I think the similarities between Tylor and Mat is just a coincidence. Captain Tylor anime was based off of a book series, and the original TV run was in 93 so the books where probably made quite a bit before that. :)

What really disturbing is how similar Tylor is to Mat Cauthon from the Wheel of Time series of books, if you ignore that Mat really is a military genius and doesn’t act the fool (that often), the events of this anime are eerily similar to Mat’s part of the story. Battles won with luck, women becoming infatuated with him, being captured and becoming the toy of the enemy (future-)empress, escaping with the empress in tow, and much more, correspond so well. Alas, the similarities end at episode 22… ’cause there’s no more WoT books to compare it to.

I think that ‘Irresponsible Captain Tylor’ is one of the best anime I’ve ever seen ^^.
