Fall 08: 「Yozakura Quartet」 Impressions

Looks like the anime keeps the same terrible series exposition as the manga was. Admittedly, not one of the best things to keep when adapting something, but I guess it’s more “faithful”.

First off, people keep comparing this to Rental Magica, but I digress actually. The whole setup is a bit more different than what Rental Magica was, once you’ve read enough of the manga. Also, the whole “nandemo-ya” premise has much more older and different roots than Rental Magica’s “only magical problems” setup. Those people are actually jack-of-all-trades, not professionals like in Rental. Additionally, I’d like to say Sakura-shinmachi’s setting makes me think of FLCL for some reason.

I’ve had the opportunity to read the manga up till somewhere halfway of vol.2, so I believe the show is going to be a fun watch if they keep up with it, despite the fallacy in the show’s multi-layered and, at times, temporally jarring story telling. “Just pay attention to the details” is all I can say.

The first episode generally keeps in tone with the manga, IIRC, so it does make for a very confusing start (which was a bit more worse than in the manga actually), especially in regard for the main quartet of Akina, Hime, Kotoha and Ao as we’re only gradually introduced to their powers, instead of being explained right from the beginning.

Personally, my favourite is Kotoha’s kotodama powers, and there’s an extremely awesome part in the manga that I guess they will animate later, but till then, let’s wait for it. Must add that having Miyuki Sawashiro play Kotoha was a pretty good surprise for me.

I’m also pumped for the show’s music, because the theme of music does appear quite a bit in the original work and it’s glad to see it’s kept in the transition to the anime medium. savage genius handles the OP, which is definitely one of the better ones amongst the fall titles now. Perennial favourite Round Table feat. Nino sings the ED and it’s another nice and gentle listen from them.

Gonna keep this on the radar for now.

So just how bad are the pacing issues again?

I sincerely hope that, with my inexplicable hype for this series, I won’t be turned away by the “drawbacks” you pointed out here… Though I am praying that a fansub group would first pick this up. v_v
