Well, the way it was being built up made me thought for a second that it was going to get a happy ending, but once the train flashed past and the other side was empty.... you just get well...

And to be honest, I didn't really liked Beyond the Clouds that much. I still need to watch Hoshi no Koe as well.

I saw it at AX as well and thought it was amazing, just like all Makoto's stuff.

Although really, can you seriously say you didnt expect the ending? Have you watched his other movies? They all end the same way (minus small factors like why or how) basically, which isnt a bad thing, but its definately not 'unexpected' to see this ending if you ask me.

I saw the ADV Films subtitled screening at a local theater during AnimeExpo.

It's incredible. I recall reading a synopsis of the 2nd and 3rd segments and thought negatively about the ending. Actually seeing it, especially the editing, camera angles, and subtle facial expressions really made this movie work for me; you definitely have to experience it for yourself vs. reading about it.

Makes me glad that there's anime like this out there to point up what can really be done with the medium.

The guys from ADV says that they are hoping to get this on movie screens since it really deserves to be seen on the big screen. I totally agree.

Now if only I could order the single; got rejected given my USA address.

The thing is, I was moved to tears by the first part, but it set such a high standard for the whole movie that I couldn't help but feel the rest was a bit of a let-down. Or something.

Wow.

Never mind the fact that I lost track a few times (due to my near-useless knowledge of Japanese), but I still thought it was utterly breathtaking.

And by the way, Shinkai is participating in the Ani-Kuri shorts on NHK as well *I think*, so he *is* springing out something in less than six months. :D

mt-i: I never thought "underwhelmed" could be used to describe this movie. Personally, one must look very much past the plot, characters and the procession of the movie to truly enjoy Byousoku.

Byousoku is 100% about the theme, "distance", and it truly and powerfully made me felt it, in a way transcending the movie itself. Yes, the movie might not be very "happening" or "exciting", but it is a one hour exploration of a fundamental thing that is always present in out lives.

It still stands for me as the best work I have (and probably will be the only) watched this year unless Makoto springs out something in less than 6 months.

@Ravage: the remaining parts are most likely not going to be subbed, as ADV has already announced the licencing of this title in the US.

As for the movie itself, I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw it in Shibuya last April. The second part is nowhere near as powerful as the first, and the third one has a music video feel to it that somehow didn't work for me. I think I liked Kumo no mukou, yakusoku no basho better. Of course my copy on the limited edition DVD is on its way nonetheless.

I've just seen it, and for me there's no question it's Shinkai's best. The question is whether or not it is the best animated film of all time. For me, it is closer to religious worship than to anime. True Art, both visual and dramatic.
