (okay granted a lot of shit gets easily featured on Kotaku anyway…).

Hopefully, this will push for better exposure of great indie games from Japan. I’m already thinking of getting the older EGS games to try out. Heard their latest project is a strategy-RPG mash-up. I wouldn’t mind trying it out if Carpe Fulgur gets the rights for that one as well.

Or even better, a Recettear expansion/sequel.

    Thunderca…. I mean, CAPITALISM, HO!

  17. Pw3age Said,

All I know is that slimes and ropers were doing insane amounts of damage before, are now doing reasonable amounts of damage (which was the only monsters which actually killed you, others are still weak). What they really need is to remove the goddamn loli and fairy.

  18. Jobrill Said,

    September 15, 2010 @ 11:44 am

    Hah, this game is fun.

…And now I sort of want an Anime.

  19. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    September 15, 2010 @ 12:02 pm

@Pw3age: I lost count the number of times I got my ass handed to me by the damn ropers and the occasional slime in the demo. Now, the patch makes early dungeoneering a lot more easier for the new player.

I’ll admit, the high damage and danger really made me learn how to quickly avoid the monster attacks and tactics on killing them without dying very quickly at first. Now it’s all EASY MOODO~. Great for the new players, but kinda boring for the demo veterans now.

And removing the loli and fairy wouldn’t make the game any funner, they are there to throw spanners in to your works for a good reason ;).

@Jobrill: … and the anime would suck terribly since it will most likely focus on the adventure aspects. It would be weird to make an anime where all that happens is a girl serving customers demanding/selling random items.

    I want my treasures back.

  27. updatedude Said,

Y’know, an anime COULD work. IF they go the route of EPIC item selling. I mean, we have epic mahjong and epic bread making, so it’s not something impossible to do.

Anyway, I was already aware of the little girl, so I was ready for her cheapness. Prime’s kinda annoying, but I figured that since he’s also a retail guy, he knows the price of things. I guess the guild merchant guy gets no employee discount?

But yes, darn Euria, wasting mah time all the time.

The events could have been better spaced out though. Shortly after finally beating the main game, I don’t seem to be getting anymore events. Right now, I’m still climbing the Obsidian Tower or whatever it’s called, so I figure I’ll end up befriending the final boss and getting a few more events from that. But otherwise, looks like events have run dry already.

Also, yeah, Ropers… so who’s Fatina? Charme doesn’t quite match up perfectly. And if Tear is Koopa, does that mean Recette is Melt?
