Shakugan no Shana II 16

Shakugan no Shana II

I just love this eyecatches for providing an easy source of post pictures.

A much more reflective episode this week, as the cast deal with the aftermath of the chaos last week.

The school is cleaning up from the festival, when Yoshida reminisces on Pheles passing her a Hougu for her.. that only she to use. The Hougu functions to summon Pheles, but the person who uses it, will have their existence used up, therefore dying. Still, Pheles asks her to use it for her sake, for Johann’s sake and also for her own desire to stand on the same place as Shana and Yuuji are at.

Later, the gang assembles at Satou’s house, where Margery conducts more investigation on Yuuji, finding out nothing more more than the Seal added to the Reiji Maigo, along with a tracking spell as well. Margery also explains how Johann was able to appear out as well, even after the seal was put on.

The next day, Yuuji, Shana and Yoshida bid farewell to Yuuji’s father, leaving for his work again. Shana and Yuuji head for Wilhelmina’s place, to sort out the information provided by Outlaw to Wilhelmina. Yuuji also decides that he needs to get stronger as well, and requests Shana for the Blutsauger.

After separating, Yoshida walks around town, in a daze, bumping in to Ooga-chan. She truly realizes that Konoe’s existence is completely erased and half-decides to throw the Hougu away, when she is caught in Shana’s fuzetsu. She witnesses Yuuji training with Blutsauger and decides to keep the Hougu for now.

New OP and ED, 「BLAZE」 and 「Sociometry」 respectively, both by KOTOKO. 「BLAZE」 is a rather techno-ish song, which I feel is rather unsuitable for the Shana series. It really doesn’t incite that “epic” feel as did 「JOINT」 did. I kinda wished that they switched positions instead :P. One thing I do like is the new OP animation, which is approaching Sunrise-OP spoiler levels. You can see the OP video below, thanks to Aroduc from Tenka Seiha. 「Sociometry」 is more satisfying a song instead, and the tune of the song fits well as an ending theme. It’s still very much in a techno beat though. The ED animation features the whole cast in stills, just like 「triangle」’s one.

The episode itself offers a much needed breather from the events of the past three episodes, with everyone dealing with the recent developments in their own way. This was primarily a Yoshida episode though, and her character is given a more deeper meaning, as she struggles with her love for Sakai over the ability she is given, either to make the choice to possible save Yuuji when he is in danger at the price of her own existence or otherwise. I feel that Yoshida finally has a true role to play inside the series now, instead of just being the “other point” of the love triangle.

Yuuji has also finally decided to make himself more useful, and the OP animating hints of that as well, with him using the Blutsauger, quite masterfully as well. He’s been truly useless in the past 3 episodes.

Also, am I the only one who finds Wilhelmina using an old-school typewriter, quite quaint :P.

Ugh! Why can’t they just let Kawada Mami do all the songs. I used to like Kotoko’s songs but now the past year or two they just suck or are something I would only listen to once a blue moon. The voice Kotoko used for the first 38 seconds of the opening made my ears bleed. After she stopped trying to be some kind of techno squeaky girly voice (0:38) and started using a normal voice the song got better but still not good.

Is Kazumi even another point in the love triangle? Yuuji barely even thinks about her!

That block of wood probably wouldn’t even recognise a love confession even if he was punched in to him, much less Kazumi’s “hidden” crush on him.

Haha, Yuuji seems so out of place at the end of the OP, when he’s carrying that giant sword. Gotta show that he’s a man around all those women :P

Finally, Yuji gets to fight. Can’t wait till the subs come out to see this.
Well, I don’t see Pheles at all in the OP. What’s this? She’s not that important anymore?

Looks like Yoshida will be kidnapped later on too. Believe it.

The OP is meh, I liked JOINT a lot more.

    Definitely agree on the music.

The animation was awesome for both OPs, but Joint is clearly superior and better fitting.

@Totali: I love the typewrite actually.

@Clear: Yes, Pheles is gone now. Her stay was truly short ;_;. Yoshida getting kidnapped is pretty much a given already.
