[...] Then, Kyoto Animation decided to switch directors on the Lucky Star anime, apparently due to lackluster humor? To be fair, the second and third episodes were chuckle inducing, but only for a few parts. The show is still no Azumanga, or even a Gaijin 4-koma, for that matter. [...]

Wait, how exactly does a director being replaced show Kyoto Animation's trait of producing high quality animated shows. The two concepts have nothing in common.

I'd tend to agree with Hashihime; I interpret the news post as saying "he hasn't reached the level of a director yet". Centuries of understatement can't produce a press release like that.

That and the announcement link kept on resizing my window size.

I agree that this all seems a bit strange, suggesting the possibility of a prank or, as Matthew suggests, Takemoto Yasuhiro taking on the role of Director for a single episode.

However, it's worth considering that, if a change has indeed occurred, the decision could have been made a couple of weeks back, prior to Episode 5 being completed.

Either way, given how quickly news travels through the fan community in Japan, I figure we'll have some sort of answer soon enough.

This is very probably a fake inserted on the KyoAni site by vandals. Here is my reasoning:
1. No press release would say "because he has not reached the level of being a director yet," as I read this one to do.
2. The announcement was posted sometime between midnight and 3am Monday morning, when staff is normally not at work.
3. Episode five will already have been completed by now.
4. The announcement opens in a small new window, unlike other announcements in the news list.
5. The announcement page was made in Adobe GoLive, using the "x-sjis" character set. The rest of the site appears to be simply in "shift_jis" and gives no creating software.

In my opinion, Lucky Star is a unique and superior show, and one of the best comedy anime I have ever seen, at a higher level of humor than all but a few other anime.

It seems to me likely that some kimo-ota, emboldened by their success over Gurren Lagen, are now turning their sights on someone else with a higher aesthetic sense than theirs.

Time will tell.

..or this is just KyoAni having fun with all of us by bringing the FMP team back for ep 5 since Shouji Gatou (FMP writer) is doing script for it. I expect Yamakan (Yutaka Yamamoto's nickname) will be back in ep 6 ;)

To be honest, I find it hard to believe that they'd change director without a very good reason - it's not as if Lucky Star has been THAT badly received, as its mostly just us weirdo gaijin-types moaning about it. I'd think its just as likely that Yamamoto has taken ill or has been shifted to another production as it is that he's been removed due to under performance.
