Both an awesome and disappointing episode. I truly have mixed feelings about this series.

The awesome? Tomoya facing a heaven-hell situation…. with not one, not two, but FIVE girls bringing him food since he got his ass suspended. I really gotta say… it must’ve been quite the effort to eat all those… including Fuko’s starfish delights. Not forgetting too, the Kyou and Tomoyo showdown to make him eat their food. Oh god… I must admit, I was hoping to see an awesome catfight between them both. I think it would’ve destroyed Tomoyo’s house at the least. Ryou dealing a deadly blow to Tomoya, when he hopes she’ll say something to help him was full of LULZ too, as did Kotomi with that oh-so-innocent face of hers.

Following on, Tomoya playing around with Sunohara in the episode was fun too, and that cute face that Sunohara put on at one point in the episode nearly traumatized me. Poor fella deserves mention for taking so many of Tomoyo’s hits though. Tomoyo’s parade of her athletic abilities was fun as well, nothing from gymnastics to kendo doesn’t faze her. No wonder she’s popular amongst the clubs. Must say though, if she wanted to avoid joining them, maybe she should’ve declared something like “aliens, time travellers and sliders to come to her place”. It worked pretty well for a certain someone.

Tomoyo continues to up her awesomeness level, and I’m very much understanding why Guncannon has her as his himegimi. Her backstory this episode is revealed as well as her motivations for becoming the student president. I felt a bit sad for her when during the tennis match, she noticed the chemistry between Nagisa and Tomoya and decided to give up on her feelings.

Speaking on Tomoya, god damn him. He broke three hearts just like that (*snaps fingers*) this episode. While Tomoyo gracefully accepted it, poor Kyou and Ryou ;_;. Which is why this episode was disappointing…. they just ended both Kyou/Ryou’s and Tomoyo’s arcs with this episode. Somehow I think it was just a bit inappropriate to use 「over」 for that part, although the title is quite apt ;_;.

Heaven, hell or both? Poor Tomoya.

Oh wow… getting cornered by both of the most awesome characters in the series. I think I’m a bit jealous of him.

Even Ryou gets aggressive… he’s doomed.

Kotomi and Botan pray for Tomoya’s dear soul.

That’s just wrong Sunohara…. damn wrong.

Tomoya and Nagisa openly declaring their love for each other.

… which is quickly picked up by Tomoyo…

… and she bows out gracefully ;_;.

On the other hand…. Kyou takes it really hard… she’s really fragile inside despite how she usually comes off.

And three hearts are broken on that day…..

Totally expected – since both Kyou/Ryou and Tomoyo’s arc are all very heavily romance focused (they all involve Tomoya going out with the girls romantically by half way into the arc at the latest), there was no way they can even remotely try to work in the arcs in an interweaving manner without making Tomoya looking like Makoto from School Days. As funny as it would be to have NICE DANGO I don’t think it is going to be entirely appropriate.

Don’t worry though, Nagisa’s story more than makes up for all of these (ok maybe not Tomoyo’s arc if Tomoyo After is taken into account), I swear by this as a player of the game.

  8. Kinny Riddle Said,

In the OP, we see the sequence of the five girls being introduced, in the background, we see certain scenes from their storylines. Judging from the fact that Fuuko, Kotomi and Tomoyo now have their scenes fully animated, I still think Kyo-Ani may still be able to stick in some more of Kyou’s story even after Tomoya went for Nagisa.

Already we have the Kyou playing basketball, the other sub-scenes in the OP include Kyou towing her bike toward the sunset while walking with Tomoya.

Well Joe there’s not much they really could have done, since both Tomoyo’s arc and the Fujibashi twins routes HEAVILY I mean really heavily conflict with the main arc. The revalation about Tomoyo’s family also lost alot of it’s impact compared to the sence in the game where Tomoyo and Tomoya are hugging other stuff. They really can’t do much since those arcs need Tomoya and girl romance.

Although I liked the Tomoyo arc ALOT, I still think Nagisa and Tomoya are a better match for eachother heh.

  14. Joe Said,

    February 16, 2008 @ 6:11 am

I have been throught both arcs and i realise that they heavily conflict with the main storyline. But doing tomoyo’s arc first and kyous second would work if they dont end in romance but with like an acceptance that they cant be together or something and that would make way for the nagisa ark. Of course they would need more episodes for that though. Im just gobsmacked that they cut out 70% of my faviouret arcs like that!

Are you 100% positive that Tomoyo is completely out of the race?

She asks where Nagisa and her met and Nagisa explains she’s trying to revive the Theater club. Tomoyo walks away with a tired look.

Now what does it mean? Most people (at least from my 10 minutes of looking around) say she’s giving up on Tomoya, but another way to look at it would be all the worry she’s been having about the Tomoya-Nagisa relationship is for naught. If the reason why they’re so close is because of the Theater club, then there’s a chance that there’s no romantic involvement, yes?

