Angel Beats! 08

…. they just bloody rehashed the Guild episode this week. And I was expecting something more interesting as the explanation for the multiple Tenshi’s.

Angel Beats!

Admittedly the Red Tenshi’s had a kick-ass attitude, literally. I wonder why Kanade programmed that skill to be so offensive… not to mention uncontrollable as well.

Angel Beats!

a meganekko Yurippe is fine too

Still laughing at how there is an instruction manual (in English too!) for Tenshi’s Angel Player software. I guess Tenshi wasn’t a Starcraft pro player, but a UMS designer instead. Not going to ask how Yurippe managed to edit the skills here and how did she figure out to chain them together using a timer skill.

Angel Beats!

It pains me to admit but I’d like to see that

Yui proved to be exceptionally entertaining this week, at the cost of her character’s future reputation. I can already foresee the boatloads of omorashi doujins in this year’s Summer Comiket focusing on her. With any luck, there will hopefully be a few good ones that incorporate the live performances too.

Angel Beats!

And Yurippe’s starting to exhibit a little yandere tendencies as well….

And damn the cliffhanger ending this week again, 3 episodes in a row innit? Hopefully Kanade will be alright. If you ask me, only one clone was actually badly injured by Yurippe, so I don’t know how Kanade will be psychologically damaged by it. Also, it’s not like everyone else can die *shrug*

Maybe they’ll all fuse the aggressiveness and then Tenshi will turn from deadpan to badass deadpan again!

Yuri finally gets to beat Tenshi in a battle. It is funny to see how most of the SSS members tried to hug Tenshi..

If there’s anything I notice about cliffhangers in this series, its that the following episode makes them end very anti-climatically.

Cliffhanger from ep5 – Naoi takes them to reflection room – following episode, they just literally walk out of the detention
Cliffhanger from ep6 – Naoi breaks down about his past – following episode, Naoi joins SSS
Cliffhanger from ep7 – Kanade gets framed, Yuri injured – following episode, Yuri, despite being injured, gets up and fight the clone. The fight ends with a disappointing stalemate between two Kanades.

I’m hoping for Yui to be the tsundere of this series. She’s been tsun-tsun up until this point but seeing her dere-dere upon Hinata’s death = I cried tears of joy.

@butterfli: Yes. The anti-climaticness of the following episodes are pretty annoying THREE TIMES IN A ROW.

I’m starting to get annoying by how bad this show is at cracking jokes yet keeps at it. Seriously, way too many unfunny moments out there.

Oi, don’t be lazy! Just because you expect us to comment on where you didn’t doesn’t mean we will…no actually, we will. I bet if you just left an empty page with an episode header on it, we would all comment on the whole episode.

Speaking of yandere, did you see some of those sadistic smirks Kanade had on her face? That was freaky. Personally, I believe Yuri has a bit of a personal grudge against her.

I really managed to enjoy the montage in which nearly all the team members ended up getting stabbed. TK’s death was awesome.

It’d be kind of lame to have her go right back to primary antagonist after all this effort removing her from the role. Maybe she’ll just have a bizarre personality switch that’ll kick her out of deadpan mode?

Maybe they’ll all fuse the aggressiveness and then Tenshi will turn from deadpan to badass deadpan again!

Fusing the aggressiveness would totally violate any sort of conservation of energy laws; not that we’re abiding by them here, but… if they happen to play the ‘added aggression’ I’ll facepalm for a week. In the least, we could have 1 clone, X amount of aggression; clone splits, X/2 amount of aggression, etc, but I’m still totally okay with this equal aggression for any clone concept, but when combining them, it just doesn’t make sense that the effect should be additive. Rather I think set union would be a much more reasonable take….

Let’s hope they don’t do this additive stuff, so dumb.

  14. Grimmer Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 2:47 am

There’s nothing particularly ‘dumb’ about the additive aspect…after all we’re talking about an ability that creates ‘clones’ here. If you clone yourself you don’t divide yourself by two lol, you just get multiplied by two. So if you would ‘absorb’ your clone it’d only be logical that you end up with ‘more’.

Anyway, golden tenshi being kindness incarnate and red tenshi being somewhat evil, I’m guessing the gold will cancel out loads and loads of red…in the end I’m going with split personality…Eventually she’ll purge herself of all vileness with tha powa of love or something like that. And that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Gotta love all the TK moments this episode

-Flailing arms in class with a straight face
    -Breakdancing in the hallway
    -Chanelling Admiral Ackbar (“Trap”)
-A Leeroy Jenkins moment as he charges the Tenshi clone (complete with hilarious war cry and awesome jump)

    @Kaisos

I’m loving the show the way it is. It reminds me of Gintama. This whole show is a string expectation subversion that has me in stitches most of the time. I especially love the dramatic deaths. Yuri is the only one who ever seems to remember that dieing doesn’t matter in their world.

