“Anata no Oto”

  • Battle Frontier almost suffers a direct hit from a Vajra warship. Quarter bails them out at the last minute.
  • Alto didn’t die because he escaped his unit and remote controlled it using his suit while hiding in the wreckage of a battleship. God damn it, we didn’t think of remote control! He further tells Quarter to shoot the giant Ranka which reveals it’s true form; Battle Galaxy.
  • Leon gets arrested on assasinating President Glass when Cathy breaks it out.
  • Grace interfaces with the Queen. Galaxy simultaneously launches multiple Ghosts to help counter the attack by Frontier and Quarter.
  • Alto gets a special delivery from Klan (LOLI IN A VALKYRIE!!!); his VF-25. Empowered by both Sheryl and his VF-25, Alto rejoins the fight.
  • Battle commences in full ferocity. Alto calls out to Ranka using the fold quartz earring.
  • Grace finally controls the Queen and she uses it to gain full control on the Vajra and she sends Vajra attackers to Macross 11 (why only that ship?) and to Earth as well.
  • Interesting tidbit: Tori no Hito from MacZero is actually Vajra as well?
  • Under control by Grace, the Vajra launch a ferocious barrage to our heroes. Sheryl collapses in the attack and her hair turns grey.
  • In midst of the despair, Ranka’s voice is heard. Brera, now finally freed from his slave system, tells her to sing her heart out. Ranka’s voice manage to reach the Vajra and they go back under her control.
  • In fold-space, Ranka calls out to Sheryl. Sheryl says that her job is finished and Ranka slaps her (WTF!!!!). Ranka tells her to not to give up and Alto echoes the same thing. Ranka magically moves the V-type virii from her brain to her stomach, and Sheryl is revived.
  • Ranka-Sheryl medley begins, with nearly all their songs making an appearance. Accompanied by this medley, Quarter punches a hole in Galaxy for Alto to rescue Ranka. Oh god, My Boyfriend is a Pilot -Sheryl ver.-!!
  • Grace is pissed and targets Island 1 with the Queen’s main weapons. However, the Vajra form a shield and absorbs the blast, saving the humans.
  • Ranka explains to Alto that the Vajra also have feelings, but they don’t understand why we fight each other so much so they tried to rescue/kidnap her in order to understand humans. Thanks to hers and Sheryl’s songs, the Vajra have finally understood us.
  • Song medley continues. GOD DAMN IT STICK TO ONE DAMN SONG DAMMIT!!! Seriously it’s a bit distracting for them to change songs so much.
  • Final counterattack: The Vajra open a hole in the Queen’s barrier, for Quarter and Battle Frontier to enter. Galaxy moves to cover it and they both take a direct hit from it’s main cannon. Canaria rushes forth and opens a chance for Quarter to destroy Galaxy’s weapon using a MACROSS ATTACK! and Frontier finishes it off.
  • Alto and Brera cooperate together (mmm fanservice!) and they both take out the Queen’s head where Grace is at. Thankfully, Brera explains that the Vajra think with their guts than their head, so the queen will be fine. Alto finishes Grace off using Micheal’s favourite gun.
  • The queen begins to sing Aimo. Ranka further explains that the song is actually mating song which is used when the Vajra meet with others of their kind from other galaxies every few hundred million years.
  • Bilrer’s true intentions: to meet Lynn Minmei again. LOL. Kawamori is such a bloody tease.
  • Show ends with Alto flying in the skies of the Vajra planet, while Ranka and Sheryl look at him. Ranka declares love-war on Sheryl and she accepts graciously with a “KIRA~!” pose ROFL! The ending theme is Triangler duet by Sheryl and Ranka. Alto Harem End(?)

The ending is so… inconclusive. Worst type of end in my opinion dammit. Urge to kill Kawamori seriously rising. It’s never revealed who Alto chooses and everyone just manages to survive and land happily on the planet. I just feel like my feelings have all been trampled over and thrown away like a used dirt rag. Oh man, I was at least expecting some deaths.