This may also explain why she has that reserved look on her face. Would you, too, after worrying about something you didn’t have to worry about?

Maybe I just like Houko Kuwashima too much, but I think she still has a shot :p.

Ugh disgusting you’re disgusting for thinking poor Nagisa should die, but you’d be surprised. I guess you would like Nagisa’s route (sans lights) tch. However this was a good enough way to do it, kyoani can’t please everyone.

For your information, the winners for key games were announced since the start of the series. For Clannad and even Kanon the point isn’t who the male lead will choose, that’s obvious from the start. Plus they’ve been setting up Nagisa x Tomoya since episode one, it would be really O.o if he suddenly decided to go for another girl randomly. Besides with only 6 eps and Nagisa’s route barely started, I’m more worried about how they’re going to fit the after story in. (Hopeing for a second season).

Hm if your thinking if Tomoya isn’t totally going for the Nagisa end you’re most likely wrong but I don’t believe Tomoyo thinks she has a chance either. I see it as more like Tomoyo thinking “Oh, so him helping me get into the Student Council was all for her sake.”

Although I do like Tomoyo and Kyou better as characters than Nagisa, I fully support Nagisa x Tomoya. They’re a great match heh.

All this mudslinging really disgusts me. I had expected better from Clannad watchers, with the story explicitly leaning towards a Nagisa ending, and now in certain forums we have ignorant fanboys demanding Nagisa dies at once. If they’re so smart, why don’t they go to Kyoto and apply to be the main scenario writer themselves? I’m sure everyone would be happy.

For the record, I prefer the twins slightly over Nagisa, but I would never want the poor girl to die for making Tomoya unconsciously pick her.

I don’t make myself fan of any character in any anime, so I can enjoy then series at it best, without being full of thoughts of someones death or different flow of the story.
Btw, I have been wondering why Tomoya didn’t visit Nagisa then she was ill? Or even why others didn’t visit her?

  29. solgae Said,

    February 17, 2008 @ 9:12 am

If anyone has been following this series since episode 1, anyone would know that Tomoya only really showed feelings for Nagisa. And notice that the guy never even blushes or gets embarrassed even once on situations where any male protagonist from a typical harem-show would have, like the one on the storage room.

The point is that this series is no Rosario+Vampire (not even worth mentioning), True Tears (where romance drama take main place), and Da Capo (where the male protagonist has as much intelligence as a stegosaurus). Romance drama has no place in this series. You know what I mean if you know the meaning of this series’ title “CLANNAD”.

So don’t get your hopes up on him ending up with your oh-so-awesome characters.

is this the best storyline kyoani could come up with in all this time? granted, there’s lots to love in this anime. but little things like fuko’s irritating, useless cameos and ryou’s total lack of a personality.. i have no idea what they’re doing taking away valuable screen time. i am hoping, with 6 episodes left, the script will not leave me going wtf is this crap another time.

i’m just hoping this episode is a blip in the 24, next few will hopefully explain the story better, as well as sooth my unsatisfied kyou tastebuds.

in my opinion that was a lazy way to do away with kyou and te rest. with a little imagination this episode wouldn’t have filled me with disappointment. lazy uninspired didn’t show much thinking, it was just an episode that left me thinking can’t you put in more effort into thinking. No it’s more like what’s with people needlessly hateing on Nagisa who hasn’t done anything to deserve that hate. It’s like watching a group of people dissing and booing the winner of a game just because THEIR favorite team specificly didn’t win. If your favorite team loses to what you percieve as a “middle school team” then what the heck is wrong with your favorite team? Well in reality you only choose to see that team as weaker/not deserving of victory just because you don’t like them. I don’t know why people are saying she has to die, it’s not justified…

Besides how is she not “main heroine” material? I like Kyou better but Nagisa is deserving too. She’s intresting, cute, realistic to an extent, and matches up well with Tomoya.

    @Moosh and Foosh
Er.. well how do you suggest it to be done then? Kyoani’s really big about sticking to source material, and with so many important events critical to Nagisa’s route and the After story left there’s not much they could have done. Also Kyou’s route and Tomoyo’s route conflicts too heavily with where they are going for them to be put in like Kotomi’s/Fuuko’s where they can just do the route and ommit the part where the main character hooks up with the girl in the end. (Both Tomoyo’s and Kyou’s routes have the romance aspect as key parts of the story) If just a little bit of imagiantion will do to “Fix” this episode then please share with us your thoughts on the best way to fit Nagisa’s route, the After Story, Kyou’s route, and Tomoyo’s in properly. Fuuko should stay in a comma though, she’s killing her own ending.

Hm seems like there are alot of mixed feelings about this ep. We have people singing praises about how this is the best episode and some going WTF that’s not how it should be!!! Oh well people are entitled to their opinion.

