Better 25 years late than never

Well, thanks to the awesomeness of Macross Frontier, I’m going back to the roots and starting back on the original series. Better 25 years late than never, eh?

Up till episode 6 now. My impressions?

  1. OMG, the hairstyles. Seriously. Especially Hayase’s. I can live with the old-school cel animation and jerky camera movements, but the horrible, horrible hairstyles nearly threw me off. Even Lynn Minmay wasn’t spared with that double buns she tied her hair in to when they reopened Nyan Nyan.
  2. Hikaru getting cockblocked at the end of episode 4 was damn lol. Especially coming after Minmay went all emo and “Let’s both die in space~!!!!”. Also, TUNA FISHING IN SPACE.
  3. Daedalus Attack was pretty O_O. Actually I half-expected Macross to go “ROCKET PUNCHHHH!!!”. The pinpoint barrier control team is LOL too. Can’t they get it under computer control?
  4. Lynn Minmay… isn’t what I expected her to be. But so far, she’s pretty okay and being a classic character, this is gonna be interesting to watch. But she really is pretty capricious, heh.

Anyways, back to watching.

Yikes, and Kuro gets the retro-blogging bug. The only painful thing about rewatching the original Macross is the fact that, well, it’s easy to see that the series didn’t age well, when compared to the DYRL movie and the Flashback OAV.

Given the timeline though, REALLY, did you expect something else, hairstyle-wise? :P

    > OMG, the hairstyles.

Was there such a thing as a GOOD hairstyle back in the 80’s????

Another victim blown away that scene! Welcome to the club.

    > Lynn Minmay

I didn’t like the tv series version of Minmay at all, but the DYRL version is another story. It’ll be interesting to hear your thoughts when you’re finished.

Now that you’ve seen Giatn Tuna In Space, I’d suggest you go back to episode 4 of Macross Frontier and take a look at what some of SMS personnel are enjoying in the background of the restaurant scene.

@nckl — back in the 80’s, we had COOL hair, y’all. Our parents with their whacked hairdos (beehive for example) was the thing that wasn’t cool. ^_~ Of course today, I look back and think, “Man! What were we thinking?”

As to the original “Macross,” while it may not age well look-wise (and some episodes are worse than others), I rather enjoyed the story. Watching “Macross Frontier” shows how far we’ve come anime-tech-wise. ^_^

I loled at the cockblock as well. Keep watching for more great stuff from the classic.

You WILL hate Minmay. I remember I did, a damn lot.

After you watch the original Macross, you should realize that Macross Frontier doesn’t hold a candle to the original.

You should really check out the movie Macross: Do You Remember Love?. The final battle is one of the most awesome scenes in all of anime history and still sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it.

Try watching Zeta Gundam for 50 episodes and not laughing at the hair styles :V

I see I’m not the only one who watched the old Macross for the first time recently. And yeah, Minmay is a bitch. She’s always a bitch.

A lot of the animation wasn’t exactly fantastic. Though some episodes (episode 18 and 27 if I remember correctly) had some pretty damn good animation. Also, yes it’s true that Minmei is certainly one of the most annoying characters out there.

As for Macross F, it’s an extremely fun show so far, though lacks the fantastic sheer idiocy of some parts of SDF Macross. I expect nothing else from it, though to be fair, I am open minded (heck I even enjoyed Macross 7 except for that period where Basara would sing the same song over and over episode after episode).

Hey now, don’t reveal the anti Minmay coalition just yet, let Kuro find out for himself right? I don’t know about you guys but I love to see other people get annoyed at the things we all perceive as annoying XD

i rly…. love? macross heheh, so the hair styles are pretty acceptable heheh
i mean… art-wise, there`s macross 7 trash, a manga draw by the same person responsible for the character design in the original series(Haruhiko Mikimoto) :3
(ok, i like macross and went through the whole Kimagure Orange Road material, so the art from that time is ok for me haha)

oh well, by saying love… its not that big love maybe XD
i went to a hobby store and went through a few catalogs… and saw it… a VF 1s plamo, black painting and full transformable…. for only 40.000¥or something around that number. so i went home with a zaku(3000¥) OTL

anyway, macross is a nice show, but… u could do fine watching dyrl i think.
i mean… ok its a classic and all, but its like watching macross 7. a few eps that rly matter and lots of fillers(made me feel as bad as trying to watch naruto anime heh)

ah, from that time, u could also try ideon hehe

i watched it last year and was like… lol, weird hair and lots of ppl dying
AND its from the same vintage as macross

… DYRL is basically an in-universe movie which screwed around with the storyline and the character development in order to ‘make things better’… and in doing so, messed up everyone’s characterization. :P

It’s like the goddamned Naruto of Macross series – pretty in some spots, but almost completely devoid of anything of worth. There’s a reason that Kawamori basically said that it didn’t happen for real but it was a propaganda movie made in-universe.

  19. Xellos-_^ Said,

    May 7, 2008 @ 8:48 am

But Haesslich, it is really pretty and is a good break in to the macross universe

  20. Haesslich Said,

    May 7, 2008 @ 10:06 am

Xellos: It’s pretty, but I’d say the music video Flashback 2012 was better for introducing the Macross Universe. Basically, if you thought that was real and accurate… well, you’d be completely screwed later on if anyone told you what REALLY happened, in series and in later shows.

DYRL? is more or less accepted as canon by Kawamori despite what everyone says. In fact its Kawamori’s 1s director of Macross. He wasn’t the creator of the original despite popular belief.