Anyways, there’s still the just-announced Macross Frontier movie as well. I guess it’s probably a retelling of the series or even maybe an DYRL-style “historical movie”. But I hope it continues the story instead. I need more Alto x Sheryl!!!

P.S. WE ALL HAVE BEEN TROLLED HAVEN’T WE? HAVEN’T WE?!!!! *breaks down in a corner and cries*

Yup. Mr. Bilrer is Minmei’s biggest fan, and apparently wanted the Fold Quartz in order to find her. Or at least was hoping she’d be with the Vajra. His devotion makes Nanase’s to Ranka look like Alto’s in comparison. What REALLY threw me was the Alto/Brera team-up, with the former going in to pull a DYRL shot on Cylon Grace. Who, for some reason, has nipples (and unlike Code Geass, they’re not afraid to draw them).

And Kawamori seems to enjoy trolling everyone, which is probably why he did this.

By the way, aren’t the first and third references to Galaxy supposed to be Battle Frontier?

  3. Haesslich Said,

… and this also means that every time Ranka sang Aimo, she was confusing the Vajra by putting them into heat? And they got somewhat pissed at Ranka for putting in the ‘fake Vajra Viagra’ version (via Grace), which is why the kidnapping happened in episode 22? Which is why they let Grace control the Queen, of course…

… something doesn’t quite make sense. Maybe it’s best to wait for the subs.

Ha ha, why am I the only one not really disappointed with the finale? I mean, Macross is categorized as Mecha with Romance garnishings, remember? Please, people seem to forget that, for all Kawamori’s baiting in the romance angle, he certainly delivered with the Mecha Action. I mean, seriously, Battle Galaxy AND Battle Frontier going at it?! Those are kilometer-high capital transformed capital ships, Kuro.

    … I’m a little surprised though that Haess’ train-of-thought mode of replying seems to manifest in other places as well aside from DbD. ^^;

Ah well, it’s Macross. I suppose we can let that slide.

  6. Karasu Said,

Why oh why oh why would it have killed them to actually give us an ending were Alto chose between Sheryl and Ranka?

I mean did they really have to go with the same old cliched harem end? Especially with how the last few episodes have been going I was hoping to get a ending with more closure.

Oh well Macross Frontier was a fun, and slightly irritating at times, ride while it lasted

  7. Camario Said,

    September 26, 2008 @ 10:46 am

Well, I guess that means I probably won’t be watching Macross Frontier until the movie comes out and somehow resolves this.

The series might be pretty good otherwise, even great in terms of action from the looks of things…but if they want me to care about the romance angle they’ve spent so much time on, some resolution would be nice.

  8. Haesslich Said,

Myssa: It’s more that I type those things in, hit post, then remember ‘Shit, forgot to put that part in’ and do it again and again.

Still, this was an epic troll by Kawamori. I’m not so sure I agree with ‘curing’ Sheryl like that, but at least it keeps her alive for the movie. And as for the romance… nothing got resolved, so if I was in this for the shipping, I’d be up in arms. Must say that Grace… well, I’m surprised they drew her with nipples, given how other shows this season (or past seasons) seem to avoid that. That, and drawing Nanase cute instead of merely a ‘meganekko with a big rack’ was surprising, although Luca being at her beside was not.

Also, how did Brera go from cold contempt to being Alto’s cheerful wingman again? Because he saved his sister, all was forgiven?

  9. Crusader Said,

Oh ye of little faith we have heard Ranka take up a “I won’t lose attitude before” all I have to say to that is, “were it so easy.” Sure Ranka thinks she has a chance, but until I get definitive proof that Sheryl moves out and Alto-hime gives her back her earring then I doubt miss 20 seconds of development Ranka can win her unilaterally declared love war. At least miss no development moved aside for more imporatnt things like Battle Galaxy with it millions of drones!

Still mecha pr0n is good and I was giddy the whole time.

