School Days 12: “This tears of mine… they are tears of happiness!!”

School Days

A pretty long summary of the episode, for those who want to know the full story. Sorry, no screencaps, since I only watched it from NicoVideo, but there’s already enough circulating around anyways :).

P.S. Now, with 20x more screencaps, for more awsum effects.

Resuming from the last episode, Kotonoha regains her consciousness and sanity. Meanwhile, Sekai has cooked up a big meal at Makoto’s home, and calls him to ask when he will be back. It turns out that Makoto is eating dinner with Kotonoha at a very fancy restaurant, so he won’t be coming back and tells her to leave, after a nasty exchange of words regarding their child. (Oh god,he’s such a little bastard)

Angered, Sekai leaves Makoto’s place but returns after she spots Makoto and Kotonoha on a train. Makoto, meanwhile, brought back Kotonoha and has a soliloquy with himself, regarding his feelings. He boils water to make tea but the doorbell rings. He answers the door to see Sekai slapping Kotonoha. Sekai tells Kotonoha to leave Makoto alone, but Kotonoha takes her stand back as Makoto’s girlfriend and accuses Sekai of seducing Makoto away and even reveals Setsuna’s true feelings for Makoto. Kotonoha and Makoto then kiss passionately in front of a shocked Sekai. (OMG, Kotonoha!!!)

Eyecatch cuts in and afterwards a flash back showing Sekai telling Setsuna of Makoto’s information appears. Sekai is haunted by her own demons, with her imagining Setsuna accusing her of stealing her crush.

A devastated Sekai wakes up the next morning, to a message from Makoto, telling her to go abort the baby (You bloody bastard). Makoto arrives at school and is relieved to see Sekai absent and shortly after receives a message from her saying she’s going to the hospital. Makoto and Kotonoha then have lunch at the roof like they did before and exchange niceties.

After school, Sekai meets Makoto at home and he asks her how was the visit to the hospital. Sekai remains silent, prompting Makoto to go make some tea for her, but Sekai takes up the job. Makoto’s handphone receives a message and he checks it in his bedroom. He’s surprised to see it’s from Sekai, containing only a lot of white spaces, with a single phrase, “さよなろ” at the end. Suddenly he turns around, only to get stabbed by Sekai, repeatedly, to his death (OH FUCKING YES. FUCKING YES!!!). Sekai comes to her senses and immediately runs away from the house. Makoto’s body is discovered by Kotonoha later, arriving to cook for him.

Kotonoha then messages Sekai, telling her to come to the rooftop at school. Sekai arrives only to find a blue bag on the bench they usually sit and she’s surprised by Kotonoha appearing behind her suddenly. Kotonoha asks her if she had went to the hospital, which Sekai says she did not. Kotonoha accuses Sekai of making up the story of her pregnant in order to make Makoto hers. Kotonoha asserts her position as Makoto’s girlfriend and Sekai also says she’s Makoto’s GF as well. Kotonoha points to the blue bag, saying Makoto’s inside it. Sekai opens to bag and pukes upon seeing the contents

Kotonoha then takes out a saw, not unlike the one in the game, and attacks Sekai, to make sure of her words that she’s pregnant. Sekai tries to defend herself with the kitchen knife she used to stab Makoto, but Kotonoha’s faster and she knocks away the knife and slices Sekai’s neck, a-la the game. A bloodied Kotonoha then stands by Sekai’s corpse, in an angle that suggest it’s from Sekai’s corpse, saying, “Just as I thought, it’s a lie. There’s no one inside.” (Oh god, this part is legendary).

The show cuts to a yacht sailing in the middle of an ocean, towards a sunset, (LOL NICE BOAT) with Kotonoha lying down on the deck, hugging Makoto’s dismembered head. Her last words are, “We’re finally together alone now, Makoto-kun.” End of show. I must say, the ending song for this episode is so totally at odds with the mood. After the ending song, a one minute monologue of Makoto’s words at the beginning cuts in….

