CLANNAD 01 Widescreen Comparison
Yay! CLANNAD 01 Widescreen was aired by bs-i! Too bad it wasn’t in true HD quality :(, but hey, it’s 16:9!
Out of boredom, I spent an hour doing comparison shots between the normal pan-scan version and the widescreen one. Be warned, the following post is not 56k friendly :P. Click on each picture for the real deal version. All the widescreen shots were downscaled to 853×480 to facilitate easier comparison.

It isn’t much, really. But somehow, it feels as if Ive gone missing of something now when I know there is widescreen

Not sure if it is the capture quality or what, but the WS version seems washed out a bit :(

I would have preferred in widescreen for the subtle different viewing experience but the quality of it is just not that good, plus, it is behind and really, I can’t wait for the next episode…

I can’t detect the difference in quality from the posted pictures since they’re all scaled down. I will have to watch the actual video for comparison.
Anyway, does anyone have a good explanation why KyoAni decided to air Clannad in 4:3 instead of 16:9?

This was not meant to be a comparison in quality anyways. Just a comparison of the difference between the amount of detail left out from cropping the 16:9 source to 4:3 for the TV airing.
Again, as I stated at first, 16:9 CLANNAD wasn’t aired in real HD quality. Most of the “HD” raws are practically upscales. Even the HD rls of SS-E’s 16:9 CLANNAD was acknowledged by the encoder to be an upscale. Trusty me, the supposedly 1280 raw I have is way worse.
As for why KyoAni decided to air CLANNAD in 4:3… this still remains something of a mystery. So far, all of their works from AIR(1st KyoAni series I followed in real time) have been aired in 16:9. Why did they suddenly make this “air 4:3 first and 16:9 later”… I really have no idea.

I’m glad for the WS version. I can die in peace now.

Baaah… WS looks a lot better, can’t explain it, just better =] gotta look for HD 16:9 now…. guess I should reconsider buying WS monitor as well *sigh*

The WS screens just look… wider (doh). I mean, it just looks more spacious around everyone. That’s a good thing, instead of seeing everyone getting crammed into small frames.
Also, Tomoyo~! \o/

Well, there can only be one reason why they decide to air the first run in 4:3, and then the 16:9 in non-HD quality: To sell more DVDs.

Ne, ne, Kurogane-san, any thoughts on what might happen if:
Sanae Bread + Akiko Jam?

I prefer not to imagine that.

You guys seem to be assuming the animation team have absolute control over what’s shown. It’s a wild guess, but perhaps some group having nothing to do with KyoAni wanted them to make 4:3 first and foremost.
Quite a lot of spoiled animu brats out these days. *sigh* -_-);

oh well i don’t really mind, its just that all my kyo ani collection has been in widescreen, so i thought it would be better if this one was. But seriously, if it means watching and not watching i would watch any size or version of this ^^

This isn’t KyoAni’s fault.
It has everything to do with the stations airing the content and the formats they choose to run. They deserve the blame–and they deserve a LOT of it for doing such crappy work.
