otou-san: One quote from Army of Darkness explains Minmay's personality transformation real well, as far as I'm concerned:

"You found me beautiful once."
"Honey, you got real ugly."

Xellos — right you are.

Haesslich — I'm with you on every one of those points, although I don't want to talk too much on that for fear of spoiling Kurogane's Macross fun.

At any rate, I think that's what makes Macross F really cool for fans. Seems like they took some elements, events, and character traits from SDF, tossed them in a bucket, shook it around, and poured out the characters we're looking at now. It should keep us guessing while still getting to enjoy a feeling of familiarity.

Ithekro: he has an ego... but he doesn't let it run away with him. He knows he's good, he admits he's pretty good and that Hikaru isn't as good... but doesn't let it get to his head. Which is probably why he and Milia... and I'll stop here before revealing a spoiler.

I remembeed. Max is probably the most awesome side character in anime. Likely the best pilot in the galaxy and he has no ego like most fighter jocks. He's basically "Yeah, its only my job. You do just fine too, commender. Don't worry about it. Oh hey, look at that girl...." -slap myself before spoilers- You'll see. He's that awesome.

otou-san: She's not a bitch... but she did kinda grow spoiled REAL quick over the course of a few episodes. She was childish, she was naive... and then she became a real diva, of the type we saw in Episode 1 of Macross F, minus Sheryl's later-shown redeeming qualities (hard-working, determined, more emotional maturity, professionalism). And then she follows Kaifun's lead, which turns her into an INCESTUOUS diva... and yes, those two did look good together, which is one reason I hate it when people say a pair should be formed because they 'look good together', even though that relationship was as dysfunctional as any in the series.

And Ranka is, for better or worse, not the Miss Macross winner and not currently spoiled. Nor does she have an onii-san complex like Minmay did, nor does she share the same But neither does Sheryl, despite her initial bad impression - both of them combine personality traits of the OTHER competitor for Hikaru, along with their own quirks (Ranka has Misa's self-doubts without the life experiences which tell her she can do well, Sheryl has Misa's hard-working nature but also has her temper).

"All the Minmay haters projecting onto Sheryl should remember how things went down, and take note of who works in a Chinese restaurant in the current series."

And who is currently a officer in the army and not a idol >_>

"Lynn Minmay’s debut performance was okay, but I felt Ranka’s rendition was better. I guess the better production quality edged it out."

Production quality in general isn't awesome in SDF. I remember being really into the space battles as a kid (with Robotech of course), but watching it more recently I realized that a bunch of the space battles are recycled. The same footage will get old fast.

And speaking of that and Minmay, "Watashi No Kare Wa Pilot" will get reeeeeally old pretty soon. But I don't think she's the bitch that everyone makes her out to be. I think one of the things that made it so revolutionary as a show was the sophistication of the characters — Minmay is young, confused, just wants to sing, etc. etc. Wait till Kaifun shows up. What a hippie a-hole.
