Wonderful.

I'm married with two kids, been watching anime for several years, and nothing I have ever seen ever lasted this long in my mind.

There is nothing like first love. Nothing.

It's so sad that we grow up and lose the wonderment of this feeling. We still love, but never with the same intensity and desperation. This movie captured that.

Makoto Shinkai is the most genius director and creator of such emotional and amazing works. Byousoku 5cm is my absolutely favorite movie ALL TIME.
I can not still keep thinking about the sad story even up to now. (Look at the date :P)
Anyway, this is something that I will never forget in my entire life. I've also learnt more about love, distance, time and memories in a painful way you cannot bear it.
Arigatou Shinkai-san!

I'd also like to agree with astrobunny, but in addition, after "shying away in embarrassment" the other anime films should crawl back and worship at the feet of this movie. Hee. Oukashou is one of the most beautiful animations I've seen, artwork and story. This is art. I think I can see why his name is being linked a lot to Hayao Miyazaki's (the animation god before whom I bow down and worship), but I also feel that Makoto's work is very different in a very good kind of way. By the way, does anyone know if there are subs out for the next two episodes and where they may be found? ^^

I agree with astrobunny, this is one anime that made me the same way that i felt when watching hayao miyazaki's films and it's a damn good feeling at that. After watching other more common anime for a while, when i watch these kind of films i can't believe my eyes. Oukashou is amazing because of the simple storyline that was made into a heartwarming(and heartbreaking) story of young love. Makoto Shinkai is just awesome.

I beg to differ. This one makes all the other anime shy away in embarrassment. As expected of Makoto, he can make the story seem so real, you'll feel like you were there. I haven't watched anime with stories of this quality in a long long time. I really look forward to the DVD's release. And, I wonder if the petals really fall at 5cm/s

i found it really boring, the whole time i was thinking "where is this going", expecting the girl to be dead at the station or hoping something interesting will happen.

but, nothing happened, they cuddled, awwww, and the next day he went back home. I think 30 second adverts have more storyline.

Animation was great, but this really was like watching a good painting dry...

 its crap

Dattebayo aired the first episode as a Troll / Fake sub. Check out the web site for the first episode. Also the people subbing it in english are from the website Bikasuishin - check it there. Well I really am dying to see the last part!

This is about as good as anime gets. No mecha, no princesses with magical amulets, no violence -- just an utterly compelling little story that everyone can relate to. Best backgrounds / "sets" I've ever seen in anime. I wish that the characters could've been rendered as realistically, but they were acceptably illustrated. The music was a little maudlin at times, but the story was emotionally flawless, making even this big guy a little sniffly at times. If you've seen any of Makoto Shinkai's other works ("Voices of a Distant Star", "The Place Promised in our Early Days", "She and Her Cat"), you know to expect quality. Well, this is as good as anything he's ever done, which means that it's better than 99% of everything else out there.
