Another World, Tomoyo Chapter

Tomoyo OVA

NOT ENOUGH KYOU. *RAGE*

Erm, so anyways, the Tomoyo OVA is out, and according to trusted sources, it’s the exact replica of Tomoyo’s route in the game, after you’ve eliminated the rest. This sadly explains why we don’t see anyone else in the episode except for Tomoyo.

Basically, the story deals with Tomoyo and Tomoya’s relationship, after they start dating, and because she gets elected as Student Council President, Tomoya the delinquent is “advised” to stay away from her to not drag her down. Thus begins a long emo separation, with Tomoya in despair most of the episode, while Tomoyo works hard and crazy to fulfill her duties and to to preserve the sakura trees on the hill. Finally, Tomoya manages to graduate properly and even finds a job at a recycling company, and Tomoyo manages to fulfill her dreams, so they both return to each other’s arms.

Granted, Tomoyo is still awesome on her own, but god damn, Tomoya was such a useless lamer in this episode. Hell, he’s like totally different from the Tomoya in the TV series, which to me, had some GAR in it, but this Tomoya… let’s just call him the “trash guy”. Sigh, emo episode is emo.

The best part of this episode has gotta be Sunohara in black hair! LOL. That was surely unexpected.

Tomoyo OVA.

… and okay, I guess the last part in the snow was very pretty as well, but still… :X

Well that was quick. The adaptation is in no way surprising (note my own comments in Jason’s recent playthrough of Tomoyo’s route), but it really does put forth how much ‘stand alone’ each of the girls’ routes were in the original game.

Alright Tomoyo is awesome!!! I don’t think Tomoya was that bad though. His actions have some merit to them.

And Kyou is way too overrate, tch just because she looks hot. This qoute from someone who is not me that kind of explains why I’m not all gaga over Kyou. Er I don’t hate her either though.

“Delicious thigh meat, my shapely arse it is. In real life, Kyou would probably be the first girl I’d have strangled out of sheer annoyance. Set your sister up with a guy you secretly like. Cute. Steal said guy from your sister, after the two have been dating for a while, and going so far as to pretend you’re the said twin sister. Not Cute. Not cute at ALL.

Thanks, I’d take bland and normal over an insincere (to herself and to others), two-faced (tsundere? HAH), and irresolute marshmallow who hides behind a tough front. And otaku find that cute? ~_~”

@wolfx: no, this is an alternate dimension story
@flame: Definately you never seen the cute side of her in the novel. Whatever you said about her, she always put Ryou’s happiness above all else. A moment of selfishness maybe, but even Ryou knows that she honestly would die for her. And it does not help that Ryou is too shy to do it herself. For me she’s better than Tomoyo who wants to be the best but is insecure in her decisions. She tried to emulate someone else when the best thing for her is to be herself.
Anything said, this episode is too emo. Not even a kiss. Even Nagisa managed to kiss Tomoya in the end, to which I prefer her really. Even when she is sick, she still strive to fulfill her dream.

“Definately you never seen the cute side of her in the novel.”

You call it cute, i call it being insecure. And yes, Kyou stayed being insecure even in the end.

“she always put Ryou’s happiness above all else.”

Just as Ryou used her, Kyou used Ryou as well. It would be okay if she did setup Ryou and Tomoya out of the goodness of her heart but no, she did it so that she doesnt have to deal with her feelings, using Ryou as a shield.

“Tomoyo who wants to be the best but is insecure in her decisions”

Tomoyo never wanted to be the best, she only wants to be loved. Why did she want to be Student Council President? For her little brother, to save the Cherry Blossom trees that they spent time with.

“Not even a kiss. Even Nagisa managed to kiss Tomoya in the end”

In the anime, Nagisa and Tomoya still havent kissed. If you actually read the VN, Tomoyo and Tomoya shared alot of it.

“Even when she is sick, she still strive to fulfill her dream.”

And like Nagisa, Tomoyo gave it her all. She didnt want to give up on her goal and she certainly didnt want to give up on Tomoya. Even though it was slowly destroying her.

If you LOL’ed at Sunohara with his hair undyed, rest assured there’ll be plenty more in After Story.

Interesting, the arrogant nameless Student Council guy that told Tomoya to back off is voiced by none other than Fukuyama “Lelouche” Jun. Perhaps one explanation why Tomoya behaved so “lamely” was because he got Geass’ed to stay away from Tomoyo? xD

Is it alright if prefer this OVA to all of the TV series?

