Macross 7 is trash.

How the fuck people actually like this show? I got brain damaged just by watching the first 3 episodes.

Right, now I know why Nekki Basara is legendary. This show is legendarily stupid. Might’ve been better if the songs were actually good, but they just sound so god damn generic.

If I see Basara appear in Frontier……..OTL.

Haha, totally, I keep getting annoyed when he interrupts battles by trying to make them GTFO with a song, sad thing is, he kept failing for some time in a row.

Also possibly the first love triangle that has no winner in the end. >.>

    Same songs all over also.

I did manage to watch to 35.

    You should watch Macross Zero.

Good gods, just skip to episode 23 and Macross 5. I just couldn’t stand the series after the first episode! It made me want to shoot my monitor to put it out of it’s misery. And burn the speakers to purify them of that evil.

On another note, GODS DAMN IT! WOULD YOU BASS-PUMPING NIMRODS STOP PLAYING YOUR MUSIC AT HYPER-HIGH LEVELS AT 1 IN THE MORNING!?

    Huh?

Oh well. To each his own.

I enjoyed M7. Much more so because of the music. Try to listen to “Pillow Dream” by Mylene´s seiyuu, got more in common with Diamond Crevasse than most other songs. Or I just wish that Mylene could have been singing more, I think you´d have a different opinion then Kurogane :p

lez: I think there is 52 episodes of Macross 7, try finding one music related anime that has that many songs. Sofar I haven´t been able to find one where each new ep is a new song.

It took me three goddamn tries before I got into Macross 7, but once I did, I became rather engrossed with the show and by the end of the series, I could safely say that I liked and enjoyed the ride. But I admit, the early episodes are really tough to get through, especially when the episodes seem to repeat each other and Basara keeps singing “Planet Dance” (I like Totsugeki Love Heart though) But after the first 10 episodes, things get better. Basara gets new songs, the characters really start to grow on you, and the main plot actually starts to move with things getting even sillier (and the show is all the better for it). Though honestly the animation budget doesn’t get any better, get ready to watch the same planes get blown up throughout the series.

Macross 7 is very divisive, you either like it or you don’t, nothing in between. It is Macross at its silliest, and the show knows it, Macross has never been and should never be an entirely serious franchise anyway, that’s the fun of it. In the end, the key to enjoying the show is to accept the silliness and go with the flow. If anything, watch the episode “The Fleet of Strongest Women”, it is probably the silliest episode of them all, subverting the original Macross and definitely one of my favourite Macross episodes ever.

First time I saw it, I admit to have quite a lot harsher words than you for M7, but some 8 years later (quite recently) I decided to give it another shot and got pretty hung up. Sure, I loved the soundtrack from beginning to end, I suppose it helps, but the characters are pretty well developed, and there´s a beautiful yet somewhat strange story on it.

Also, the plot is quite “important” on the Macross universe, it deepens on the Protoculture, the Supervision Army, the Superdimension, and all the stuff that WILL get its share in Macross Frontier, so at least, I will recommend that you try a little harder just to appreciate Frontier in its whole amazingness!

Also, thanks a lot for the blog and the time you take writing on it, I greatly enjoy it and look forward to new posts every morning :-)

lol i only watched cos it was a ‘macross’

maybe instead of 52, 13 or 24 episodes. heh

too bad that not all animes that have plenty episodes have a decent material(or most of them imo) =(

Some of these comments make me think that I should give M7 another shot, I never finished (barely started) and I was really influenced by all the people saying how crappy it was. But I just watched the movie version of Plus for the first time and I’m afraid that’s really gonna make it seem bad.

Which reminds me… have you watched Plus yet? Now *that* is the real deal.

Yes, “The Fleet of Strongest Women” is hilarious. If you thought seeing the male Zendroti going crazy for Minmay was funny, wait until you see the females going all fangirl over Basara. “Minmay Attack”…apply directly to bridge. (Plus minor M and M joint action in the flavor of the Hase tactic, minus baby.)

