Whoa, this OVA was so not what I expected. I thought it’d be a lighthearted romp through the Da Capo world again, but it turns out to be something like D.C.II.S.S. instead.
For starters, yes, this is a Kotori End OVA, but guess how they’re making it happen?
..they killed off Nemu. Yeah. She’s dead. For about a year too in the OVA’s time frame. That’s…. really unexpected.
But it does give a good enough reason for the writers to go down the Kotori path, since their relationship got closer after Nemu’s death with Kotori basically taking over Nemu’s role (and doing a better job at it too) of taking care of Junichi.
Also, Nemu’s death seems to have made Junichi a much more adult person now, since his attitude’s a lot more like Yoshiyuki rather than the one in the original anime series. Frankly speaking I didn’t even watch past episode 10 of it, but I think this version of Junichi is much more palatable than the old one. It also kinda makes Junichi x Kotori a lot more justified.
That said, the drama levels are really high in this OVA. The latter half of the episode has Junichi finally trying to move on from Nemu’s loss by cleaning up her room and her stuff, with the other girls all helping out. Somehow, Kotori doesn’t like that idea, even if it means Junichi has decided to move on to her from Nemu. In fact, he almost confesses his love for her properly, but Kotori just can’t accept it being done that way. Personally, I think it’s really stupid of Kotori to do that to herself, since she’s practically thinking that she’s not being fair towards Nemu, or she’s just plain insecure, but one year is a long, long period to move on, especially for a teenager. Seriously, it’s like D.C.II S.S’s drama, complete with “walking around in the rain” and “crying at the sakura tree” scenes.
Pretty much gonna watch the next one now, to see how things are resolved.
P.S. Somehow I am not used to Yui Horie in this role anymore. Probably she’s had too much crazy roles lately, like Toradora’s Minorin.
