Nia's demise made it even more poignant, but both of them realized the outcome before the galaxy-smashing battle was over. Then there's the fact that Simon, like Gimmy mentioned, could very well bring everyone who had died back just with his spiral power. Yet he chose not to. I recall someone saying that a true hero cannot know true happiness; instead, they work to make other people happy. Fitting, in this case. The ending was very appropriate for the theme of the series, despite what the whiners and naysayers say.