Poor Richard Bilrer maybe in the next Macross series we can see Minmei again…

So since the Vajra Queen was ready and eager to made does that mean Grace mated with the Queen? So sad to see Grace go, that sad look on her face told it all, she wanted to see Kabuki-hime too…

  10. Myssa Rei Said,

    September 26, 2008 @ 12:25 pm

Crusader: Leave it to the soldier to be harsh. I’d think it would be more accurate to say that Ranka’s character development had more backsliding than actually being stagnant. She IS a kid, after all, confused with new emotions — and that Vajra stuff in here aren’t exactly helping with the hormones.

Still, compared to Sheryl’s build-up of character from what she was when she was first introduced, then one does feel that Ranka barely moved from where she was at the start of the series.

There’s still the movie to look forward to though. It’s still not known if it’s a sequel or a ‘historical movie’, so we’ll just have to see.

    Damn I need those subs!!

Will probably arrive later today :) But it kinda feelt like most parts from Kurogane´s rant where obvious. Ranka curing Sheryl for once is a big obvious, would have been way better for the show to end with Sheryl dying screaming out Alto´s name and Alto “hearing” it and then getting blown to bits :p

Ok I´m joking, but it would make for a not so “generic” ending.

And what´s this about a movie? Sure I´ll bite but what can they show? Vajran forces that aren´t communicating with the ones they just defeated?

It has to be somewhat like the music video they made to retell Macross instead…

  12. Crusader Said,

    September 26, 2008 @ 12:40 pm

But comrade Myssa I am only harsh because I am disappointed in Ranka. I am hard but I am fair. She will not like me but the more Ranka hates me the more she will learn. The problem was never that she was a kid, but rather that she is still a kid.

Well I got my transforming capital ship action I cam happy and content.

  13. Haesslich Said,

    September 26, 2008 @ 1:00 pm

Ranka didn’t really develop from Episode 12-13 to Episode 21, and she wasted all that time from Ep 10 (where she was upset about not knowing about Kabuki-hime’s past) up to 21… so the romance angle between her and Alto was stagnant. Her PERSONALITY backslid between Episodes 22-24, though, so I’ll agree to that part, but for much of the series the triangle between Alto and Ranka consisted more of wishful thinking on her side (as well as the shippers) than anything else.

At least Ranka did something towards the end… even if she had to be rescued first. Still, Grace was tied into Vajra-net and was doing real-time communications enough to direct Vajra to Earth, which suggests she MIGHT have had a chance to upload to the Resurrection Ship before the end, if there were any Macross Galaxy ships which weren’t with Battle Galaxy and which had a ‘terminal’ to receive her.

And poor Mr. Bilrer – he really is a devoted fan. Almost fifty years after she vanished, and he still pines for her. Poor guy.

Crusader: Funny, I’d have pegged you a ground-pounder, but it seems that you have something of a naval man in you. Sieg Noe? ~_^

Space Marines don’t specialize in ship-to-ship battles (boardig actions yes), so you can understand why I never really gravitated to the Ranka vs Sheryl fleet maneuvers. :p Oh boy, the animosity between camps makes the Battle of Leyte Gulf that was fought in my father’s province of origin seem like a bath-tub quarrel.

Besides, my mecha fangirling pretty much made me tune out the episodes that highlighted the triangle instead of expanding the Macross universe.

    Alto x Brera!

Also, SUPERGIANT ROBOBATTLE is teh win!

Personally, it’s no biggie that he doesn’t chose anyone in the end. His love was ALWAYS the endless blue sky from the very first episode, not any of the girls.

    @Myssa Rei
When they have space forces you can be sure I will be one of the first to sign up other wise they are tiny and hot bunking sounds crappy.

The fan camp war was more like the Somme, the actual love war between Sheryl and Ranka was more like Leyte Gulf since we had a Turkey shoot, Shibyuan Sea, Surigao Strait, Samar, and an Engano. I don’t know but my gut tells me that Kawamori just didn’t feel like shitting all over Ranka even if she deserved to see more consequences of her actions in favor of making mecha fans happy with big ships going at it. Still I have faith that Alto-hime will up hold his oath to be with Sheryl until the end, the end just got extended by many years. Still since Ranka has not been developing that much we shall see if she can dig Sheryl out of hime’s home and seize that room for herself. Still hime did like that earring a lot so I guess Sheryl did find it useful as a hime tag too.

