I was so far on the edge of my seat I just about fell off the couch. But overall, it's a masterpiece. But it didn't take long for the story and the hard-hitting emotional impact to become the real draw. You’re right about the phone card countdown in episode 10. The artsy look of the series was, instead of annoying, one of the main factors to why it was so engaging (independent movie makers should see it, for the good of all of us). I actually rewatched it only a week after seeing it for the first time, as a friend of mine wanted to see it (probably due to my frequent mentioning of it), which was also good as I saw more details in the story, as well as understanding the ending better. Putting both stories in one was a genial idea- just enough characters, and both stories were bound together in such a way that I didn't demand to see the rest of one story when it jumps to the other. I can only hope someone makes the sequel into an anime as well, and after seeing SHAFT actually create something this good I wouldn't mind it if they were the ones to work on the next one either.
