“Last Frontier”

  • More 111th Fleet flashbacks. Ranka definitely summoned the Vajra that attacked the fleet. Grace is terribly injured in the attack which results in her hatred of the Vajra.
  • Ozma returns back to the wreckage of the 111th fleet to retrieve back the surviving research data. They find out about Grace’s paper on the combination of implants + Vajra’s zero-time fold network, surmising that it will solve the communication lags but whoever controls the root node will control the galaxy if everyone is implanted. Ozma and the rest decide to not let it happen.
  • Sheryl is confirmed to be Mao Nome’s grand-daughter, from the surviving personal letters Cathy finds in the wreckage.
  • Frontier warps out near the Vajra planet. Operation details are relayed to all forces. The plan is to break through the Vajra encirclement then drop Island 1 and the remaining Islands on to land while the military takes care of the Queen (the big-eye shaped formation) at the same time.
  • Before the operation begins, Alto visits Sheryl to promise her that he’ll return from the battle and he states to her that he finally realises that people cannot fly alone. Sheryl gives Alto a very passionate kiss. Alto tries to reply, but Sheryl stops him, saying that if he says it now, she won’t be able to sing anymore. Sheryl tells him to save Ranka and sends him off with her remaining earring (oh noes!!!).
  • The battle commences. Sheryl begins with “Iteza Gogo Kyuji Don’t Be Late”. The Frontier forces have the upper hand at the beginning.
  • Leon orders the Islands to be dropped to the planet as they have the upper hand. Slave Brera makes Ranka sing to reorganize the scattered Vajra forces, most ironically using “Ai Oboeteimasuka” as the catalyst. Grace comes face-to-face with the true Vajra Queen while this happens.
  • The Frontier forces sustain much losses. Alto is angered by Ranka’s action. Brera emerges to face him off, telling him to lay his hands off her younger sister. Alto loses the first round and Klan takes over, but Brera dispatches her as well.
  • Alto returns back in to the fight, but Brera lands a perfect hit on his unit. It spirals away and explodes. Sheryl goes “ALTOOOOOO!!!!!!!!”
  • Next episode preview: No footage of the show, instead it’s replaced with someone flipping away at a collage of the happier scenes of the series of the three leads. The narration sounds very… “final”.

And so, the penultimate episode of MacF ends with a terrible cliffhanger. I sure didn’t expect Alto to explode up so nicely, especially after he promises Sheryl he’ll definitely be back and technically confessed to her already.

Speaking of that part, that was definitely the scene I have been waiting for all this time to happen, Alto strongly confessing his feelings for Sheryl right before the final battle begins. It’s a bit predictable, but damn, I am thoroughly satisfied with that.

Also, it’s finally confirmed that Sheryl is a true Nome, and she is Mao’s grand-daughter. Of course, that also leaves the question of how she ended up in the trash alleys of Galaxy unanswered.

Well, another week wait for the finale, and that’ll wrap up one of the signature shows of this year. Please please please please please please let Sheryl live. And I hope she also has a new song too. I suspect we’ll just probably get a duet of Aimo, maybe Lion too though.

I was wondering if you have given up or drop ZNT 3 since i see that you havent made posts about it lately since i am curious as to why you stop watching or blogging at all. I know that this has nothing to do with this recent post anyway. Hope you answer as soon as possible based on your opinion. Kurogane.

I can´t say I´m suprised at most of what you´ve written. I still haven´t watched the ep but when thinking back on how Macross series have been well it´s a pretty much given storyline.

And Alto decides to do a Gamlin stunt… who knows how many times his ship blew up and he walked to see another day.

Along with Sheryl being the daughter of Mao Nome. Well that part seems logical, but I do feel that they rushed this to make some stuff up so they could move on.

But oh well. I´m eagerly awaiting the this ep and the final ep next week.

So Alto DID try to shoot Ranka down, since she’s now singing for the Vajra, and ironically using Minmei’s song to do so. The REAL shocker is that Grace wasn’t lying about the earrings being a hand-me-down from Sheryl’s mother, given that she is somehow Mao Nome’s grand-daughter who got abandoned on Galaxy before the 117th Research Fleet died.

And this proves Alto is no Ozma Lee when it comes to death flags; he triggered one with the confession, and then another when he went ahead with his promise to try to kill Ranka despite Sheryl’s suggestion he save her instead.

Will that mean that Alto will appear in a brand-spanking new Valkyrie leading the Emerald Force then? :P

Or they decided to do an anti-Sunrise and actually kill Alto off. (Or at least not pull the leading the charge in a new improved special unit). Sounds like the end duel would be for the SMS group to come back into the fight and have them end it with duel songs.

But this is Macross. Stranger things have happened.