Yuri is becoming more and more like Haruhi in some way not through IQ…

Maybe Yuri is the real Angel ha ha ha ha, she is bored with her role that’s why she start this SSS thingy and also created a fake Angel while she pretends to be the one that led the rebellion against fake Angel.

You know, they should really do a spinoff, T.K. Beats, that consists of nothing but T.K. doing his shit all day long. It would probably be the best anime production in a decade.

    @Kaisos: Promise? Ahahahahahahaha

@Onion: Because she plays that for the shits and giggles.

  21. butterfli Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 11:43 am

Promise? What promise? Angel Beats is a comedy. Comedies lack character development and plot. Take The Simpsons for example. Homer’s the same dumbass he was 20 years ago when the shoe started. The show has no plot whatsoever. But the show is still delivering its name – comedy delivered through its satirical humor.

  24. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

@ewok: Once they do that I am dropping Angel Beats! because it will never be as awesome as that episode anymore.

@Haesslich: I don’t think any of them have killed the NPC’s just yet.

  25. Haesslich Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 1:11 pm

Kurogane: The light novel makes it clear Yurippe decides that killing NPC’s is good to get God’s attention… so it’s already happened, since the light novel is set before the anime/in between episodes. They all tie together to tell the story, after all.

  26. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 2:06 pm

@Haesslich: I haven’t read the light novels yet. I guess I should now!

  27. Beruchi Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 2:14 pm

@Haesslich Did you read chapter 5-7 of the Light Novel as well (I can’t read Kanji without furigana XD), so I’m waiting for translations. (Or Manga, whichever is faster)

  28. Son Gohan Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 3:45 pm

@Haesslich: but in the end Hinata talked her out of that idea because he didn’t want to behave like a homicidal maniac, so I think she never actually killed an NPC.

About GS Harmonics: it’s not that Kanade programmed it to be aggressive, it happened because the clone retained her aggressive feeling against the River King at the moment she was created.
It’s funny that Harmonics seems to work exactly the same as Naruto’s Kagebunshin no Jutsu: the clones transmit their experiences to the original when they dissolve. Knowing Key, I predict that Kanade will be overwhelmed by the sensation and will fall ill.

One question, why Tenshi has endurance to bullets and explosives? None of her abilities explain this, except Overdrive……is it?

does no one else wonder if melee weapons are actually effective why are they all using guns instead of pointy objects or explosions?

  31. Chris Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 7:52 pm

@Chewy: The most obvious thing that comes to mind is that out of the SSS, only Yuri can be considered as being good enough to spar one on one with Tenshi. Can you imagine someone like Ooyama/Yui challenging Kanade’s clones to a knife showdown?

  32. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    May 23, 2010 @ 9:00 pm

Well, Yuri seems to be well trained in fighting and stuff. I wonder what her life was after the robbery? Did she go crazy and went on shounen level-up journey to improve her fighting skills so she could take revenge and protect the people she loves? It still wasn’t revealed how she died yet….

Who knows, maybe in life, she was some bad ass female teen assassin or mercenary.

@doki doki: it looks like only Kanade has it. Maybe she materialized it herself from dirt when she came to the world from her memories. Ties in with the theory she used to be on the DotA team.

  33. DocAstaroth Said,

    @ Kurogane

Interesting thought: Maybe she really she went Bruce Wayne after the death of their siblings and started to train to take down criminals. In any case, she really took a page out Batman´s book by all her preperations.

My theory is, that she died by her first unsuccessful attempt as vigilante or, even worse, after a successful attempt, she was seen herself as criminal by the adults and died as such one.

  40. Chewy Said,

    May 25, 2010 @ 3:39 am

@Chris eh regardless no one packs a melee weapon even though its the most useful. It doesn’t even have to be a knife, something like a taser should work. Or maybe some kinda electrical rod.

Other ranged weapons are obviously explosives. Explosive bullets, grenades launchers, grenade launcher rifles, flash, grenades, incinenary grenades yet no one wants to pack anything that would seem remotely useful.

yay for plot armor i guess?

  41. FlameStrike Said,

    May 25, 2010 @ 1:25 pm

Well that 5 dan guy did shoot a Rocket Launcher at her in ep 1. As for melee weapons, it could be a lack of training/ability to use them effectively. Made that crazy axe dude could do something but he always gets sniped first XD. As for why melee weapons seem to work, my theory is that distortion prevents her from attacking offensively. So when Kanade engages Yuri in a 1v1 she deactivates it temporarily in order to try and stab her. If she had distortion on there’s no way in hell a melee weapon would get past it seeing as bullets and EXPLOSIVES don’t even work.
