Ga-Rei Zero 03

Ga-Rei Zero

Remember all the speculation that the show go in to “flashback” mode? It happened.

The third installment finally slows down the show’s frenetic pace of the first two and rewinds back to the first meeting between Yomi and Kagura and how they subsequently became siblings in spirit. Yomi sure was a fun-loving and free-spirited girl, so something truly terrible must’ve happened to her to turn her in to the monster that she is. Perhaps it’s related to the “Will you kill someone you love for love?” subtext that appeared in the earlier episodes?

The show finally gets a real theme song, and as speculated, it is Minorin’s latest single song, Paradise Lost, as well as the first time she sings solo for an anime OP/ED. It’s quite similar in tone to her older songs like 君がくれたあの日 and 詩人の旅, so fans of her will love the new single. I’m not quite attracted to it though, perhaps like j1mone, I’m a bit underwhelmed by her style now. It may change when the full song comes out.

Another point to talk about is Kaori Mizuhara’s performance as Yomi, virtually unrecognizable in the first two episodes with her sadistic and self-confident tone, but this episode she slips back to a more laidback tone, suitable to the portrayal of the younger Yomi that exudes an aura of friendliness. It’s almost hard to believe that this is her first major role. I agree with j1mone as well that Kaori Mizuhara has a nice onee-san voice, but I wouldn’t put it fully in the realm of “sexy”. Instead, I think she sounds extremely reliable and a comfortable person to be with. Shiraishi Minoru also seems to be making quite a good impression as Sakuraba Kazuki.

Are we ever going to get an OP?

Actually, Paradise Lost is the OP theme.

Flashback mode? How long are we going to be stuck in this? =O

I will pick it up again if I hear if either the crew in the first episode survives, or the drill-guy does, Yomi is nothing but annoying and I don’t think I have ever built up so much hate for a fictional character under such a short time.

@The Hordesman: Huh? Why is she annoying? I mean if you see her as “bitch” or “scary” or “omg-so-hawt-i-dun-mind-you-kill-me” I can understand, but “annoying?

Also the drill guy won’t die any time soon. No idea about the episode 1 crew though.

“Hi there, I am a pretty cool fella without a as of yet proper developed character background!” followed by “Y Helo Thar, I am a school girl with a katana who is now going to kill you, interesting cool fella and everyone you have ever known as a bonus.”

    That sort of annoying.

I have nothing against killing off main characters. Killing them off before you get to know them properly is one thing, but killing of every character you have seen in the first episode IN the first episode is surely a class of it’s own. Sure got me trolled.

Oh. LOL. If you’re talking about that, yar, we all got trolled badly (in a good way). After episode one, I grabbed every scanlated manga of Ga-Rei available and read it, so now I have a real appreciation of what the producers are doing.

Seriously, the fact that they killed off the “Episode 1” team is definitely one of the best series opener ever.

Yup, I was completely thrown off by episode one since it was nothing like the manga. Almost gave it up if it wasn’t for episode 2… and now episode 3. Drill guy is still alive in the manga so I doubt we’ll see his death when the series ends. I’m already waiting for a second season announcement if the quality holds.

A pity that no scanlation team is working on the manga. Stuck in hiatus I believe.

    Isn’t the manga licensed?

@E360: Not officially yet, according to Baka-Updates.
