I´ve heard it enough times already myself. Not as brutal as Luke had to hear it but still. It hurts. When I played the game I was torn, ordinary Luke is a spoiled brat but he has good intentions and can act really nice to the ones around him. Natalia and Guy being examples, but as soon as Van enters the stage Luke is so freaking dumb and you just want to kill him. That´s why I don´t feel sorry for him with what happened. He had it comming if I should say so. But no, his existance did have a meaning. To be Vans puppet to make his dreams and a lot of stuff that is comming available. Throw in the loss of memories, secluded lifestyle and the fact that everyone except for Van seemed to pity him, but never took seriously, and you will be surprised of how nicely he behaves. Despite his age, he's pretty much a child who doesn't know his way around the world and gets easily played by the likes of Van. So, given his background, he's role-played pretty well...