Oh wow, that was awesome. With this ending episode, School Days has most definitely sealed its place in anime history. I’ll agree with zepy here, it was pretty appropriate for the TV stations to cancel this episode last week, as it’s truly, way, way more violent and bloodier than I thought it would be. But man, in the end, Makoto did receive his divine retribution, and Sekai as well, although I can’t really say she did deserve it that much.

Man, School Days has been one heck of a bumpy and uncomfortable ride, but at the least, it has soared to awesome heights with the bloody ending. Way to go, animation studio!

Here’s a collection of screencaps to summarise it even better.

What better way to end things then have Kotonoha sailing away with her love one (‘s head) into the sunset. It just had to be a boat! After seeing 2 Bad Ends put together, I thought Kotonoha would jump off the school building to give us the last bad end, but I thought the boat ending was better…. and helluva lot more creepy.

I have to wonder about the 3 pending OVAs though. If it’s what people think and these are ‘alternate ending’ OVAs, then it’s really going to come out as a cop out of sorts for the studio, since they spent so much of the series run making sure Makoto comes out as scum.

did makoto figure out that sekai was lying about being pregnant? it seemed so when he grabbed her stomach and said something (either “so ka” ( I see), or sekai). If it is true, that means he at least died knowing the truth, and it also means he was one smart pimp

  25. Kinny Riddle Said,

I’m lost for words. It should be just Makoto dying a gruesome death, with Sekai dying the token death, but they overdid it with Kotonoha sawing her abdomen. Sigh, violence for the sake of violence, no wonder the TV stations pulled the episode out after that murder incident. I would have done the same. At least the deaths in Higurashi have some meaning to them.

To quote from one of the Monty Python sketches:

Finally, after almost seventeen hours since I came across with the first screenshot that confirmed Makoto’s dead and a bad end; I was able to saw the episode. Holy God, I don’t know why, but after so long I have desired his dead, when that fact was registered by my mind, I felt pity for him, most likely because that drove Kotonoha to her edge and then… well, she finished off Sekai. Now I agree it was a smart move to remove the episode last week, regardless of whatever the media in Japan could have said about anime becoming a bad influence for the young people. Come on, this world is rotten everywhere, anything could be a bad example to encourage someone to do bad things. This decision was more for dignity than anything else.

Analyzing the episode block by block; I found out very odd how they showed us at the end how everything went without them like nothing. Sure, you can mound dead people for that long, but come on, three people gone missing; two dead for sure and one more surely died (Kotonoha) in the deeps of the ocean. For me that’s signal of how everyone who were involved with those three their relationship were; almost like nothingness. At least five girls slept with Makoto, his friend raped Kotonoha and was behind her; and finally if you knew their background, you could guess something had happened between them. I guess with this the producers showed us how trivial Makoto, Sekai and Kotonoha’s existence were for the people around them. At least Otome was in love with Makoto, but the other girls only went after carnal desires. Then Takeshi only lusted after Kotonoha, nothing more and nothing else. In the end, each and every character in the series only looked after themselves, only Setsuna tried to fight for her friend, suppressing her own emotions in the process. I’m starting to feel how this can be reflected on today’s society. Remember Columbus, Virginia, they were people who lost their path in this life, much like Sekai and Kotonoha in this last episode. The human being can be a fearsome existence to itself.

In the end, the one affected the most was Kotonoha. She really loved Makoto since the beginning; I know Sekai loved him the same way, but she did a bit mistake for letting her inability to express her feelings overcome Makoto’s pleading when he asked her for help with Kotonoha. Do you know, this reminds me of Shuffle, on how ASA used KAEDE to approach RIN; eventually RIN fall in love with her, but that was a cheap trick. The same could be said about KIMI GA NOZOMU EIEN, when everything ended in tragedy when those feelings weren’t said; and Sakura had to pay the price for that. Sekai was guilty, but then Kotonoha was navy for not making a move right away after catching Makoto cheating on her with Sekai. I don’t blame her, she was still too innocent; she putted her entire trust on him, and then when he started to think with his pants, Kotonoha lost her innocence forever, in many ways. The only one who didn’t deserve a sad end was her, and only her.