Because honestly I feel it covered the emotions the TV series did in just 1 episode. And it had all the Tomoyo screentime I need.

Though I will agree it lacks the other characters entirely (except Sunohara)….thus the atmosphere feels kind of dead.

  14. FlameStrike Said,

    @linkinstreet
Well Kuruze already covered it, but yeah. Kyou didn’t really put Ryou’s happiness above her own, she was just too cowardly to confess her love herself and thought it would be fine to pair Ryou up with Tomoya. Her line of thought was sometheing like, “Ryou gets to be happy with Tomoya, and I get to be his friend still, win-win!” Then when Ryou and Tomoya kiss she’s all “OMG THIS ISN’T FINE AFTER ALL QQ I WANA BE TOMOYA’S LOVA!” She’s a hypocrite haha. Kyou was even the one who told Nagisa to “Be more selfish or you’ll never get anything” yet here she is sacrificing her love/giving it up because she’s too scared of rejection.

Heh then Kyou wanted to try and use Sunohara so she could stay close to Tomoya. That’s pretty rude/insensitive to his feelings, I mean what if Sunohara really DID like Kyou and she was just using him? Good thing Sunohara’s a good guy at heart and talked some sense into her (And later Tomoya too). Oh yeah Tomoya in Kyou/Ryou’s route is a big idiot too. At least in Tomoyo’s route Tomoya saw his own weakness/faults, picked a path that hurt himself but was best for Tomoyo, then reconciled their relationship. In Kyou’s route Tomoya was really annoying, he was all “OMFG WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!?! QQ” screaming about his pain all the time when the answer was so obvious even Sunohara knew what to do. Tomoya seemed ooc in Kyou/Ryou’s route, but maybe that was because of Kyou’s influence. It’s kind of annoying how Ryou and Kyou ended up using each other in Kyou’s route but since they’re all nice people it worked out. I used to like Kyou a lot and was all “OMG THIGH HIGHS

Your making kyou out to be some sort of bitch. The situation was complicated but i think in the end she chose ryous happyness above her own. Which is why she started to stay out of there relationship unlike she originally planned. Which is the reason why she pushed herself to go out with sunohara, so she could stop having romantic moments with tomoya.

  17. Kuruze Said,

“Your making kyou out to be some sort of bitch.”

She already proved it herself that she is one in Tomoyo’s route, In her own route, and in her side story.

    “The situation was complicated”

And who do you think made it complicated? Certainly not Ryou, maybe some for Tomoya, but it was Kyou who forced the two to get together. Disagree with her and reject Ryou’s confession and she bitches around blaming Tomoya for not forcing himself to like someone he barely knows.

“i think in the end she chose ryous happyness above her own”

Because it was convenient for her. Besides, if anyone chose someone’s happiness above her own in this route, it would be Ryou. She gave her sister a “go” and let her switch places.

“Which is why she started to stay out of there relationship unlike she originally planned”

She started to stay out because she couldnt bear to see Ryou and Tomoya together.

“Which is the reason why she pushed herself to go out with sunohara, so she could stop having romantic moments with tomoya”

She pushed herself to go out with Sunohara because she needed a cover story due to the rumors spreading about her relationship with Tomoya, plus it serves as a link to him. Just according to her keikaku. Too bad Sunohara didnt agree with it.

You can also take it to account that the route was a poorly written trainwreck by Kai, a relatively inexperienced newcomer, so it being shitty is understandable.

Haha, I don’t know why the discussion turns into whether Kyou is a nice character or not. LOL. Well, anyone who doesn’t Kyou. I apologize because I really like Kyou a lot. You guys can call me shallow because I never play the visual novel game. I just watched the TV series and read her summary in wikipedia. I won’t argue with you guys whether she is a good character or not because everyone has their own opinion. Beside I still haven’t play the game so I don’t think I can defend her honor since I still don’t have much knowledge as you guys.

Back to the Tomoyo OVA, I really like this OVA a lot. Even though, I prefer it to be longer like 2 or 3 episodes long. The block for the train thing was really nice symbolic for Tomoya beling alone at that moment. The snow moment at the end was just awesome. The only minor thing I prefer is that since this is Tomoyo chapter. I thought it will be better if they use Tomoyo after song as for the opening song. I mean they just use Clanad theme song where none of other characters appear but that’s just minor thing.

Seriously, I think you Kyou bashers need to give her a break. The choices she had to make were not easy ones, and I am pretty sure that she, Ryou or Tomoya could not predict the following outcome. It’s very easy to look at the situation from a bystander’s point of view and criticize what is wrong and right, but being a part of the actual conflict with emotions running high is a totally different story.