Mah~ I dropped it after episode 2, it’s like he’s imitating Minmay it’s just that he’s a guy and doesn’t sing that good T___T Also playing SRW Alpha 3 was a pain with the story related maps with Basara not dying, he got like no offensive attacks at all, oh wait if you include bad singing at that, he has one hahaha sorry bout the SRW rant ^^

You best be joking man, cuz in SRW@3 Basara and his band was a must deploy for the fact that it could raise the morale of your units extremely fast.

Aside that, M7 was utter crap to me. In fact, I have only liked the original and the new Frontier in all the franchise

I got the idea that Macross Plus was marketed to “revive” the Macross fandom “preparing” them for Macross 7, just as Macross Zero did with Macross Frontier. Sadly, Macross Plus is just SO good, it shadows everything in its path, and as such M7 fell into a ulawful comparison.

For those who did not watch Macross Plus, let´s just say that it´s the Cowboy Bebop team warming up. If that does not get you on… I don´t know what can!

Ryggim: It´s actually said in the very first chapters that Basara is trying to follow Minmai´s steps.

And the whole band re-enacts Hikaru and Minmai role (played by Basara and Mylene) in a re-make of DYRL. That movie (the original) is supposed to be a movie filmed after the incidents as a novelized fiction, a romantiziced documentary. Though most of the things that appear in later Macross give credit to the movie rather than the TV version, but I thinks it´s just a matter of separating Robotech from the rest of the Macross franchise.

I watched Macross Plus, liked it for the same reasons I like Macross 7: The music, love triangle and characters.

Same with the original, same with macross zero, same with macross frontier.

I do have some shows in between Macross and Macross Plus to cover, but if they are as intresting as these series have been lately then I have nothing to fear.

macross plus was originally intended to be a seperate series. The studio balk at the budget until it was represented as a part of the Macross universe.

I’m with Tomás: “For those who did not watch Macross Plus, let´s just say that it´s the Cowboy Bebop team warming up. If that does not get you on… I don´t know what can!”

Exactly. Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto + Macross = pure WIN. And if you like Yoko Kanno’s tunes for Frontier, her Plus music will wreck you! They managed to make something really delivers in both the action and heart-wrench departments without including a massive space war in the plot.

I watched Macross 7 and hated it. I can honestly say I wish it had never been made. To each their own, I guess. The songs were entertaining at first, but they got annoying after awhile. The faces on the valkyries were stupid, as is the Sound Force in general.

The things that made shows like Macross and Gundam stand out were their focus on “realistic” characters and mechs. The VF-1 was designed in a fashion that seems almost real. It looks like a plane. When it transforms, you can see what goes where, and how it moves. There’s no magical flash of light, no fighting spirit. The idea of converting the Zentraedi by introducing them to culture was innovative and fun. Macross Plus continued the fantastic mechanical design and Sharon Apple makes for an awesome villain.

Macross 7 comes along and throws it all away. Forgetting that it’s a Real Robot show, the custom Valkyries have faces. That’s retarded. They defeat their enemies with MAGICAL ENERGY FIGHTING SPIRIT ETC. They might call it Song Energy and reference Minmay, but in the end, defeating an enemy by introducing them to culture via song and defeating an enemy by producing some magical energy via song are completely different. Not to mention Protodeviln is a stupid, stupid name.

Nothing could make me happier than for them to ret-con Macross 7 into a TV-show inside the overall continuity. Nothing. I never want to see valkyries with faces, Song Energy, or the Protodeviln in my Macross again. Ever.

Macross 7 NEVER HAPPENED. NEVER HAPPENED. Next thing you’re going to tell me that the Matrix was a trilogy and that they made a Rocky V

@beamKnight yeah I know that, I just hated the scenarios where he’s isolated or showed up in front of lotsa enemies away from your troops thing. It kinda pisses me off that he has such a low HP and def in the beginning but that’s the challenge for SRW for you. Overall I worship the game for the sole reason Voltes V and Combatler V has a double attack ^________^ The Gundams are another reason hehehe

Sigue: Sorry but the “anima spiritia” from Macross 7 was ret-conned (is that a verb?) in Macross Zero and made the pivotal element in the Macross series. I surely disliked the faces on the valkyries, but then I thought “what if Mick Jaeger had a transformable plane? would it have a face?” and I got to sleep quieter from then on :-P

I recommend the Macross Compendium to get the part of the story of Macross 7 that will be referenced in Frontier if any does not want to see the series. I bet there is important connections, as was in Macross Zero.

