Lucky Star Director Change

News just came in from loyal blog reader Skane, about the change of directors for Lucky Star.

Apparently, current director Yamamoto Hiroshi has been changed to Yasuhiro Takemoto, whose credits include directing FMP? Fummoffu and FMP: The Second Raid. The news post link on Kyoto Animation website is here.

Hmm, just as I thought Lucky Star was improving much, but looks like KyoAni’s higher-ups weren’t as pleased. Did the resignation of Gainax’s Takami Akai had an indirect role in this, I wonder. Changing directors this early in the series airing is pretty unprecedented as far as I know, but it does show KyoAni’s legendary trait of producing high quality shows. We’ll see how the new director will bring Lucky Star in what direction and given his credits, I’m having pretty high hopes.

UPDATE: High possibility the news is a fake inserted by net vandals. Read hashihime’s comment below. The notice page seems to be inaccessible as well.

UPDATE 2: Surprisingly the news post is still up now, at Japan time 10am. Either the news is true or the vandals locked KyoAni out of their server. Further confirmation still needed I think.

UPDATE 3: The announcement has been picked up by many other major news sites, including Moon Phase, ANN and ANS. Looks like the news is true after all. Lack of more details probably due to the fact that Golden Week starts in Japan today. We’ll see as time goes on.

Does it say from what episode he’ll be directing? Cause then I might wanna consider watching it again lol!

Its impossible to, at least, smell some Gurren-Lagann scent here. But then again, KyoAni does have pretty high standards.

Having the Fumoffu director is certainly a plus.

The first episode was definitely lackluster. While the show improved by the second episode, well, it did nothing to dispel the mediocrity of the first episode.

I’m not too surprised that they changed directors, though.

Now if you excuse me, I have a friend to welcome back.

Takemoto-san will be taking over from Ep05 onwards. I sympathise with Yamamoto-san though… since this is indirectly telling him that he can’t even direct a 4Koma-adaptation. If that is not a blow to the ego, I don’t know what is. I just hope they give a better explanation for why they are replacing him.

    Cheers.

Wow, what I surprise. I think that while Yamamoto showed he can do a clever directing, good dialogues and action/adventure scenes in Haruhi Suzumiya, comedy isn’t exactly his thing. Yeah, Haruhi Suzumiya was funny in a witty, amusing way, like Lucky Star, but never really was a “bwa-haha” series like Fumoffu. And maybe that’s what even the people at KyoAni where expecting.
On the other hand, I don’t really think this has much to do with the DRAMA going over at Gainax, because even though LS isn’t very popular here, it seemed to have a good, if not very entusiastic, response in Japan. And he wasn’t fired, either :P
I want to believe this is an honest and clever choice. It’s painfully obvious for everyone that Lucky Star isn’t as good as it could be, and maybe this means the creators can be critic with themselves and make the best choices to give the viewers good anime. That, or the higherups weren’t pleased and kicked his ass. I’m an idealistic fan so I want to believe the first thing happened XD

To be honest, I find it hard to believe that they’d change director without a very good reason – it’s not as if Lucky Star has been THAT badly received, as its mostly just us weirdo gaijin-types moaning about it. I’d think its just as likely that Yamamoto has taken ill or has been shifted to another production as it is that he’s been removed due to under performance.

..or this is just KyoAni having fun with all of us by bringing the FMP team back for ep 5 since Shouji Gatou (FMP writer) is doing script for it. I expect Yamakan (Yutaka Yamamoto’s nickname) will be back in ep 6 ;)

This is very probably a fake inserted on the KyoAni site by vandals. Here is my reasoning:
    1. No press release would say “because he has not reached the level of being a director yet,” as I read this one to do.
    2. The announcement was posted sometime between midnight and 3am Monday morning, when staff is normally not at work.
    3. Episode five will already have been completed by now.
    4. The announcement opens in a small new window, unlike other announcements in the news list.
    5. The announcement page was made in Adobe GoLive, using the “x-sjis” character set. The rest of the site appears to be simply in “shift_jis” and gives no creating software.

In my opinion, Lucky Star is a unique and superior show, and one of the best comedy anime I have ever seen, at a higher level of humor than all but a few other anime.

It seems to me likely that some kimo-ota, emboldened by their success over Gurren Lagen, are now turning their sights on someone else with a higher aesthetic sense than theirs.

    Time will tell.

I agree that this all seems a bit strange, suggesting the possibility of a prank or, as Matthew suggests, Takemoto Yasuhiro taking on the role of Director for a single episode.

However, it’s worth considering that, if a change has indeed occurred, the decision could have been made a couple of weeks back, prior to Episode 5 being completed.

Either way, given how quickly news travels through the fan community in Japan, I figure we’ll have some sort of answer soon enough.

I’d tend to agree with Hashihime; I interpret the news post as saying “he hasn’t reached the level of a director yet”. Centuries of understatement can’t produce a press release like that.

That and the announcement link kept on resizing my window size.

Wait, how exactly does a director being replaced show Kyoto Animation’s trait of producing high quality animated shows. The two concepts have nothing in common.

[…] Then, Kyoto Animation decided to switch directors on the Lucky Star anime, apparently due to lackluster humor? To be fair, the second and third episodes were chuckle inducing, but only for a few parts. The show is still no Azumanga, or even a Gaijin 4-koma, for that matter. […]