Seriously, when we get involved so deep within something, is hard to draw the line between reality and fantasy. I guess that’s one of the main reasons why an anime can be banned in such cases like was School Days finale. I had to stop watching the RAWs for episodes nine, ten and eleven, because after episode eight; I spend the entire week thinking about it, even when I was doing something I like it very much; my mind was somewhere else, thinking, guessing, hopping, longing. Is not a bad thing, but states clear certain pattern that you have to observe with concern. As I said before, not only anime can drive you to this situation, everything can be a cataclysm for good or bad things.

With this I close one of the weirdest and pleasant experiences on my entire life.

    Sarabata School Days…
    Sarabata Kotonoha, the innocent lamb
    Sarabata Sekai, the careless shipper
    Sarabata Makoto, the brainless wolf

Hey Sekai started this whole mess by ‘supporting’ Makoto and Kotonoha. If she has something on her mind… speak it, faking ur actions can be FATAL!!

She started this whole mess by seducing Makoto, having said that Makoto thinks with his dick. I can understand why the director(s) would make the two die, Kotonoha goes nuts becuz she never had to experience losing love before. Lose and lose big may prove to be too much to endure for ones like Kotonoha.

I had to remind my gf that IT IS AN ANIMATION (god damn it… it wasn’t pretty and it was hard)

School Days has deffinitely left a mark on my soul. I’ve just watched it a second time and its truly impacted me. I’m glad Makoto got what he deserved, as for Sekai, I think that she should have been allowed to live in the end, dispite the fact that she was the root of all of Kotonoha’s problems and misery. I regret hat Kotonoha could never be with her true love, but in the end i found joy in the fact that she was content to be with (what was left of) Makoto Itou.

School Days will forever be remembered by those who have seen it. It is an anime worthy of everyone’s time and it holds a candle to any other serious anime I’ve ever seen.

Shes nothing but a cold-hearted murderer, and if sekai wouldnt have killed makoto, Katsura would have, rememeber the kitchen scene? her lill sister is trying to talk to her and all u see is katsura chopping stuff up and then it pans over to the knives, nice imagry… well thers my rant…

First off, the ending was one to behold. It totally changed the way I thought about the series. It was surprisingly a very good ending, although I felt the wrong girl died in the end.

As an rant of what I thought about the protagonists, here we go:

If anyone was at fault in this series it was Makoto’s and his alone. Absolute bastard. Deserved the bloody end he got and deserved to be carved to pieces by Kotonoha. I could probably write a book on how much I hated the character (the ignorant piece of shite). This guy was only in it for himself from start to finish, whether it was Kotonoha, Sekai, or any of the other girls, he was only interested in their bodies and not their feelings.

Sekai wasn’t at all to blame, she gave him what he wanted all the way through (including Kotonoha), but when she finally gets him, he goes and betrays her time and time again. If there was something I didn’t like about her was that she was so open to her love with Makoto despite knowing her so called best friend Setsuna being in love with him first. She certainly didn’t deserve to die though.

Kotonoha was mental to the core and I didn’t understand why she was so infatuated with Makoto in the first place – initially she said it only to be an interest, but then she was willing to kill for him in the end? Hmmm… Sekai trying to seduce him? No. Makoto-the-Nob was the one who was fed up with Kotonoha and was trying his perverse luck with Sekai, not the other way around. I didn’t like her clingy attitude, especially when she clearly didn’t like the way Makoto was treating her at the beginning of it all.

The only other character I’d like to mention is Otome; this is because she was the only SANE character in the series. She was in love with Makoto, has a go, realises he’s not what she fell in love with him for and GIVES UP. Well done Otome.

Well, the writers really outdid themselves with this one, whether it was based on a game or not… Always good to have a love triangle, some psychos and some gushing blood, eh?