Sigue: Weird, I see faces all over the Macross series on the mecha. Ears, eyes, sure not the mouth that shows up in Macross 7 but either way it´s faces.

So why are you bashing M7 for having faces on the mecha when the others have it as well? Just curious.

Song energy was present in Macross Zero and from the looks of it, they haven´t said anything about it yet but Ranka seems to have some powerful singing energy…
All about how you look at things.

But hey, to each his/her own.

Just to throw some perspective into M7 haters….

Macross Plus sunk in terms of sales/popularity in Japan whereas Macross 7 had sky high naruto-esque ratings in Japan.

I think Kawamori tried to do some “Culture Shock” here. LOL.

That said though, M7 should be watched only because its canon in the Macross universe, and Basara’s singing voice, is Fukuyama from JAM Project. It definately would’ve been better if Kawamori wasn’t smoking his Gaia cigars and stuffing his whole Arjuna idealogy into it.

The direction also suffers in the early episodes very remeniscent of the old classic anime formula of “attack of the week” and enemies retreating “i’ll get you next time”. I wonder if this is due to pressure from sponsors to make it a full fledged 49 episode anime to sell Fukuyama’s music when plot could’ve really just made it a 13-26 episode anime.

Kurogane: M7 is hard to get into, but if you plan on dumping the show, i recommend you at least watch the standalone Encore OVA episodes, M7 Movie: The Galaxy Is Calling Me, and M7 Dynamite OVAs. Those are really decent and i think more or less gives u the jist of M7 without hurting your tolerance level.

H… how can you haet Macross 7? It has Basara in it, and Basara is awesome. He’s simply amazing in any SRW games that have him in it ┐( ¯3¯)┌

Also, which Macross series was it, that featured the light-brown and navy blue colored Valkyrie units, that could perform a point blank PUNCH with funky green glows on their fists? I’ve been wanting to watch it, in order to appreciate their wacky punch attacks in SRW@3, and their upcoming Revoltechs.

It’s not a bad show. I enjoyed it because I went in only expecting music and the occasional Macross flagship and VF.

I just wish Basara would stop singing the same damned song for around 20 episodes in a row. They could easily have cut a fair amount of episodes out.

I hated Basara. He was just a prick that couldn’t sing. I cracked up this one time he was being chased by these biker chix and he was talking to them. He asked one of them if they wanted to hear him sing and the girl said “I’m not interested.” I cried tears of joy and laughter simulatneously. He is a pacifist ( I feel my eyes roll without conscious effort). I am a pacifist but at least I am not being an asshole and interrupting battles with my stupid robot. Why is he a pacifist with muscles? Aren’t muscles usually used for punching people. Another thing that made me hate him so much is that he would attract so much ass but be clueless about it. Like Rex. She actually kissed him and he was clueless. I hate him with a fiery passion.

Mylene is the character I was the most disappointed in because: 1. She nags Basara every chance she gets. 2. She is the offspring of Miria and Max. Why is she so useless in this series?! 3. She is indecisive when it comes to Basara and Gamlin. Basara is a stupid bastard. Pick Gamlin.

I loved Gamlin because he thought exactly the same way I did. “Get out of here! This is a battle! Stop singing!” I loved him so much. But I have only watched to episode 11, so I hope that they don’t make him stupid. He’s GAR when he’s a pilot but he goes all softie when he’s with Mylene so I was rabu-rabu about that.

Main complaints about this series. They use Mylene as fan service, she is fourteen years old. That’s just wrong. The clothing looks like utter shit. Basara’s fucking hair pisses me off and I hate it. Maybe if he didn’t look like he was copying Sousuke Sagara from Kenshin, he wouldn’t make feel COMPLETE hatred for him. The music is irritating. I hate that Saturday Night Song. Most of the “singing voices” are annoying, they should have hired someone else. The instruments look weird. I know this show is set in the “future” but god, why would you ruin the look of guitars (i.e. Mylene’s crappy bass axe.)