Let’s be clear on this, I do not hate any particular character, without a very compelling reason. Even when I do, I do not just blindly and crudely wish for the said characters death, with the exception of a few.

What I am sad is how the comments on my blog seem to be degenerating one fit for a /a/ thread, rather than a civilized discussion. I can take the censorship route, or in a more drastic case, adopt a no-comments stance like Ani-Nouto, but I believe in the freedom of opinion.

That being said, just like you people hate Nagisa, I and some people (Kinny Riddle at the least) hate people like you who just boorishly insult characters for no justifiable reason.

  38. Kinny Riddle Said,

I’d like to add, sympathizing with Kyou and Ryou’s pain is one thing, but going so far as to insult Nagisa for all their woes is just pushing it.

Let me ask you folks one thing, would you imagine Kyou and Ryou themselves to want to go and grab a cleaver and slice Nagisa’s throat? It’s just not in their personalities to do so. This is Clannad, not School Days, as far as I remember.

And it’s not like it’s Nagisa’s fault that Tomoya fell into her gravitational pull, he merely drifted towards her. And to be fair, Kyou herself is partly to blame for not taking the initiative for all these two years with Tomoya before he met Nagisa, which is why she’s so anguished at her “failure” more than her sister.

If you ask whether I’m serious about it? Maybe, when it comes to mindless insults like these, then yes, I’m very serious about how all this mindlessness goes.

Personal taste is hardly a justifiable reason nor a justification since you can’t expect everyone to have the same likes and dislikes, and since you already know how Kurogane doesn’t like senseless hating, you’re just asking for a “Nice Boat”-load of trouble. Good luck, have fun.

I’m sorry but if you declare any argument that doesn’t resemble your opinion as “senseless”, then this is a rather pointless discussion. What are justified arguments in your opinion?

Nagisa’s character is in my opinion terribly boring, that after spending god knows how many episodes as THE main female character. I don’t like how she looks at all, how is that unjustified? Is there an objective way of measuring whether a character looks good or not?

Anime characters are obviously subject to people’s taste, so why is it so unjustified that some declare one character awful and another one great?

  42. Cipher Said,

*I’m sorry but if you declare any argument that doesn’t resemble your opinion as “senseless”, then this is a rather pointless discussion.*

I did not, at any point in time during this discussion, declare that any other opinion than mine is ‘senseless’. I just merely implied that yours is because well, you have not justified whatever you said.

*What are justified arguments in your opinion?*

Arguments which can appeal and be rationalised to both parties based on objective grounds as well as common reason and logic. Hence why I do not take personal taste into account, not until they are backed up with a discussion premise.

*Nagisa’s character is in my opinion terribly boring, that after spending god knows how many episodes as THE main female character.*

See, what YOU find boring, others might not find it as such. Personal opinion. I do not see any effort trying to explain WHY she’s boring, or even how. Your refusal to clarify your points merely proves that indeed, there is so far no justification for your bashing.

*I don’t like how she looks at all, how is that unjustified?*

How is it justified? I see no explanation as to WHY you dislike her looks. You just do. Care to explain? Evidently not. Is it because her eyes are drawn too large? Is it because she has the twin strands of hair flouncing out? Gee man, explain. And besides, if you don’t like her looks, there are many others who do. From there out it’s a matter of personal taste, and again, if you are not willing to discuss or reason out your dislike, then there is no use.

*Is there an objective way of measuring whether a character looks good or not?*

No. But there certainly are personal guidelines, and it definitely helps your cause a lot if you would just explain, by those lines, WHY and HOW a character looks good or not. You have not done that so far, so how can you expect anyone to understand your justifications when there isn’t even any presented?

*Anime characters are obviously subject to people’s taste, so why is it so unjustified that some declare one character awful and another one great?*

Cause they don’t bother explaining their personal taste. In your case, for example, you just waltz in, decry an anime character as hideous, flat and lousy, to the irk of people who like that character, and not bother to explain why. And if you cannot explain your own personal tastes, or at least present it in a discussive manner, then yes, you’re better off not posting ‘senseless hate’.

I am not trying to stop anyone from hating anyone they want to hate or from voicing their opinions, but I wish for those who are doing so, to voice it out in a productive and respectable way, rather than crudely doing so.

My main annoyance with this people are how disrespectful they are of other people’s opinions and think they are the ones who are right. Also, how unprepared they are to face the backlash when it inevitably comes as well.

If you want to say negative things about a character, feel free, just be reminded that there are other people who feel exactly the same way that you are on the receiving end, and they will retaliate. Here’s a cliché but true saying to ponder on, “If you kill, you must be prepared to be killed as well.”

You are free to make criticisms, but you must be prepared to have your opinion being mercilessly scrutinized if you don’t make yourself even slightly clear, and if you can’t accept that, tough luck. Stop trying to portray yourself as victims being persecuted.
