@Myssa Rei: See, Max is awesome. I liked the video game part. She’s basically trying to win and he’s basically checking her out. Of course I’ve still only seen this in the Robotech version. They make a great combat pair. Never get into a space fight against Max and Milia…you will lose.

Surprisingly Robotech was pretty faithful to the Macross part of it. The part you’re talking about was pretty much exactly the same in fact.

I wonder why they always choose this song. Myung’s friend back in Macross PLus was singing this song too. Silver Moon Red Moon, Angel’s Paint and DYRL are far superior to watashi no kare wa pilot.

Macross did make a few changes to the standard formula – namely with how Earth ended up. The ‘winning’ was in the fact the Macross survived, as did the three of them in the triangle. As Xellos pointed out, they went beyond the ‘happily ever after’ to show what really happened, which made it a bit of a deconstruction of the genre up to that point (Gundam wasn’t afraid of killing off main characters, but even THEY had a ‘happy ever after’ for the survivors, until Zeta rolled around).

Myssa Rei: Don’t forget that two of the daughters are adopted. But yes, he is like the proto-Kamina, minus the whiny stage… and he even gets the girl. He was the pilot who believed in the me who believed in himself…

Baby-throwing aside, Komilia (the first daughter) grew up normally enough (I *think* she’s the Meltrandi that’s in the VF-X game).

I do like when the Meltrandi show up in Macross 7. Seeing that many “uncultured” giants go all fangirl is hysterical.

I thought this was actually the most brilliant part of Macross and is what set it apart form other mecha series. Macross’s after war is so far the only mecha series where it shows the aftermath of a war almost immediately after. People are struggling and the intergration of the human and zentraedi is not going smoothly at all. It shows that there is no happliy after. After one battle is finish another battle will come up. Life is never ending and there is no The End.
