L4D2 First Impressions

This game is seriously hard. Really seriously hard. The zombies are powered up. The Special Infected are powered up. The maps are powered up. And the events are powered up. Don’t forget too, the AI stupidity uselessness index is powered up too. (I miss Francis. And Zoey. And Louis.)

>>The zombies are powered up.

Yes, they aren’t one-hit-kills anymore, unless you go RE-style and SHOOT FOR THE HEADS. Shotguns are so nerfed it’s not fun anymore. Back in L4D, shotguns were the way to go (yes, they were overpowered admittedly), but nerfing shotguns to take 2-3 shots for one NORMAL zombie to die, with 30% less ammo capacity sure sucks. Even the rifles are pretty hard to headshot with, with the recoil and shit. L4D2 is now more “accuracy” than “raw power”. Not necessarily bad, but it takes the fun out of it a bit.

>>The Special Infected are powered up.

Jockeys are annoying as fuck and pretty much the second most powerful Special in the game after the Hunter due to their small size (which makes them hard to spot as fuck) and annoying ability (dragging you AWAY from the team). They should consider nerfing the damage Jockey does a lil’ bit…
Chargers and Spitters are rather more easier to deal with.

>>The maps are powered up.

They are pretty big. And full of nooks and crannies. I’ll have to give praise to the level designers. I kept having more fun exploring around the map than actually finding for the safe room.

>>And the events are powered up.

They provide a fresh change after the formulaic events in L4D. Admittedly though, Scavenger mode is annoying.

>>the AI stupidity uselessness index is powered up

God damn it. The AI fucking retarded. Even a Twinkie (to present to Tallahasse) would be ten orders of magnitude more useful than them. They don’t really know how to deal with getting horded or saving human players properly. I really feel like punching the AI guys. My friend even exploded to the point he just shot the down in the safe room and went ahead. I chose not to revive them.

    Really? It still only takes one shot gun kill for a common infected when I play…Totally agree with you on the jockey though, really annoying.

    I definitely don’t see how the shotgun is nerfed though – the thing can easily still kill a witch in one shot.

    And as for AI – I totally agree. Sometimes I kill them as they’re running into the safe room so I don’t have to deal with the hoard they summoned by shooting a car.

    Well, I honestly didn’t notice all that much difference between the AI in L4D and 2.
    The basic shotguns are indeed weak but the automatic ones are more powerful. I usually avoid the basic ones in L4D2 and go for SMG instead, short bursts for the heads work well. Killing Floor taught me to always go for the head <.<
    Anyway, I dunno about you but I had a lot of fun back there last night. Sure we died like guinea pigs in a reptile house but it was fun. Personally I think L4D2 has a lot more tactical depth.

    Bot Ai to me is, bad at noticing zombies, but if you point at a Hunter or something the bots will shoot it with 100% accuracy.

    I love the new maps, Hard Rain is my favorite. Me and my friends have gone through that level so many times.

    The thing about bots is that they won’t shoot a Jockey or Hunter that’s on you, the always want to run up and punt it off. Thus you end up taking hell of a lot more damage than if they just shot it off, especially if the horde is bogging the bots down.

    You should be playing this on Steam with real people… the AI was always bad, but this isn’t nearly so hard if you play with a few capable friends.

    Shotguns: These haven’t been so much nerfed as made more… realistic. Shotguns are supposed to be close range weapons, not like in L4D where you could be standing a couple car lengths away and still take something down with a single shot. You don’t actually need to aim at the head and pump a bunch of rounds if you can close the distance. Aim about chest/neck level, and I promise you, it’ll go down. Worried about getting too close? That’s what weak melee (with the gun, not melee weapon) is for ;) If you do that, 56 shells for Tier 1 shotguns shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t forget your secondary either!

    Jockeys: Strafe, strafe, strafe! This isn’t quite as effective as circle-strafing hunters, but it makes a difference. Don’t bother meleeing them unless they’re actually on someone. This is where your close quarter shotgunning will help you out.

    AI: Yeah…. they’re pretty dumb. I just use them as first aid carriers and bait (when they’re incapped).

    Whoops, replace “couple car lengths” with “dozen car lengths”!

    Everyone in the Animeblogger group but Guncannon sucks. I am never going to beat expert at this rate.

    Looks like I’ll have to port my cheat system to L4D2.

    This was one post I was actually looking forward to the screenshots and we get a tl;dr wall of text?

    @Miha: Forgot to take screenshots.

    @JTFish: LOL, yeah. I didn’t beat expert at L4D myself. I never found the proper to do it with.

    I really need to play more of it. Only had two games so far.

    I haven’t played L4D2 yet, but I believe your problem could be either from being away from the first game for a while, or the inexperience of the new stuff becoming a shock, which is common with expansion packs and the like.

    And I agree that I liked the old cast better. What is manly if not beardies and baldies, really?

    Haven’t found much issue with the shotguns myself, up close it’s still a one-shot nearly every time, except on expert realism where sometimes a zombie with no arms will still punch you :(

    Not had many issues with Jockeys, they’re pretty easy to kill after they hop onto someone, and unless you’re already miles apart they won’t have time to draw you away or do significant damage.

    Chargers on the other hand are the bane of my existance :/ I just utterly fail at avoiding them even though in theory it should be so easy to. And they do ridiculous damage once they’ve got you, losing 20+ health every time you’re slammed into the ground is very hurty :(

    @JTfish: Are you folks playing on PC or 360? If the former I wouldn’t mind leading a tour group (lol); been doing that often recently.

    Yeah, L4D2 is harder than hard, but Ellis’s crazy stories make up for it. xD

    I don’t know. I kinda loved how they decreased the maximum ammo and the way they powered up the zombies. This time, they payed more attention with the physics of the human body. Plus the decrease in ammo lets you enjoy the melee weapons ^.^

    L4D = Shotgun FTW
    L4D2 = Melee FTW

    Personally I prefer L4D2. More varieties in every areas. The melee were emphasize. Hell~ I love the Magnum and Katana. But yea… primary weapon wise, shotgun is pretty useless. I relied on Machine guns throughout the whole game. AK47 FTW!

    I can’t believe how damn nerfed them shotguns are. I am used to ignoring how much ammo I have left with a shotgun. Not almost crying in sorrow every time I waste a friggin’ shell on a singular infected. >.>

    The AI seems even more useless than the first game. Seriously, how could Valve screw us over so much with an AI that isn’t even CLOSE to a players skill level?

    I do admire the rifles though. That military rifle just keeps drawing me in, making me want to use it, even though I just love the SPAS-12. I just love using that rifle. It’s just so fun.

    The survivors suck. The only real survivor I like, is Ellis. His stories and such are the only thing that keep me going. However, I got sick of seeing them, so I use the L4D 1 survivors now.

    The melee weapons are great. I really can’t decide which is my favorite. The Katana is just great. So is the Machete. Crowbar is somewhat win. The Fire Axe, however, is just boring. It just seems to be EVERYWHERE. It’s like it’s haunting me. The Guitar is kind of meh. If it looked a bit cooler, I probably would use it more. Everything else doesn’t need to be mentioned.

    The maps are just incredible. I was expecting tiny, cramped maps, like in the first. But no. I was greeted by huge, huge vista’s of sheer awesome. I didn’t manage to find a single nodraw texture, which is rare in a Source engine map.

    All in all, a pretty good sequel to the first. And if the rumors are true, I look forward to Left 4 Dead 3.

    L4D3 lol what? Please wait till 2011 to do that at least. I am sick of buying a new L4D every year!

    Plus, I can’t wait for the DLC to come! I really miss Francis, Louis, Zoey and Bill.
