Medaka Box

A newly serialized and surprisingly enjoyable manga. Decided to check it out after seeing it pop out so much in Manga-Updates new releases.

Kurokami Medaka is pretty damn awesome and while she may be a bit like Haruhi, she’s much more likable and more charismatic than her. The “Kyon-kun” of the series isn’t a total pushover either and complements her perfectly. I suppose that was the manga-ka’s aim.

Jokes are more funnier and easier to get too. Already a fan of this manga and I sure hope it goes somewhere. You can more info here.

She also strips to her underwear without any discomfort (actually, she enjoys it), and the first person she has to deal with is Kittan. Definitely looking forward for more.

It’s a nice read, of course the ecchi bits are a big bonus. It seems that there are a few inconsistencies though like the Judo club for instance, in the first chapter the girly looking guy wasn’t there but in chapter 4 he is….mah it’s not that I complain about it, still Madeka is freakin WIN XD

This is by Nishio Ishin who’s considering one of the top light novel authors around. SHAFT is about to animate his Bakemonogatari novels and WHITE FOX (Tears to Tiara) are animating Katanagatari in 2010, one OVA per month.

    @ ryggim

You’re thinking of the one shot which doesn’t exist now in canon since chapter 1 overrides it. The Kendo club part replaced it so to say.

Yes. Nisio Isin is a hero to all mankind, and I’ve sworn that I would consume anything and everything he’s involved in after reading the entire Zaregoto series (which is FUCKING FANTASTIC). Medaka Box is awesome, though I wish he could’ve collaborated with Obata Takeshi again instead of this guy. It’s not like the art is bad, but Obata Takeshi is simply one of the best manga artist alive today.

Dog chapter was the best one so. I hope Shiranui gets more screen time.

The new guy on Chapter 4 reminds me of a “kuro” Itsuki koizumi…

i propose we kill him.. NAO!!!

Eh, I NEARLY gave up on it on the first chapter when I read that Medaka was fucking top at everything. God, I fucking hate that cliche.

Still, didn’t turn out to be too bad in the end, so I’m sticking with it for the time being.

Medaka Box is a great Newcomer. I hope, it survives… Until now, every new series in the WSJ I liked, was canceled! T_T

I like Medaka Kurosaki, but like Haruhi she isn´t exactly in focus of her own series while still being the center of the plot.
I also think while Medaka being more sympathic, Haruhi is the complexer figure of both of them, but okay, this is a Shounen series after all.
And Hitoyoshi Zenkichi is simply BadAss!

But my favourite character as far as now is Shiranui (alone the name! ^_^)

I still miss something like a golden thread. Well, on the other hand this may change now.^^

I read what’s been scanlated so far. It’s fucking incredible.

I think the Haruhi comparisons are a little unfair. Medaka is a different archetype entirely, despite similarities.

Zenkichi is totally a GAR-ed up Kyon though.

I love how Medaka copies people’s poses behind them, especially that kendo guy :D

And yes, I totally love this, along with Beelzebub. Quite good newcomers

To be honest Medaka reminded me of a Genderbendered Lelouch what with her grand gestures and constant” JUST AS PLANNED” face and what not Dx

Was just reading hayate 226 on mangafox. Suprisingly, Medaka Box was ref-ed in that chapter. Love Medaka’s uniform, btw.

@Wrathkal: Yes, that chapter prompted me to go read it actually. And it’s 225 actually. And Bod Rangzen is so fucking random with his scanlations.

Thanks for introducing me to Medaka Box, Kurogane. I totally agree with your take.

The oneshot was vastly superior to the series.

It quickly becomes a boring cliche’ of the heroine solving various problems of the student body that offer loads of opportunities for fanservice.

Yankee-kun to Megane-chan does the same thing but the jokes are 100x funnier and it doesn’t rely on fanservice as much.

I fail to see how this manga “relies on fanservice”.

Aside from the panty shots (which are in like 90% of anime/manga anyway) most of the ‘fanservice’ is legitimately funny.

In nearly every chapter there’s a T&A shot. In the last chapter (Ch 6) there’s several.
There’s loads of comedy manga that don’t need panty shots to be popular or funny (Angel Densetsu, Beelzebub, Hajimete no Aku, The World God Only Knows, Ocha Nigosu anyone?).

The series showed some promise at the beginning but it’s quickly wears off when you realize it’s going to be very episodic like To Love-Ru. If you like it, great. To me, it just seems very over done. I was hoping there’d be something more to the gimmick they were using.

As I stated previously, the oneshot was much better written than the series. It’s a shame they changed the story in the first chapter. IMO, comedy manga like Yankee-kun to Megane-chan has much better jokes and doesn’t need the fanservice to be popular. The above-listed comedy manga all have good jokes (some of them are reused throughout the manga) without falling flat or becoming stale

Hmm, the latest chapter looks as though this is starting to go in a direction I don’t like.

its really a big example of a gag manga turned to a battle manga

i personally like the first few chapters better
and Hitoyoshi’s role is kindda getting smaller : P which i dont like it , not one bit

  24. Tsut Said,

I think the author is experimenting with the genre a little because earlier in the series it seemed that the plot was going to twist it to a harem type manga with Hitoyoshi. Although, that could’ve been just wishful thinking on my part. If you haven’t read past chapter 15 then please discard the rest of this comment. After chapter 15 it sort of turns into an action based manga then add a little mystery genre with the intro of the flask plan and party 13 which is confusing at first. And I agree that Hitoyoshi’s character was getting smaller as we learned more about these characters and the plot behind them. However, I just finished reading chapter 27 and between chapter 25 to the current one Hitoyoshi’s character has become more developed as the chapters progress. He seems to rise to Medaka’s level while still being able to view the world from a “normal’s” perspective instead of the “abnormal’s” perspective like Medaka and Unzen. I think many questions were answered when the author introduced Medaka’s brother. I am looking forward to more chapters and to find out exactly what the flask plan is. Not to to mention the tag team battle with Medaka and Hitoyoshi and the rest of the student council members.
