Mylene is the character I was the most disappointed in because: 1. She nags Basara every chance she gets. 2. She is the offspring of Miria and Max. Why is she so useless in this series?! 3. She is indecisive when it comes to Basara and Gamlin. Basara is a stupid bastard. Pick Gamlin.

I loved Gamlin because he thought exactly the same way I did. “Get out of here! This is a battle! Stop singing!” I loved him so much. But I have only watched to episode 11, so I hope that they don’t make him stupid. He’s GAR when he’s a pilot but he goes all softie when he’s with Mylene so I was rabu-rabu about that.

Main complaints about this series. They use Mylene as fan service, she is fourteen years old. That’s just wrong. The clothing looks like utter shit. Basara’s fucking hair pisses me off and I hate it. Maybe if he didn’t look like he was copying Sousuke Sagara from Kenshin, he wouldn’t make feel COMPLETE hatred for him. The music is irritating. I hate that Saturday Night Song. Most of the “singing voices” are annoying, they should have hired someone else. The instruments look weird. I know this show is set in the “future” but god, why would you ruin the look of guitars (i.e. Mylene’s crappy bass axe.)

I just wish Basara would stop singing the same damned song for around 20 episodes in a row. They could easily have cut a fair amount of episodes out.

Also, which Macross series was it, that featured the light-brown and navy blue colored Valkyrie units, that could perform a point blank PUNCH with funky green glows on their fists? I’ve been wanting to watch it, in order to appreciate their wacky punch attacks in SRW@3, and their upcoming Revoltechs.

Macross Plus sunk in terms of sales/popularity in Japan whereas Macross 7 had sky high naruto-esque ratings in Japan.

I think Kawamori tried to do some “Culture Shock” here. LOL.

That said though, M7 should be watched only because its canon in the Macross universe, and Basara’s singing voice, is Fukuyama from JAM Project. It definately would’ve been better if Kawamori wasn’t smoking his Gaia cigars and stuffing his whole Arjuna idealogy into it.

The direction also suffers in the early episodes very remeniscent of the old classic anime formula of “attack of the week” and enemies retreating “i’ll get you next time”. I wonder if this is due to pressure from sponsors to make it a full fledged 49 episode anime to sell Fukuyama’s music when plot could’ve really just made it a 13-26 episode anime.

Kurogane: M7 is hard to get into, but if you plan on dumping the show, i recommend you at least watch the standalone Encore OVA episodes, M7 Movie: The Galaxy Is Calling Me, and M7 Dynamite OVAs. Those are really decent and i think more or less gives u the jist of M7 without hurting your tolerance level.

I recommend the Macross Compendium to get the part of the story of Macross 7 that will be referenced in Frontier if any does not want to see the series. I bet there is important connections, as was in Macross Zero.

The things that made shows like Macross and Gundam stand out were their focus on “realistic” characters and mechs. The VF-1 was designed in a fashion that seems almost real. It looks like a plane. When it transforms, you can see what goes where, and how it moves. There’s no magical flash of light, no fighting spirit. The idea of converting the Zentraedi by introducing them to culture was innovative and fun. Macross Plus continued the fantastic mechanical design and Sharon Apple makes for an awesome villain.

Macross 7 comes along and throws it all away. Forgetting that it’s a Real Robot show, the custom Valkyries have faces. That’s retarded. They defeat their enemies with MAGICAL ENERGY FIGHTING SPIRIT ETC. They might call it Song Energy and reference Minmay, but in the end, defeating an enemy by introducing them to culture via song and defeating an enemy by producing some magical energy via song are completely different. Not to mention Protodeviln is a stupid, stupid name.

Nothing could make me happier than for them to ret-con Macross 7 into a TV-show inside the overall continuity. Nothing. I never want to see valkyries with faces, Song Energy, or the Protodeviln in my Macross again. Ever.

Exactly. Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto + Macross = pure WIN. And if you like Yoko Kanno’s tunes for Frontier, her Plus music will wreck you! They managed to make something really delivers in both the action and heart-wrench departments without including a massive space war in the plot.
