Kurogane no Linebarrels Vol. 1-4

Decided to check the manga out after watching the promos and finding out some generous Anon scanlated volumes 1 till 4. Man, this manga is definitely kick-ass. I sure didn’t expect it to be this entertaining, since I thought it was another typical shounen-style manga.

While it’s definitely falling square inside the shounen-manga story archetype, the characters make a whole world of difference here. The lead character, Koichi Hayase, isn’t a pussy at the least, heck, he’s the direct opposite of one by being an arrogant bastard and a gung-ho type. He even actually flaunts the fact he has a personal giant mecha around to try and impress the girls, LOL. Sure is pretty darn refreshing for a change of pace.

The other fellow mecha pilots are generally quite normal though. We have the usual cool and calm type and the do-gooder type with a little variation in the form of the tsundere-type and shy-type twins, who are also gender-bendering, heh. Of course, there’s also Noto-sama(god damn it, I keep reading her lines with Noto-sama’s voice already) the engimatic female lead of Emi Kizaki as well to provide the (very little) romantic tension in the manga. The character development is also rather expected though, coming in the form of the “I don’t like that idiot” at first only to be impressed by his actions later.

Now I am kinda dreading the anime though. I really gotta stop reading a manga title whenever the anime is announced, it makes things hard when the producers decide to mess things up with the story. Since the anime is a Gonzo production, there’s already a 50% chance it’d be fucked up. But the anime sure has a weird combination of traits, with Ali Project music, Hisashi Hirai character designs (oh god GSD/Fafner redux?!) and Noto-sama in it(!). Wonder what it’ll turn out to be.

Kurogane no Linebarrels

Oh man, I sure can’t wait to hear this line being spoken out. Noto-sama kakkoii yo Noto-sama!

I sure hope the generous and awesome Anon that released Vol. 1-4 will follow up with Vol. 5 onwards. I hate cliffhangers. Correction, I hate reading myself in to cliffhangers ;_;.

P.S. Rewatching the trailers again gives me a feeling that Gonzo’s gonna totally start with an original plot of their own for the series. I mean, Hayase lying down beside a naked Kizaki NEVER happened in the manga… or does it? Also gonna have to add that Hisashi Hirai’s art is total rape of the original manga art. Sigh.

I’ll tell you to NOT expect too much so you won’t get disappointed. If it turns out good then it’s all well, rather than you expect it to be great but ends up of lower caliber then gets disappointed. So don’t set yer expectations yet and stop reading the manga to avoid comparing the anime, do that after you watched it…..don’t tell me you finished it already XD

Character design by… wha? Nononono… Oh heavens no…
Sure, it worked in Gundam Seed, but all series with his designs all looked as if they had the GS cast but with different haircolors… it’s an art style too recognizeable… and too associated with cold hard blistering FAIL.
And oh Gonzo, what is wrong with the original art style? What hath thy poor mangaka done to deserve this shun?

I won’t say I know how it will turn out, but I can say I won’t be hopeful. If I will pick up the title, it will probably be the manga.

I have less disappointment with that style then what happened with ToraDora.

“Hayase lying down beside a naked Kizaki ”
Lol, is that a bad thing?

Guess I should read up on the manga, premonition of a firestorm foretold. While I expect criticism I hope fan’s can think deeper rather than just point out external changes, in most cases it is a retelling of an alternative route arriving at the same conclusion.

“Character design by… wha?” Maybe it would be better if we just hope for Hisashi Hirai to retire sooner.

Just read the first volume and everything about him just reeks of Shinn-Asuka from GSD. Arrogant, over confident and a self proclaim righteous prick. Not even mentioning his first encounter with Mori, there isn’t any redeeming quality from what I’ve read. I at least hope he can mature throughtout the later volumes.

He somewhat redeems himself by becoming a “nice” guy in th later chapters, well it did cost him a very important thing. I don’t wanna spoil the others who haven’t read it yet so I’ll stop there. We’ll see if the anime will follow the GSD path or not, we’ll just see.

Not really. There is much more to that shot than is let on.. I certainly was still surprised when I get to that point. :P

Context is a wonder thing. :X

    On another note, thanks for the pointer Kurogane. was an interesting enough series to look through and I guess at least check out now even if it is gonzo ^^;

Well, Kouichi may appear to be an arrogant hardass, and probably mostly is that, but if you read a bit farther, you might find that he is a bit more than that, and either way, his mecha still kicks major ass, and the Verdant mecha and his factor is also majorly cool, with the way it and he fights.
