Angel Beats! begins

Angel Beats!

Kanaminator!

Deadpan Kana-chan is deadpan.

First episode of Angel Beats is pretty interesting, with a good amount of initial exposition, interleaved with action and slapstick humor that just keeps one glued to the screen. I’m quite glad it lived up to my expectations.

Angel Beats!

Obey Haruh– oh wait

Still, Yurippe is awfully similar to Haruhi, only a lot less overbearing and a lot more rational type. Surprisingly, Harumi Sakurai’s rendition of her made me think of Nazuka Kaori instead. Had to double check cast list to make sure, hurr.

Kamiya Hiroshi’s Otonashi plays the perfect tsukkomi and voice of rationality as we get thrust in (together with him) in to this surreal afterlife world that seems to be a mash of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and generic school settings. Operation Tornado had me in stitches at first when Yurippe explained the contents of it. I mean… STEALING MEAL TICKETS FROM NPC’S. LOL.

Well, obviously going to be the most promising show of the season. I hope they deal with Kanaminator nicely, I have a feeling she could be something like Enma Ai’s existence in the universe of Jigoku Shoujo, but that would be really calling it too soon isn’t it?

Well, the first episode was fun. I hope, P.A.Works doesn´t screw up this like CANAAN (Nice looking, but uninteresting end).

I agree on the comparison with Haruhi…

But where did they get all this guns and machines from… I agree on Otonashi: It´s far too early to think about this.

Betting it’s some automatic self-generating system that allows them to eventually find what they need.

This IS the afterlife after all.

I liked the first episode, but I didnt think it was anything amazing or out of the ordinary

truthfully I enjoyed Kaichou wa Maid-sama and B Gata H Kei more, but thats only as far as ep 1 goes.

Episode 2 onwards will deal more with that the show is really about

I still miss the amazing music from the first trailer xD

I don’t think the story will be disappointing since Jun Maeda, the story-writer of Air and Clannad, is working for this.
The animation quality is also quite high, as already said in the pre-release special.

[…] basis of the story is actually pretty similar to The Matrix. Yuki’s a cute character. As some have mentioned, she does indeed have some Haruhi characteristics. But she’s even cuter when she […]

the first episode was pretty good , good music choices , and lot of badass people . but i wish that Otonashi was more badass and not such a scaredy cat . he should have some amazing power that the others don’t have , or maybe be super good at hunting angels . his character seriously disappointed me .

Well, this seems to be like the most polarizing show ever.

Btw. Do you think the title of this series implies that the main heroine is actually Tenshi and not Yurippe?

And why are there no adults in the after-life o.O
Can you even defeat the superior being of the after-life if you yourself can’t die?

Just a few random thoughts of mine^^

Um, you shouldn’t post that, dream.

Anyway, I was wondering why the SSS need an all-girls band to distract those NPCs and not mind-control them, and why the creators include it in the first place? Are they targeting those K-On! fans?

  12. Eriker Said,

I think the band was more like ENOZ from Haruhi, Otonashi reminds me of Kyon too(comedy self talk), Yurippe is Haruhi, Angel-chan is Nagato…Mikuru and Koizumi come later maybe too xD

i’ve got a theory – Tenshi isn’t a part of the system: she’s someone else fighting against reincarnation just like the others. except that she’s been doing it far, far longer (and has worked out some of the cheat codes).

Seems really simple to me actually… I bet the whole school is like special place on the way to the after life were only souls of students who died stop if their regret in death was being unable to finish school and because of that regret they cannot enter heaven. Than it makes sense why there are NPCS but no adults and why people who attend school as they are told disappear at some point.

This show is Haibane Renmei meets Haruhi Suzumiya with lots of guns. Oh, and lots of blood too.

I have no idea why they tried to shoot up the angel during their “operation”. Since it seems there is no consequence for doing anything bad at all (such as trying to assassinate the angel or stealing). They could just have moved on to the stealing part and dropped the ambush. Its kind of like thiefs trying to cover up a theft by doing a drive by shooting of the nearest police station. In other words the “cover up” is much more damaging than the crime itself. Not that it seems to be any punishment or death in this afterlife making the entire operation seem pointless.

How is this anything like Haruhi at all other than the character archetypes?

    The plots are completely different.

  18. ewok Said,

well, where do they get all the guns from? why some people are erased when they play nice while other persist while making mischief? why use the reincarnation argument – there is actually no proof that erased people reincarnate… I just hate people who shoot first and ask questions later…
And yeah Haruhi Suzumiya comparisons seem quite on the spot… still the plot is quite interesting in itself, so I am going to watch it – for the schoolguys/gals with machine guns, if not for anything else.

The plot is actually Haibane Renmei, the characters and the school/club setting is from Haruhi. If you have not seen this series I can highly recomend it. I would even say that seeing Haibane Renmei will give you more enjoyment when you watch Angel Beat.

I wasn’t very impressed by Angel Beats. The jokes were failing for me most of the time, there was too much Haruhi Lite around and the character animation was way too inconsistent. In the last season this might be somewhat notable, but right now? Don’t think so. Doomed to populate the average tier for me.

Why do you guys all believe it’s afterlife only because you are told it is?
The possibilities are quite wide range!