This episode is giving me a lot of Original Macross vibes. Ai Oboeteimasuka, scene in front of giant view port, and the picture book ED.

    P.S.

Hearing Ranka singing “I love you so…” with all the destruction.., should we scribe another law?

Law of Anime #424: Songstress(es), second to evil researchers and academicians, for significant evidences, purges earth, lives, and the galaxy indiscriminately; save no exception clauses, heck, main characters included.

God, now I require the watching of episodes 9-current in order to catch up so I don’t get the ending spoiled. XD

Wonder why in hell I stopped watching all anime save Code Geass R2 halfway during the summer. o_O

@Magnius of the Chaos: I’m actually at the completely opposite end of the spectrum: I am waiting for this to end, so that I can be spoiled properly instead of drowning in tension and then I’ll watch the whole thing in one go. XD

R2 is what I’m watching consistently, but I’m catching up to Xam’d (great so far) and a couple of other things when I’m in the mood.

And now with having watched the ep I wonder what Ai did to Ranka, and how did Grace enter into Ranka´s mind?

Accusing her, showing her memories probably altered by Grace herself. If she is so intrested in the vajra fold quarz then it wouldn´t be no suprise to me if she made an experiment, got injuried in the process since she couldn´t controll it and BAAM, blame the whole thing on Ranka to get her to be more easy to controll. Along with having Brera under controll as well…

Rushed ending is rushed. But since this is Macross I have no doubt that Alto survived. You know the whole “no body = no death” thing. Yes I know it´s usually Sunrise who does that, but thinking back to macross 7 and Gamlin well…

Do you remember love is quite a perfect song for the occasion. Humans are filled with anger and the vajra is only fighting to defend their home. In regard this time around the humans are the aliens trying to exterminate the species that are natural to the planet to take over…

oh well. One last ep to go. Makes you wonder how they will patch this together.

so Grace chosen Sheryl to be her test subject maybe because she is Mao Nome’s granddaughter. If Sheryl is a real Nome then she would have some kind of power in her voice as well, like to control the bird human. Maybe Sheryl will summoned the bird human like Sara Nome did.

  15. Jounin Said,

    September 20, 2008 @ 6:12 am

Whatever Alto was thinking during that scene, Sheryl might have thought that he truly loved Ranka instead (because of what she overheard) and was only being with her out of pity (because of her terminal illness) and didn’t want to risk hearing that or else she wouldn’t be able to sing.

And upon closer inspection of the scene where Alto shouts Ranka’s name and we see through the huge projection’s eye, it looks like Ranka might be held either on that Galaxy ship that is approaching the planet or Battle Galaxy that might be nearby. Right before we see a bound Ranka we see what looks like a bridge of a ship. I don’t know if Alto realizes that Ranka isn’t a tool of the Vajra but a tool for some other human because he seems to wrapped up in his anger to notice much.

  16. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    September 20, 2008 @ 6:18 am

@Jounin: That’s the thing. Alto doesn’t actually have the full picture of things, and he mostly only knows what Bilrer and Leon has revealed to him, which is mostly negative things about Ranka.

To be honest, if Alto’s death is truly final, then I actually feel that it would make for a memorable series at the least. But we’ll see. Who knows, Alto might actually escape because of the fold quartz earring.

    Now that’ll be hax.

  17. Dakkar Said,

Just have watched it… Well, if they don’t trash common sense, then Alto is dead. Still, that’s something hard to believe as Michele’s death looked a way more impressive and he wasn’t the protagonist. Anyway, no matter how it turns out in the end, I would be satisfied with the series provided Ranka finally dies. Yes, she irritates me that much :)

  18. Cat Megex Said,

A comment about the scene with Alto’s Valkyrie exploding: If you notice, Brera’s shot didn’t directly hit the cockpit, and there were a few seconds before his Valkyrie actually exploded; more than enough time to eject, if that blast did indeed just barely miss him.

  19. PaperRedemption Said,

    September 21, 2008 @ 6:04 am

I think I might have an Idea…dealing with the earring that Sheryl gave him…Maybe he folded before it exploded because of the fold crystal.

I just hope I’m not disappointed. 24 felt really rushed, but OMG I loved the SherylxAlto moment.

  20. Haesslich Said,

    September 21, 2008 @ 8:55 am

Paper: In that case, he’s screwed since he has no way out of fold space by himself as that fold crystal only works if there’s equipment to penetrate into hyperspace to work with it… or to leave it.

I just hope Grace gloats to Ranka about killing everyone on Frontier the way Ranka killed the 117th, just to rub her nose in it and to see if she breaks. Or about killing Alto, and taunting her with ‘Oh, you came here for peace but now you’re killing your fellow humans, little Queen. Very, very good job.’.

    Sarah Kerrigan-Ranka end, Confirmed.