I liked all of it for the most part watching Sheryl grow from diva bitch to a wonderful woman was enjoyable. Heck all the SherylxAlto-hime moments did look awfully yurilicious to say the least… ;)

Myssa Rei: You’re not the only one not disappointed with the finale. I’m in my office and my co-workers probably are wondering why I was hyperventilating. ^^;;; I normally could eat my lunch while watching Macross F, but not today.

As for shipping, I started as a Ranka fan, but as everyone pointed out, she really didn’t develop at all! So as the series progressed, I became more and more of a Sheryl fan.

However, I really didn’t think Macross would be a “shipping” series (other than those awesome, did I say AWESOME? cap ship battle). The original didn’t turn into one until the last 12 episodes, and it was more focused on people rebuilding their shattered life. Same thing for Macross Plus, Macross 7 (urgh), or Macross Zero. I think the only one that is really focused on love story was DYRL.

So yes, I really enjoyed Macross F., not only because I’m an “old cake” (

Urgh… forgot about the tags… Anyway:

So yes, I really enjoyed Macross F., not only because I’m an “old cake” (Cantonese Slang), but I thought it was good on it’s own. While Ranka’s character development really stalled, I thought all the other character developed rather nicely. Even Lucas developed a spine. My favorites are still Sheryl and Grace in character development.

For the ending was not unexpected, but like Crusader, I think Sheryl have a much much better chance of winning in the end. After all, she has a much stronger personality and affinity with Alto-hime. Also, I think Ranka will have a hard life ahead of her, with a lot of people kill while she was “brain-washed”. I somehow don’t think people will forgive her so quickly.

Anyway, I will stop over thinking this series and wait for the movie.

Now when I´ve vitnessed the ep it just feels bad. Nice quality animation. Where the fuck is my duet with Watashi wa kare wa Piloto? Those few damn seconds isn´t good enough.

Ending is meh, rushed and from as many standpoints as possible just terrible. Open endings suck.

  21. Di Gi Kazune Said,

Open endings are GOOD. SDF Macross had an open ending. What ever happened to Rick Hunter and the… err… wait… That’s Robotech… but you get the picture.

It was fun to watch the Ranka camp and Sheryl camp of fanbois attack each other with gusto and vigor as much as watching Battle Frontier pwn Battle Galaxy. Honestly speaking, there wasn’t going to be any resolution of the so called love triangle. Kawamori was being a tease. Alto already said that his love is the endless blue sky.

This discussion could become an episode by episode thesis about character construction but the summary is:
Ranka raburabu Alto is more one way. R–>A Alto acts more like an onii-chan. So does that mean that Ranka now has 3 onii-chans? (ABORT! ABORT! ABORT THESIS MODE!)
Sheryl raburabu is still fairly a one way street although traffic does come back.

But the key point is that both see Alto as the man who changed their lives. Alto sees them more as friends because…

Look at how he guides his VF-25 to him… in the middle of an allout war!

So, in conclusion, Alto’s Preference chart:
    SKY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sheryl > Ranka

PS. Personal opinion is Klan is better for anyone. You get a choice between huge mammaries and pettanko!

Yes,I do agree with anyone who says that Sheryl is fantastic!
Too bad the ending is pretty lame, they crowded most of the things in it but didn’t manage to make a suitable ending…it was rather more like a beginning…another series who blew it with the ending.
And I must say I don’t like Ranka’s voice too much,so sorry for the singer but her voice is not that impressive…the only song that I liked more how she sang it was the one that was continuously repeated till we got bored of it too.And well to see the difference listen to the both versions of “What about my star”…Sheryl’s and Ranka’s…I found the one of Ranka annoying and her voice is not so powerful and deep,I prefer a voice who seems more refined and deeper like Sheryl’s.
