“Fold Fame”

Lion. fucking. rocks. Period.

This song is god damn epic, and the first official duet song by Sheryl and Ranka doesn’t disappoint. The OP sequence that follows it really ups the “epic”ness in to a whole new dimension, and I love how they’re still keeping the “triangle” theme for it too. I seriously hope the show will live up to this new OP.

Damn, the single is only out on the 20th!

Macross Frontier

Sheryl faces off the main boss

We finally found out the mystery illness plaguing Sheryl all this while, V-type Infection. It seems the tablet that Michel picked up and sent to analyze was actually one experimental drug used to treat the condition. Other titbits about the disease is that it’s only contagious via body fluids and blood, so humans rarely get it. The earlier hydra incident on episode 10 is also connected to it. I also remember it being mentioned in Macross Zero too. Otherwise, there’s not much information I can get about the disease other than it being related to Photoshop LOL.

Macross Frontier

Macross Frontier

Yes, Photoshop is bad for health.

It’s revealed as well that Grace picked up Sheryl from the slums and used her as an experimental subject in the V-type Infection research led by Dr. Mao Nome and assisted by Dr. Ranshe Mei(?) as well as hers truly. All the findings, made by Michel and Klan, throw Sheryl in to a state of shock as she becomes aware of her impending mortality but she forbids them to tell Alto about it.

Macross Frontier

After slave-girl C.C, we now have trash-girl Sheryl.

Macross Frontier

Poor Sheryl t.t

She leaves them and wanders alone in the rain, in a daze from the shock. A further blow comes when the Ranka’s role for the impending long-distance fold by the Frontier fleet is announced on TV, and she realizes her fame has been eclipsed by Ranka.

Collapsing in the rain, someone offers her a hand up, which she thinks is Alto, but it turns out to be his elder brother instead. Alto, searching for Sheryl after receiving a heads up from Michel, rushes to meet them, but his brother tells him to go get her at the Saotome manor instead. An emergency call also interrupts Alto from further intervention.

It turns out the Vajra are attacking en masse, and the army with the S.M.S are dispatched to deal with it, but they can’t put much of a dent in to the nuke-immune Vajra. Ranka comes to the rescue with her singing, and thanks to her help, Frontier manages to destroy the Vajra attackers with its main cannon, and immediately they perform the long-distance fold in to the unknown.

Macross Frontier

Damn, it’s true. Ranka’s pantu-less in the decal!

Another build-up episode, and a somewhat-welcome one at that as we finally get some background information on Sheryl, whose past hasn’t been explored much yet. It definitely was a shocker to learn the facts given out in this episode, especially to learn that she has a mysterious disease related back to Macross Zero. Looks like the clone theory is totally whacked now. It also kinda explains how Sheryl got her surname too, she probably got “adopted” by the research team. BTW, Ranshe looks exactly like Sheryl with green hair.

Macross Frontier

The resemblences are striking.

The part in the rain wasn’t as romantic as I had hoped it would be actually, because I kinda expected Alto to come to Sheryl’s rescue, but instead his brother steals the spotlight from out of nowhere, lol. I have to say though, when Sheryl mistook him for Alto… her imagination of Alto sure looked god damned attractive enough to make me consider “bending”, if you know what I mean. Oh god, Alto… :X.

Macross Frontier

Oh god Alto is so hawt

Otherwise, there’s not so much else to talk about Ranka, except for more hints that she is linked with the Vajra when she cries out in pain when Frontier blasted the whole bunch of Vajra in to space dust.

Next week; Frontier successfully folds, meganekko Ranka and Sheryl in kimono.

Ah well – maybe THIS will bring Alto back in enough to reconcile with his family…

The OP is pretty nice and the sequence is amazing eye-candy.. but I like listening to the ED more.

Are you sure Sheryl was used in the research headed by Dr. Mao? I think Sheryl is shown in a paper released by Macross Galaxy a few years after the destruction of the 117th fleet.

I didn’t understand all what either Grace said or Michael and Klan found out but oh well. Have to wait for the sub.

And yet again I have to wait for the next ep.

Big question I want an answer to is why Brera saved Alto? If he doesn’t think Alto is good enough for Ranka then why do he keep on saving his ass?

@Yoo: Even if Dr. Mao didn’t live long enough to be on Galaxy, she definitely was the head researcher of the V-type Infection, so whether she was alive when Sheryl was being used as the experiment or not doesn’t make a difference to the fact that it was based on her work.

@manga: It’s simple, Brera knows Ranka would be devastated if Alto died, and regardless of his own opinions toward him, he probably recognizes the fact that Alto is important to Ranka’s mental health. Wouldn’t want her to relapse back in to zombie Ranka right?

And was that Sheryl sinking into the mud?

I don’t think so. Didn’t look like her. The hair wasn’t long enough. I think it’s actually Brera.

now comes the question who is Sheryl’s parents and how did they get a Varja core for sheryl’s earring?

Sheryl did say she was an orphan and I’m inclined to believe that after seeing the snapshots of her past. The whole story about the earrings was probably a fake story told by Grace to get her to wear the earrings for her experiments or whatever.

Kurogane: Hm, Alto dead, Ranka in despair, her singing is needed. I think I’m more suited for her than Alto…

Kaifun you know :p I’d accept if it were someone else than Brera, but not him.

But yes, that is the reason he saved Alto, for Ranka’s sake. But still it makes him more human than you’d guess about him.

And with that same thought must be why he didn’t kill Ozma. Or is Ozma capable of fighting with androids? So many questions and never any answers.

For why Sheryl has a vajra core, look no further than to the image with Grace, Mao Nome and another girl which is greenhaired and they all belonged to the 117th Convoy… or I should probably say that the green haired chick is Ranka’s mother and since they were researching the vajra you’d think they got the crystals from there and then Grace gave them to Sheryl after the “incident” where the convoy was destroyed by the Vajra, leavning only Ranka and Brera alive.

My two cents anyway. Mix in with some FFVII and Hojo-like experimenting and voila, poor little Ranka got vajra cells in her and now they are starting to react when there are enough casualities for the vajra.

And I do wonder what happened to the eggs from the last ep, we are shown they are still on frontier, but how did they get there after being in the cockpit?

And why is Ai-kun not evolving? I’d guess he’s the king and Ranka is the queen :p

Well I am sure that sparks will fly when Alto-hime goes back home to see Sheryl, hopefully it will be an interesting conversation. Some how I think that Alto-hime’s brother is going to use Sheryl as a means to get Alto-hime to start acting again. If so I approve!

Funny how Sheryl’s ideal image of Alto-hime also includes curves…

Not sure if Grace was the one who gifted the Earrings to Sheryl, maybe all three of them gave Sheryl a gift. Mao gave Sheryl her name, Ransha gave Sheryl the Earrings, and Grace “gave” her fame. Given how Ransha is more connected with the Vajira and how Grace was not fully aware of the abilities of fold Quratz perhaps she did not give them to Sheryl. Given how much Grace really didn’t care I can’t see Grace giving away something that valuable.
