Mnemosyne begins

The last major show of this season finally airs. It’s really supposed to be an OVA, and the reasons why are pretty clear, but AT-X will be airing it first, as it’s their 10th Anniversary Production.

The first episode introduces us to Rin (Noto-sama!) and Mimi (Rie Kugimiya), who run a detective agency in Tokyo. The case in the episode centers on Maeno(Nobuyuki Hiyama), saved by Rin from the yakuza, who doesn’t seem to know who he really is, even though he has memories. Rin investigates and finds out about an illegal research institution run by Sayara Yamanobe (Rie Tanaka) where she is researching for a way to become immortal and Maeno is a clone, a byproduct of the research.

Needless to say, Rin gets killed, sadistically by top-in-her-form Rie Tanaka, revives back, kicks her ass and the research institution is destroyed by rampaging zombies, byproducts of the research. Rin hands Maeno a gun, asking him to decide his future for himself, but he doesn’t commit suicide, instead returns back to Rin’s agency.

Even after watching the first episode, I can’t say I totally understand the series yet. The story is rather atypical sci-fi + supernatural, nothing truly groundbreaking yet. But the action is definitely gruesome and pretty violent, especially when Rin is tortured badly by Sayara, literally getting turned in to a pincushion. The nudity is also pretty much uncensored, and truly, some of the scenes really push the envelope of what’s allowed on TV.

In terms of the voice acting, the most anticipated aspect of this show, Noto-sama plays Rin in a very casual fashion, fitting for her character and she uses a lower and deeper voice for it. Rie Tanaka is in her best element as the sadist Sayara, and the torture scene of Rin was well…. pure evil. Rie Kugimiya uses her usual voice here while Nobuyuki Hiyama was rather unrecognizable at first for me.

Hmm, so far, I find the show quite so-so for me, but it has potential. Hopefully, the next episode, airing in a month’s time, will be more interesting. Wonder if Rie Tanaka will only appear for the first episode only or will she get another role, as seeing Sayara gets killed at the end of this episode.

    The more Noto-sama the better

Rin strikes me as a cross between Yomiko Readman and Motoko Kusanagi. She obviously has skill and can be pretty ruthless, but has compassion and a bit of clumsiness. I guess the fact that she can’t die has a bit to do with her ‘Crap, my fat butt set off the alarm and now I’m going to get killed. Oh well.’ attitude.

Curious as to what those insubstantial floating things were supposed to represent.

Oh god, I like that line of yours. It was the best part of the episode actually, more so than the yuri torture.

Hmm, after reading that Noto’s character gets tortured naked, I’m really trying to resist my sadistic urge to go watch this right away, lol.
