“..and they say lightning never strikes the same place twice…”

Off from the internet this few days and possibly for another few thanks to lightning strike burning off my motherboard’s PCI slots(I think). Thankfully all my other components were spared, especially the hard disks. If not…. I’ll probably break down.

How did that happen? And what recommendations can you give to us regarding this? Thanks in advance.

Are you not using a surge protector?

Unfortunately not all surge suppressors stay that way forever, many, if not most, of them use what are called a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) to stop the surge.

This would be fine if they didn’t wear out over time, perhaps with one large surge. Whats worse is when they wear out it can turn your surge suppressor into a power strip, though im not sure about how many suppressors do this.

If your suppressor uses MOVs (and most do) its a good idea to replace them once in a while, and probably a VERY good idea to do so if you know you took a direct lightning hit.

It’s a myth! Actual fact is lightning tends to keep striking the same place

Well…at least PCFair begins this weekend. You should be able to get a decent bargain.

Out of curiosity, what was your previous motherboard model?

haha, my surge suppresor broke months ago, and my pc is connected with inversed polarity… and it’s that time of the year with lots of rain and electric storms… orz

DAMN! All the Nanoha references were taken. :( Anywho, good luck with the repairs… I’ve been meaning to get a some better protection because my sister’s HD got fried thanks to a power surge. It’s jumped higher on my to do list, even we’re finally getting out of the rainy season where I’m at.

You could still use Elio…He does use lightning and his popularity has gone up after that move he pulled in episode two =D

    >>How did that happen?

Lightning came in through the LAN cable and hit the NIC, burning it. I thought it also killed the AGP slot(and by extension, the card) but it didn’t happen.

    >>Are you not using a surge protector?

Yes I am using it. Just didn’t expect it to come from the LAN cable.

    >>taiHEN TAIhen desu.

    >>What did you do to piss Fate off =) ?

No I didn’t piss her off OTL.

    >>at least PCFair begins this weekend. You should be able to get a decent bargain.

No wai. I’d probably get better bargains over LYN forums.

    >>what was your previous motherboard model?

Intel 865GBP, IIRC. It’s still not “previous” yet, for now.

    >>..after that move he pulled in episode two

    The kid’s a pervert-in-the-making already.