I do acknowledge that Kyou is insecure and she does not wish to be hurt, but I find that flaw makes her more real. So as pushing her feelings aside so that it won’t interfere with Ryou and Tomoya’s relationship was a very human reaction. I think many people can relate to her feelings and sympathize with her. I do not believe the three of them could have predicted the love triangle in the end.

@Flamestrike: I really think you’re overgeneralizing the whole thing in your first statement, and should not give out misleading information. In the visual novel, she did not “steal” Tomoya from Ryou. It was ultimately Tomoya’s decision on who he really liked. She pretended to be her twin sister to find out from his mouth who he wanted because Ryou ran away out of fear of the impending result.

@Kuruze: I found not misleading but conflicting information in what you said. In your statement of how Ryou did not make the situation “complicated”, I have to disrepute you on that. It is stated clearly in the novel that Ryou knew Kyou’s feelings about Tomoya from the beginning, but she asked Kyou to help her get closer with him.

Ah yes about the Tomoyo OVA, I enjoyed it immensely. Sure Tomoya acted emoish in the second half, but I found it justified since he had to make a hard decision. I can personally attest to how harmful rumors can be, enough to break a person. It was pretty much guaranteed that Tomoyo would have failed her goal if he continued to go out with her because of his reputation as a delinquent and their constant rule-breaking rendezvous. The snow scene was very pretty. =D

Kyou hate, in this blog post’s comments of all places? Not to steer more off topic here, but you guys hating on her need to read up on the updated translations for Kyou’s route. You may have misunderstood lots of stuff. On the other hand, if you know Japanese fairly well, please help out in correcting some of the possible errors in the Baka-Tsuki translation.

Anyway, the Tomoyo OVA was good. My only qualms with it is that they cut out all the fun parts, leaving only the emo stuff and lots of angst. There goes Tomoyo’s Perfect COmbo. Oh well, I guess it couldn’t be helped, no thanks to time constraints.

“She already proved it herself that she is one in Tomoyo’s route, In her own route, and in her side story.”
No you just like to twist the story to make it seem like she is.
“And who do you think made it complicated? Certainly not Ryou, maybe some for Tomoya, but it was Kyou who forced the two to get together. Disagree with her and reject Ryou’s confession and she bitches around blaming Tomoya for not forcing himself to like someone he barely knows.”
Cant argue that kyou made the situation complicated. But she obviously didnt mean to, that dosent make her a bitch.
“Because it was convenient for her. Besides, if anyone chose someone’s happiness above her own in this route, it would be Ryou. She gave her sister a “go” and let her switch places.”
Because it was conveninet for her? Wtf?
“She started to stay out because she couldnt bear to see Ryou and Tomoya together.”
Yes thats another reason. But mainly because she didnt want to get closer to tomoya and make things worse for everyone.
“She pushed herself to go out with Sunohara because she needed a cover story due to the rumors spreading about her relationship with Tomoya, plus it serves as a link to him. Just according to her keikaku. Too bad Sunohara didnt agree with it.”
Yes exactly, she needed to stop those rumours because it was bad for everyone. Bad for kyou because she actually does like him, bad for tomoya because he actually likes her (and the rumour is true they really did kiss), and bad for ryou because she is already starting to feel that kyou and tomoya should be together.
“You can also take it to account that the route was a poorly written trainwreck by Kai, a relatively inexperienced newcomer, so it being shitty is understandable.”
*Slaps* This was one of my faviouret arcs key has ever made! Not just becasue of kyou but because of the storyline being so down to earth and complicated!

Im starting to think you havent read kyous arc properly at all because half of what ur saying is totally misguided.

You guys are being retarded anyways.

I don’t care about the game Kyou, since I’ve never played CLANNAD (although I’ve read enough spoilers to know the story). My full allegiance is to the anime Kyou, and she’s more than awesome enough for me in it.

While I know they’re the same person, but there is a huge distinction between the anime version and the game/novel version.

Kyou is awesome in both the anime and the game.
Finished Kyou’s route yesterday and I like it A LOT.
I like it better than the other arcs because Kyou’s arc deals with real life issues.
The things that usually happens in relationships. Not fake ones.
There are lots of reasons why to love Kyou.

Anyway, Tomoyo is awesome. And I never knew that she was so moe.
But Kyou still remains my favorite. ^_^
